Modern Hindi communication uses both inherited constructions and well-integrated English loans: किसी को फ़ोन करना, किसी से फ़ोन पर बात करना, किसी का फ़ोन आना, फ़ोन उठाना, संदेश भेजना, लिंक शेयर करना, and ऑनलाइन जुड़ना. The borrowed nouns do not bring English grammar with them. Hindi postpositions mark the participants, and Hindi verbs carry tense, aspect, agreement, politeness, and completion.
Everyday speakers vary in how much English-origin vocabulary they use. This page labels a mixed form (informal/professional Hinglish) when a less mixed neutral alternative is also current. Formal notices prefer संपर्क करना, संदेश भेजना, साझा करना, संलग्न करना; ordinary conversations strongly favor फ़ोन, कॉल, मैसेज, शेयर, अटैच in many communities. The social distribution of such choices is developed in English code-switching and Hinglish.
Calling someone and speaking with someone use different frames
The recipient of a call takes को: रीना को फ़ोन करना, with pronoun forms मुझे, तुम्हें, उन्हें. A conversation partner takes से in किसी से बात करना. The channel can be added as फ़ोन पर.
मैं आपको खाना खाने के बाद फ़ोन करूँगा।
maĩ āpko khānā khāne ke bād fon karū̃gā.
I'll call you after dinner. (male speaker, respectful)
क्या तुमने डॉक्टर से फ़ोन पर बात की?
kyā tumne ḍokṭar se fon par bāt kī?
Did you speak with the doctor on the phone? (informal)
The perfective बात की agrees with feminine बात, not with the person marked by ने. फ़ोन करना has masculine फ़ोन, so its neutral completed form is फ़ोन किया.
उन्होंने सुबह दो बार फ़ोन किया था, लेकिन मैं बैठक में था।
unhoṃne subah do bār fon kiyā thā, lekin maĩ baiṭhak meṃ thā.
They had called twice in the morning, but I was in a meeting. (honorific or plural caller, male speaker)
Conversational कॉल करना is extremely common (informal/professional Hinglish). Neutral फ़ोन करना works across more settings; formal संपर्क करना means “contact” and need not imply a voice call.
An incoming call belongs to the caller
Hindi commonly packages an incoming call as किसी का फ़ोन आना: literally, “someone's call came.” The possessive form agrees with masculine फ़ोन: रीना का, माँ का, मेरे दोस्त का.
अभी माँ का फ़ोन आया था; वह कल पहुँचेंगी।
abhī mā̃ kā fon āyā thā; vah kal pahũceṅgī.
Mum just called; she'll arrive tomorrow. (honorific agreement)
To answer, use फ़ोन उठाना. To end normally, फ़ोन रखना is conventional and relatively neutral: अब फ़ोन रखता हूँ. फ़ोन काटना describes deliberately disconnecting or cutting someone off and can sound abrupt when it names a social action, though it is also technically descriptive.
मैंने फ़ोन उठाया, लेकिन दूसरी तरफ़ से कोई बोला नहीं।
maĩne fon uṭhāyā, lekin dūsarī taraf se koī bolā nahīṃ.
I answered the phone, but nobody spoke at the other end.
ठीक है, अब फ़ोन रखती हूँ; घर पहुँचकर संदेश भेजूँगी।
ṭhīk hai, ab fon rakhtī hū̃; ghar pahũckar sandeś bhejū̃gī.
All right, I'll hang up now; I'll message when I get home. (female speaker)
The literal image “put the phone down” has become an idiomatic closing predicate. It remains natural even when there is no physical handset to put down.
Connecting, ringing, and breaking up
Intransitive फ़ोन लगना means that the call connects; transitive फ़ोन लगाना means to place or connect a call. घंटी बजना describes ringing. These collocations are not freely exchangeable with English connect.
कस्टमर केयर का नंबर लग ही नहीं रहा है।
kasṭamar keyar kā nambar lag hī nahīṃ rahā hai.
I just can't get through to customer care. (conversational)
दो मिनट लाइन पर रहिए, मैं आपका फ़ोन सही विभाग में लगा देती हूँ।
do minaṭ lāin par rahie, maĩ āpkā fon sahī vibhāg meṃ lagā detī hū̃.
Please stay on the line for two minutes; I'll connect your call to the right department. (female staff member, respectful)
For poor audio, speakers say आवाज़ कट रही है, आवाज़ साफ़ नहीं आ रही, or सुनाई नहीं दे रहा when no explicit feminine आवाज़ controls the predicate. नेटवर्क नहीं आ रहा means that there is no usable mobile signal; इंटरनेट नहीं चल रहा means the internet connection is not functioning.
आपकी आवाज़ बार-बार कट रही है; क्या आप खिड़की के पास जा सकते हैं?
āpkī āvāz bār-bār kaṭ rahī hai; kyā āp khiṛkī ke pās jā sakte haiṃ?
Your voice keeps breaking up; could you go near the window? (respectful)
यहाँ नेटवर्क नहीं आ रहा, इसलिए वीडियो बंद कर देता हूँ।
yahā̃ neṭvark nahīṃ ā rahā, islie vīḍiyo band kar detā hū̃.
There's no signal here, so I'll turn off the video. (male speaker)
Messages, replies, and files
The neutral frame is किसी को संदेश/मैसेज भेजना. संदेश is broadly neutral and favored in careful writing; मैसेज is common conversation (informal). A reply can be किसी को जवाब देना or किसी के संदेश का जवाब देना.
मुझे पता और लोकेशन मैसेज कर देना।
mujhe patā aur lokeśan maisej kar denā.
Message me the address and location. (familiar, informal)
मैंने आपके ईमेल का जवाब कल ही भेज दिया था।
maĩne āpke īmel kā javāb kal hī bhej diyā thā.
I sent a reply to your email yesterday itself. (respectful)
In मैसेज करना, the English-origin noun behaves as the lexical base and करना carries the verbal grammar. कर देना adds a bounded, often addressee-oriented result: get the message sent. With a specific file or link, भेजना is usually clearer than a bare करना predicate.
मीटिंग का लिंक पूरी टीम को भेज दीजिए।
mīṭiṅg kā liṅk pūrī ṭīm ko bhej dījie.
Please send the meeting link to the whole team. (respectful professional)
Mixed लिंक शेयर करना is natural in many workplaces (informal/professional Hinglish); neutral written Hindi can use लिंक साझा करना. Formal दस्तावेज़ संलग्न है means “the document is attached,” while daily office speech often has फ़ाइल अटैच की है.
Joining and acting online
Hindi integrates digital bases with करना: लॉग इन करना, डाउनलोड करना, अपलोड करना, म्यूट करना. The English base stays fixed while करना bears inflection. With an unmarked object, a perfective can agree with that object: feminine फ़ाइल डाउनलोड की, masculine फ़ॉर्म डाउनलोड किया.
मैंने फ़ाइल डाउनलोड कर ली है; अब आप लिंक हटा सकते हैं।
maĩne fāil ḍāunloḍ kar lī hai; ab āp liṅk haṭā sakte haiṃ.
I've downloaded the file; you can remove the link now. (respectful)
To join a meeting, मीटिंग में जुड़ना is neutral, while मीटिंग जॉइन करना is common professional Hinglish. The postposition remains Hindi in both: में, not an imported English preposition.
कृपया पाँच मिनट पहले ऑनलाइन बैठक में जुड़ जाइए।
kripyā pā̃c minaṭ pahle onlāin baiṭhak meṃ juṛ jāie.
Please join the online meeting five minutes early. (formal/respectful)
A short phone dialogue
हैलो, क्या अभी बात कर सकते हैं?
hailo, kyā abhī bāt kar sakte haiṃ?
Hello, can you talk now? (polite, number-neutral)
आवाज़ साफ़ नहीं आ रही; मैं आपको दो मिनट में वापस फ़ोन करता हूँ।
āvāz sāf nahīṃ ā rahī; maĩ āpko do minaṭ meṃ vāpas fon kartā hū̃.
I can't hear you clearly; I'll call you back in two minutes. (male speaker, respectful)
ठीक है, नहीं लगे तो मैसेज भेज दीजिएगा।
ṭhīk hai, nahīṃ lage to maisej bhej dījiegā.
All right; if it doesn't connect, please send a message. (respectful)
वापस फ़ोन करना is the normal transparent expression “call back.” Respectful दीजिएगा softens a future request; it is not simply a future prediction.
Common Mistakes
1. Using a direct noun with फ़ोन करना
❌ मैंने रीना फ़ोन किया।
Incorrect—an overt person called takes को.
✅ मैंने रीना को फ़ोन किया।
maĩne rīnā ko fon kiyā.
I called Reena.
2. Marking the conversation partner with को
❌ मैंने डॉक्टर को बात की।
Incorrect—बात करना takes the conversation partner with से.
✅ मैंने डॉक्टर से फ़ोन पर बात की।
maĩne ḍokṭar se fon par bāt kī.
I spoke with the doctor on the phone.
3. Making the caller an English-style subject of आना
❌ माँ ने फ़ोन आया।
Incorrect—an incoming call is the subject of आना; the caller is expressed as its possessor.
✅ माँ का फ़ोन आया।
mā̃ kā fon āyā.
Mum called.
4. Inflecting the English base instead of करना
❌ मैंने टिकट डाउनलोडेड किया।
Incorrect—the loan base remains डाउनलोड; Hindi कर लिया carries aspect and agreement.
✅ मैंने टिकट डाउनलोड कर लिया।
maĩne ṭikaṭ ḍāunloḍ kar liyā.
I downloaded the ticket.
5. Using काटना as a warm conversational closing
❌ अच्छा, अब आपका फ़ोन काटता हूँ।
Pragmatically awkward—काटना can suggest cutting the other person off.
✅ अच्छा, अब फ़ोन रखता हूँ; बाद में बात करेंगे।
acchā, ab fon rakhtā hū̃; bād meṃ bāt kareṅge.
All right, I'll hang up now; we'll talk later. (male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Call किसी को, speak किसी से, and receive किसी का फ़ोन.
- फ़ोन उठाना, रखना, लगना, and आवाज़ कटना are conventional predicates, not word-for-word English mappings.
- Hindi postpositions and light verbs remain in control even with मैसेज, लिंक, डाउनलोड, and other English-origin bases.
- Choose मैसेज/शेयर/जॉइन for communities where mixed speech is normal; prefer संदेश/साझा करना/जुड़ना in neutral formal writing.
