Agent nouns with -vālā

Hindi वाला is an exceptionally productive way to identify a person by what they sell, use, do, or are responsible for. चायवाला may mean a tea seller, while गाड़ी चलाने वाला means “the person who drives.” English often needs a compound, an -er noun, or a relative clause; Hindi uses one agreeing family: masculine singular वाला, feminine वाली, and plural, oblique, or respectful वाले.

Noun plus वाला: association becomes a person label

A noun can be followed by वाला to label someone conventionally associated with it. The semantic relation is supplied by shared knowledge, not by the suffix alone.

FormationUsual readingRegister
चायवालाtea sellereveryday
दूधवालाmilk delivery person/vendoreveryday
सब्ज़ीवालाvegetable sellereveryday
दफ़्तरवालाperson from/at the officeinformal, context-dependent

चायवाला रोज़ सुबह सात बजे दुकान खोलता है।

cāyvālā roz subah sāt baje dukān kholtā hai.

The tea seller opens the shop at seven every morning.

आज दूधवाली ने बताया कि कल वह देर से आएगी।

āj dūdhvālī ne batāyā ki kal vah der se āegī.

Today the milk delivery woman said that she would come late tomorrow.

These compounds range from transparent to lexicalized. चायवाला conventionally denotes someone who sells or serves tea, not anyone who happens to possess tea. नीली टोपी वाला, by contrast, is a temporary descriptive label: “the one wearing the blue cap.” Writing also varies. Short, conventional combinations are commonly closed up—चायवाला—whereas a long phrase remains separate—नीली टोपी वाला. Never insert a Latin-style hyphen merely because English treats -wala like a suffix.

नीली टोपी वाले से पूछिए; वही यहाँ काम करते हैं।

nīlī ṭopī vāle se pūchie; vahī yahā̃ kām karte haiṃ.

Ask the person in the blue cap; he is the one who works here.

Here respectful singular वाले, करते, and हैं all treat the person as honorifically plural. The oblique form before से would also be वाले, even without respect. Context distinguishes the two functions.

💡
Do not translate वाला with one English word. First ask what association the context makes salient: seller, owner, wearer, user, resident, employee, or simply “the one characterized by X.”

Verb plus वाला: the person who does an action

With a verb, Hindi normally uses the oblique infinitive in -ने before वाला: पढ़ने वाला “one who reads/studies,” मरम्मत करने वाली “woman who repairs,” खाना बनाने वाले “people who cook.” This is not the finite verb and not an English bare stem.

कंप्यूटर ठीक करने वाला दोपहर तक आएगा।

kampyūṭar ṭhīk karne vālā dopahar tak āegā.

The person who repairs computers will arrive by noon.

हमारी गाड़ी चलाने वाली बहुत सावधानी से चलाती हैं।

hamārī gāṛī calāne vālī bahut sāvdhānī se calātī haiṃ.

Our driver drives very carefully.

रात में काम करने वालों को कंपनी घर तक छोड़ती है।

rāt meṃ kām karne vāloṃ ko kampanī ghar tak choṛtī hai.

The company takes employees who work at night home.

The last example shows the plural oblique वालों before को. Once the whole phrase denotes people, it declines like a masculine -आ noun: direct plural वाले, oblique plural वालों. A feminine singular is वाली; feminine plural is वालियाँ, with oblique plural वालियों when an explicitly feminine group is intended.

Agent, characteristic, or imminent actor?

The same form can describe a regular role, a characteristic, or a participant in an upcoming event. खाना बनाने वाला may mean “cook/the person who makes food,” “someone who tends to cook,” or, with an explicit time, “the person who is going to make the food.” The surrounding clause resolves the interpretation.

आज खाना बनाने वाला कौन है?

āj khānā banāne vālā kaun hai?

Who is the person cooking today?

वह हर बात पर शिकायत करने वाला आदमी नहीं है।

vah har bāt par śikāyat karne vālā ādmī nahīṃ hai.

He isn't the kind of man who complains about everything.

The first assigns a temporary role; the second describes a disposition. When वाला forms a prospective predicate such as ट्रेन चलने वाली है “the train is about to leave,” it no longer denotes an agent noun. That construction receives fuller treatment under prospective वाला.

💡
For a person label, test whether you can paraphrase the phrase as “the person/people who ….” If the clause instead means “is about to …,” you are looking at a prospective construction, not an occupation noun.

Everyday productivity and lexical competition

Speakers coin वाला phrases freely when an established occupation name is unknown, too formal, or irrelevant. गाड़ी चलाने वाला is transparent everyday Hindi. It competes with English-derived ड्राइवर, Sanskrit-derived चालक (formal), and occasionally Sanskritic सारथी in specialized or literary contexts, where its older “charioteer” association matters. These are alternatives with different registers, not exact replacements in every sentence. Productive वाला also attaches freely to Perso-Arabic bases in expressions such as सब्ज़ीवाला, दफ़्तर वाला, and दरवाज़े वाला; the source of the base does not change वाला agreement.

बोलचाल में हम उन्हें ड्राइवर कहते हैं, लेकिन फ़ॉर्म में ‘वाहन चालक’ लिखा है।

bolcāl meṃ ham unheṃ ḍrāivar kahte haiṃ, lekin form meṃ ‘vāhan cālak’ likhā hai.

In conversation we call him the driver, but the form says ‘vehicle operator.’

The वाला formation is especially useful when the role is temporary or highly specific: दरवाज़े पर नाम लिखने वाला, “the person writing names at the door.” A heavy phrase like that normally stays open. Conversely, a conventional word may have associations that its parts do not fully predict. घरवाला/घरवाली commonly means “husband/wife” (informal, regional and speaker-dependent), so it should not automatically be used for “house owner.”

रजिस्ट्रेशन करने वाली सामने वाले कमरे में बैठी हैं।

rajisṭreśan karne vālī sāmne vāle kamre meṃ baiṭhī haiṃ.

The woman handling registration is sitting in the room opposite.

English bases can occur inside a Hindi phrase—रजिस्ट्रेशन करने वाली—because करना integrates the borrowed noun into Hindi verbal grammar. Attaching English -er freely inside Devanagari or inventing a Sanskrit-looking label is not required.

Gender, respect, and inclusive reference

The suffix agrees with the person or omitted head it denotes, not with a noun inside the base. In चाय वाली महिला, feminine महिला motivates वाली; चाय does not. For a mixed or unspecified group, masculine plural वाले is the conventional default, though official inclusive prose may rephrase with लोग, कर्मचारी, or a recognized neutral occupational noun.

ऑनलाइन आवेदन करने वाले लोग पहचान-पत्र तैयार रखें।

onlāin āvedan karne vāle log pahcān-patra taiyār rakheṃ.

People applying online should keep their identity documents ready.

This plural phrase does not claim that every applicant is male. It is the conventional mixed/unspecified plural agreement pattern. Where gender visibility is important, आवेदन करने वाले और करने वालियाँ is grammatical but heavy; आवेदक or आवेदन करने वाले लोग is usually smoother (formal).

Key Takeaways

  • Noun + वाला creates a context-sensitive association; verb + -ने वाला identifies the person who performs an action.
  • वाला agrees and declines: वाला, वाले, वाली, वालों, वालियाँ, वालियों.
  • Short conventional formations are often written together, while long phrases remain separate.
  • Everyday वाला labels coexist with English loans, Sanskritic official terms, and Perso-Arabic vocabulary; choose by meaning and register.
