When Hindi speakers use an English base, they do not necessarily switch to English grammar. A word such as फ़ाइल, मीटिंग, or डाउनलोड can enter a Hindi phrase and receive Hindi gender, plural and oblique marking, postpositions, agreement, or a light verb. This grammatical integration ranges from fully conventional loans to spontaneous urban code-mixing, so formality and audience matter as much as morphology.
Loan nouns enter Hindi gender classes
English has no grammatical gender for ordinary inanimate nouns, but Hindi clauses require agreement. Conventional usage makes फ़ाइल, मीटिंग, बस, and ट्रेन feminine, while फ़ोन, कंप्यूटर, मैसेज, and ईमेल are commonly masculine. Variation exists for newer loans, yet speakers do not suspend Hindi agreement simply because the source word is English.
नई फ़ाइल अभी तक अपलोड नहीं हुई है।
naī fāil abhī tak aploḍ nahīṃ huī hai.
The new file has not been uploaded yet.
आज की मीटिंग बहुत लंबी चली।
āj kī mīṭiṅg bahut lambī calī.
Today's meeting ran very long.
मेरा फ़ोन फिर बंद हो गया।
merā fon phir band ho gayā.
My phone switched off again.
The agreeing adjective and verb expose the noun's Hindi gender: नई...हुई with feminine फ़ाइल, but मेरा...हो गया with masculine फ़ोन. For unstable or regional usage, the reliable method is to notice a natural agreement frame, not to infer gender from English sound or spelling.
Hindi plurals and oblique forms
Integrated feminine nouns commonly take Hindi plural endings: फ़ाइलें, मीटिंगें, बसें, ट्रेनें in the direct plural, and फ़ाइलों, मीटिंगों, बसों, ट्रेनों before postpositions. Many masculine consonant-final loans, like native masculine class-II nouns, remain unchanged in the direct plural but add -ों in the oblique plural: दो फ़ोन, कंप्यूटरों पर.
पुरानी फ़ाइलें अलग फ़ोल्डर में रख दीजिए।
purānī fāileṃ alag folḍar meṃ rakh dījie.
Please put the old files in a separate folder.
इन कंप्यूटरों पर नया सॉफ़्टवेयर नहीं चलेगा।
in kampyūṭaroṃ par nayā sofṭveyar nahīṃ calegā.
The new software will not run on these computers.
दोनों मीटिंगों के बीच सिर्फ़ पंद्रह मिनट हैं।
donoṃ mīṭiṅgoṃ ke bīc sirf pandrah minaṭ haiṃ.
There are only fifteen minutes between the two meetings.
English plural -s also appears in strongly code-mixed speech—especially when an entire English phrase is retained—but do not stack it with a Hindi plural: forms like फ़ाइल्सें and मीटिंग्सों combine two systems unnaturally. In Hindi-script expository prose, integrated फ़ाइलें/फ़ाइलों is generally the clearest choice. Brand names and fixed English expressions may resist inflection, which is lexical rather than a different Hindi rule.
English base plus करना: a highly productive predicate
The most open pattern combines an English base with करना: डाउनलोड करना, प्रिंट करना, फ़ॉरवर्ड करना, बुक करना, कैंसल करना, मैसेज करना. The English material remains stable, while करना carries tense, aspect, person, and nonfinite morphology.
| Hindi form | Function |
|---|---|
| प्रिंट करना | infinitive: to print |
| प्रिंट कर रहा है | progressive: is printing |
| प्रिंट किया | perfective/default agreement: printed |
| प्रिंट करने के बाद | oblique infinitive: after printing |
| प्रिंट कर दीजिए | conjunctive plus vector: please print it |
मैंने टिकट ऑनलाइन बुक कर लिया है।
maĩne ṭikaṭ onlāin buk kar liyā hai.
I've booked the ticket online.
यह लिंक मुझे भी फ़ॉरवर्ड कर देना।
yah liṅk mujhe bhī forvarḍ kar denā.
Forward this link to me too.
रिपोर्ट प्रिंट करने से पहले तारीख़ जाँच लीजिए।
riporṭ prinṭ karne se pahle tārīx jā̃c lījie.
Check the date before printing the report.
Hindi aspect belongs to the light verb: कर रहा, कर लिया, कर देना. Do not try to place Hindi tense endings directly on the English base. In casual speech, speakers may omit करना in some innovative borrowed verbs or use English inflection during a fuller code-switch, but the base + करना pattern is the dependable Hindi construction.
The choice of vector adds ordinary Hindi event structure. बुक कर लिया presents the booking as achieved and relevant; फ़ॉरवर्ड कर देना presents a bounded action done for the requested result. The loan base supplies lexical content, while Hindi supplies the grammar.
Participles and agreement remain Hindi
Once करना is present, its participles and auxiliaries behave normally. In transitive perfective clauses with ने, an unmarked object may control agreement. फ़ाइल is feminine in मैंने फ़ाइल सेव की, while default masculine singular appears when the object is को-marked or no eligible controller is available. Many speakers also favor invariant-looking सेव किया through lexicalization and code-mixing, so variation is real; a full कर construction often makes the Hindi structure clearer.
रीना ने फ़ाइल सेव कर ली और लैपटॉप बंद कर दिया।
rīnā ne fāil sev kar lī aur laipaṭop band kar diyā.
Reena saved the file and shut down the laptop.
Here feminine ली agrees with फ़ाइल, while masculine दिया agrees with लैपटॉप. This is not English morphology wearing Devanagari; it is a Hindi compound predicate whose lexical element happens to be borrowed.
Borrowed adjectives are usually invariant
Common English adjectives such as स्मार्ट, फ़िट, कूल, सीरियस, and प्रोफ़ेशनल generally remain unchanged with masculine, feminine, singular, and plural nouns. Their register ranges from widespread colloquial Hindi to conspicuous urban code-mixing (informal/professional).
हमें छोटा लेकिन प्रोफ़ेशनल डिज़ाइन चाहिए।
hameṃ choṭā lekin profeśanal ḍizāin cāhie.
We need a small but professional design.
वह बहुत स्मार्ट लड़की है, पर दिखावा बिल्कुल नहीं करती।
vah bahut smārṭ laṛkī hai, par dikhāvā bilkul nahīṃ kartī.
She is a very smart girl, but she does not show off at all.
Notice the contrast: native छोटा agrees, but borrowed प्रोफ़ेशनल does not; स्मार्ट remains unchanged before feminine लड़की. A freely invented स्मार्टी adjective is not Hindi agreement.
Productive Hindi material around an English base
English bases can occur before वाला: डिलीवरी वाला, ऑनलाइन भुगतान वाला विकल्प, मार्केटिंग करने वाली टीम. They can also anchor compounds such as फ़ोन नंबर, बैंक खाता, and ऑफ़िस का समय. The degree of spelling fusion depends on lexicalization: फ़िल्मी is an established adjective, but a new English base is usually left distinct rather than being forced into a Sanskritic-looking formation.
डिलीवरी वाले ने कहा कि पार्सल शाम तक पहुँच जाएगा।
ḍilīvarī vāle ne kahā ki pārsal śām tak pahũc jāegā.
The delivery person said the parcel would arrive by evening.
मार्केटिंग करने वाली टीम कल नया कैंपेन लॉन्च करेगी।
mārkeṭiṅg karne vālī ṭīm kal nayā kaimpen lonc karegī.
The marketing team will launch the new campaign tomorrow.
Established फ़िल्म → फ़िल्मी forms a useful small family: फ़िल्म, फ़िल्मी, फ़िल्मवाला (informal, context-dependent), फ़िल्म बनाना. But this does not make -ई freely attachable to every loan. ऑफ़िसी for “official/office-related” is not the general standard adjective; use दफ़्तरी, कार्यालयी (formal), or an analytic phrase according to meaning.
Choosing a lexical layer
English-derived प्रिंट करना, inherited छापना, and Sanskritic मुद्रित करना (formal) can describe overlapping acts. A coworker might say इसे प्रिंट कर दो; a printer or print shop normally uses छापना when discussing the production of copies; an official colophon may say मुद्रित. None is inherently “better Hindi”—the audience and genre select the natural expression.
ऑफ़िस में सब ‘प्रिंट कर दो’ कहते हैं, लेकिन आदेश में ‘दस्तावेज़ मुद्रित करें’ लिखा है।
ofis meṃ sab ‘prinṭ kar do’ kahte haiṃ, lekin ādeś meṃ ‘dastāvez mudrit kareṃ’ likhā hai.
At the office everyone says ‘print it,’ but the instruction says ‘print the document’ in Sanskritized wording.
Likewise, कैंसल करना is common in conversation, रद्द करना is neutral across many registers, and निरस्त करना is administrative (formal). A polished Hindi speaker moves between these layers rather than applying one English affix system to all contexts.
For a fuller account of these mixed predicates, see English loan plus करना predicates. Their social distribution is treated under English code-switching and Hinglish.

Key Takeaways
- English bases can receive Hindi gender, number, oblique case, agreement, postpositions, and light verbs.
- Base + करना is highly productive; करना carries Hindi tense, aspect, and nonfinite morphology.
- Integrated plurals use one system at a time: फ़ाइलें/फ़ाइलों, not stacked फ़ाइल्सें/फ़ाइल्सों.
- Derivational formations such as फ़िल्मी are lexical, while वाला and analytic constructions remain broadly productive.
- English, inherited, Perso-Arabic, and Sanskritic options coexist, with register—not “purity”—guiding the best choice.
