Adding वाला to descriptive or relational material does more than lengthen an adjective. A bare adjective directly assigns a property—नीला कप “a blue cup”—whereas नीला वाला कप normally selects “the blue cup/blue kind” from an understood contrast set. With nouns, places, and time expressions, वाला instead builds relations such as “having,” “from,” “associated with,” or “located at”: बालकनी वाला कमरा “a room with a balcony.”
Bare property versus contrastive selection
The clearest pair contrasts ordinary description with identification among alternatives.
मुझे नीला कप चाहिए।
mujhe nīlā kap cāhie.
I need a blue cup.
मुझे नीला वाला कप चाहिए, हरा वाला नहीं।
mujhe nīlā vālā kap cāhie, harā vālā nahīṃ.
I want the blue cup, not the green one.
The first sentence merely specifies color. The second assumes that blue and green options are already salient. In neutral educated speech, नीला कप is sufficient unless this selecting or “the one characterized by X” meaning matters. Adjective + वाला as a selector is especially common in informal conversation.
Agreement: the whole chain follows the head
वाला is declinable. When a declinable adjective occurs inside the construction, it normally agrees too.
| Features | Phrase |
|---|---|
| masculine singular direct | बड़ा वाला कमरा |
| masculine plural direct | बड़े वाले कमरे |
| masculine singular oblique | बड़े वाले कमरे में |
| masculine plural oblique | बड़े वाले कमरों में |
| feminine, any number/case | बड़ी वाली खिड़की / बड़ी वाली खिड़कियों में |
बड़े वाले कमरे में मेहमान सोएँगे।
baṛe vāle kamre meṃ mehmān soẽge.
The guests will sleep in the larger room.
बड़ी वाली खिड़कियाँ सड़क की ओर खुलती हैं।
baṛī vālī khiṛkiyā̃ saṛak kī or khultī haiṃ.
The larger windows open toward the street.
An invariant adjective remains invariant even though वाला changes: लाल वाला डिब्बा, लाल वाले डिब्बे, लाल वाली पेटी. This separates morphological agreement from semantic modification. लाल modifies the same head as वाला, but its lexical class supplies no gender-number-case endings.
लाल वाली फ़ाइलें अभी मत हटाइए।
lāl vālī fāileṃ abhī mat haṭāie.
Please do not remove the red files yet.
Noun + वाला: having and association
After a noun, वाला creates a productive relational adjective. The exact relation comes from context rather than from one fixed English preposition.
| Phrase | Likely relation |
|---|---|
| बालकनी वाला कमरा | a room with a balcony |
| चश्मे वाली महिला | the woman wearing/characterized by glasses |
| दिल्ली वाला दोस्त | the friend from/associated with Delhi |
| चाय वाला कप | the cup used for/containing tea |
हमने बालकनी वाला छोटा फ़्लैट किराए पर लिया है।
hamne bālkanī vālā choṭā flaiṭ kirāe par liyā hai.
We have rented the small apartment with a balcony.
चश्मे वाली महिला ने मुझे सही रास्ता बताया।
caśme vālī mahilā ne mujhe sahī rāstā batāyā.
The woman with glasses showed me the right way.
The source noun does not control agreement. Feminine महिला selects वाली, while masculine oblique चश्मे belongs inside the relation. Because English may use with, from, a compound noun, or a relative clause, no single word-for-word gloss covers the construction.
Place and time expressions
Locative and temporal expressions readily become identifying modifiers: ऊपर वाला कमरा “the upstairs room,” कल वाली बैठक “the meeting associated with कल.” Since कल can mean yesterday or tomorrow, tense and context resolve the date.
मेरा दफ़्तर ऊपर वाला है, सीढ़ियों के पास।
merā daftar ūpar vālā hai, sīṛhiyoṃ ke pās.
My office is the upstairs one, near the stairs.
कल वाली बैठक अब शुक्रवार को होगी।
kal vālī baiṭhak ab śukravār ko hogī.
The meeting that was scheduled for tomorrow will now be on Friday.
The first वाला phrase is predicative; it still agrees with masculine दफ़्तर. The second is attributive and feminine because of बैठक. This construction is different from future करने वाला है “is about to do,” treated under prospective वाला constructions.
Degree and conventional meaning shifts
Degree applies to the descriptive material inside the construction, not to वाला itself: सबसे बड़ा वाला कमरा “the largest one/room,” ज़्यादा महँगा वाला फ़ोन “the more expensive phone” (informal). Bare बहुत वाला has no general meaning “very.”
सबसे सस्ता वाला पैकेज दो लोगों के लिए काफ़ी है।
sabse sastā vālā paikej do logoṃ ke lie kāfī hai.
The cheapest package is sufficient for two people. (informal)
Some combinations conventionalize. पहले वाला usually means “the previous one” rather than literally “the one in first place,” and घरवाला/घरवाली can mean spouse in everyday usage; that lexicalized pair has social and regional nuances and should not be mechanically derived whenever “person of the house” is intended.
पहले वाला रास्ता छोटा था, लेकिन वहाँ बहुत ट्रैफ़िक था।
pahle vālā rāstā choṭā thā, lekin vahā̃ bahut ṭraifik thā.
The previous route was shorter, but there was a lot of traffic there.
Agreement in a ने-clause
रीना ने बालकनी वाला कमरा चुना।
rīnā ne bālkanī vālā kamrā cunā.
Reena chose the room with a balcony.
Masculine कमरा controls वाला. Because the object is unmarked, perfective चुना also agrees with it; feminine रीना ने controls neither form. If the object were feminine, both would change: रीना ने खिड़की वाली जगह चुनी.
Common Mistakes
❌ हमें बालकनी वाली कमरा चाहिए।
Incorrect—वाला agrees with masculine कमरा, not feminine बालकनी.
✅ हमें बालकनी वाला कमरा चाहिए।
hameṃ bālkanī vālā kamrā cāhie.
We need a room with a balcony.
❌ नीले वाला कप मेरा है।
Incorrect in a direct masculine singular phrase—the inner adjective and वाला take -ा.
✅ नीला वाला कप मेरा है।
nīlā vālā kap merā hai.
The blue cup is mine.
❌ यह बहुत वाला महँगा फ़ोन है।
Incorrect—बहुत modifies the descriptive adjective, not वाला.
✅ यह बहुत महँगा फ़ोन है।
yah bahut mahãgā fon hai.
This is a very expensive phone.
❌ सीमा ने खिड़की वाला सीट चुनी।
Incorrect—the ने-marked agent does not control वाला; feminine सीट does.
✅ सीमा ने खिड़की वाली सीट चुनी।
sīmā ne khiṛkī vālī sīṭ cunī.
Seema chose the window seat.
Key Takeaways
- Bare adjectives describe; adjective + वाला often selects from salient alternatives.
- Noun, place, and time expressions + वाला create context-dependent relations such as having, origin, location, or association.
- वाला agrees with the modified head; an inner adjective follows its own declinable or invariant class.
- Degree modifies the descriptive base, and ने never makes an agent the controller of an object-internal वाला.
