Hindi turns properties and relationships into nouns with several suffixes. Two frequent patterns are -पन, as in भोला → भोलापन “innocent → innocence/naivety,” and -ई, as in ग़रीब → ग़रीबी “poor → poverty.” Both can resemble English -ness, but they differ in gender, productivity, register, and the kinds of meanings that have become conventional.
-पन: a quality viewed as a state or behavior
-पन attaches especially readily to adjectives and person-oriented descriptions. The result is normally a masculine mass noun: बचपन “childhood,” पागलपन “madness/craziness,” अपनापन “a feeling of belonging or warmth,” भोलापन “innocence/naivety,” and मीठापन “sweetness.”
| Base | Abstract noun | Typical sense |
|---|---|---|
| भोला | भोलापन | innocence, sometimes naivety |
| मीठा | मीठापन | sweetness in taste or manner |
| अपना | अपनापन | warmth, sense of belonging |
| पागल | पागलपन | madness, a crazy act |
| बच्चा | बचपन | childhood |
उसकी आवाज़ के मीठेपन ने सबका ध्यान खींचा।
uskī āvāz ke mīṭhepan ne sabkā dhyān khīñcā.
The sweetness of her voice caught everyone's attention.
The direct form is मीठापन, but the oblique form before ने is मीठेपन. This is a special whole-word alternation found in -पन formations built on declinable -आ adjectives: the adjective-like internal element alternates मीठा- → मीठे- inside the derived noun. It should not be analyzed as the ordinary declension of a generic consonant-final noun. Learn the direct–oblique pair मीठापन–मीठेपन as the inflectional pattern of the complete formation.
नए शहर में भी पड़ोसियों ने हमें अपनापन दिया।
nae śahar meṃ bhī paṛosiyoṃ ne hameṃ apnāpan diyā.
Even in the new city, the neighbors made us feel a sense of belonging.
उस एक गलती को पागलपन कहना ठीक नहीं होगा।
us ek galtī ko pāgalpan kahnā ṭhīk nahīṃ hogā.
It would not be fair to call that one mistake madness.
-पन is productive in informal evaluation. A speaker may use फ़िल्मीपन “a filmy, melodramatic quality” or अंग्रेज़ीपन “Englishness.” Such coinages are understandable, but their tone can be playful, critical, or reductive. An interpretable form is not automatically a neutral dictionary term.
संवादों का फ़िल्मीपन जानबूझकर रखा गया है।
saṃvādoṃ kā filmīpan jānbūjhkar rakhā gayā hai.
The melodramatic, film-like quality of the dialogue was deliberate.
-ई: several lexical families, usually feminine
Abstract nouns ending in long -ई are normally feminine, but -ई does not have just one meaning. It forms states such as ग़रीबी “poverty” and गर्मी “heat,” relationships such as दोस्ती “friendship,” emotions such as ख़ुशी “happiness,” and activities or practices such as चोरी “theft.” Many are old, lexicalized words rather than outputs of a rule that can be applied freely today.
इस इलाके में ग़रीबी पिछले दस साल में कम हुई है।
is ilāqe meṃ ġarībī pichle das sāl meṃ kam huī hai.
Poverty in this area has decreased over the past ten years.
हमारी दोस्ती स्कूल के दिनों में शुरू हुई थी।
hamārī dostī skūl ke dinoṃ meṃ śurū huī thī.
Our friendship began during our school days.
Feminine agreement—हुई, थी—belongs to the derived noun. Compare masculine अपनापन अच्छा लगा with feminine दोस्ती अच्छी लगी. English gives no reliable clue because its abstract nouns do not trigger adjective or verb gender agreement. The wider pattern is explained under noun gender.
दोपहर की गर्मी अचानक बढ़ गई।
dopahar kī garmī acānak baṛh gaī.
The afternoon heat suddenly increased.
The written boundary is part of the lexical form. ग़रीब + ई → ग़रीबी and दोस्त + ई → दोस्ती are transparent, but गर्म + ई → गर्मी does not justify spelling the word with a separated suffix. ख़ुशी is historically related to ख़ुश, yet speakers learn and use it as a familiar whole. Do not mechanically attach ई to any adjective: लंबी already means “long, feminine,” not “length.” The normal abstract noun is लंबाई, with -आई.
When both ideas are nearby
Sometimes several abstract nouns occupy neighboring semantic territory but differ in perspective. मीठापन highlights the perceptible quality of being sweet; मिठास is a well-established feminine noun for sweetness and can sound more lexical or expressive. बड़प्पन means magnanimity or greatness of character, whereas बड़ाई can mean praise, boasting, or greatness depending on context. They are not automatic stylistic variants.
जीत के बाद भी उसने विरोधी की तारीफ़ की—यही उसका बड़प्पन है।
jīt ke bād bhī usne virodhī kī tārīf kī—yahī uskā baṛappan hai.
Even after winning, he praised his opponent—that is his magnanimity.
वह अपनी बड़ाई खुद करता रहता है।
vah apnī baṛāī xud kartā rahtā hai.
He keeps singing his own praises.
Because derived words conventionalize, the meaning of a whole can narrow or drift. भोलापन may be praised as innocence or criticized as gullibility. चालाकी can mean cleverness, but often suggests a trick. A suffix supplies a category, not a complete evaluation.
थोड़ी चालाकी से उसने काम जल्दी करवा लिया।
thoṛī cālākī se usne kām jaldī karvā liyā.
With a bit of clever maneuvering, she got the work done quickly.
Competing learned and Perso-Arabic resources
Contemporary Hindi offers different abstract-noun vocabularies. In a discussion of humaneness, Sanskrit-derived मानवता is common in formal prose; Perso-Arabic इंसानियत is extremely natural in conversation and emotional rhetoric. A possible इंसानपन sounds coined and contextually evaluative, not like a neutral substitute for both.
रिपोर्ट में ‘मानवता’ लिखा है, लेकिन दादी ने कहा, ‘मुसीबत में इंसानियत दिखाओ।’
riporṭ meṃ ‘mānavtā’ likhā hai, lekin dādī ne kahā, ‘musībat meṃ insāniyat dikhāo.’
The report uses ‘humanity,’ but Grandma said, ‘Show some human decency in times of trouble.’
This contrast illustrates register without declaring one layer “more Hindi.” Sanskritic, inherited, and Perso-Arabic formations all belong to modern usage. English loans can also become bases in playful -पन forms, but established formal writing normally prefers a conventional Hindi abstract noun or an analytic phrase.
Common Mistakes
❌ उसकी दोस्ती बहुत पुराना है।
Incorrect—दोस्ती is feminine and requires feminine agreement.
✅ उसकी दोस्ती बहुत पुरानी है।
uskī dostī bahut purānī hai.
His friendship is very old.
❌ इस रस का मीठापन अच्छी है।
Incorrect—मीठापन is masculine even though its English equivalent has no gender.
✅ इस रस का मीठापन अच्छा है।
is ras kā mīṭhāpan acchā hai.
The sweetness of this juice is pleasant.
❌ कमरे की लंबी नाप लो।
Incorrect if “length” is intended—लंबी is a feminine adjective, not the abstract noun.
✅ कमरे की लंबाई नाप लो।
kamre kī lambāī nāp lo.
Measure the length of the room.
❌ उसके व्यवहार में बहुत बचपनी थी।
Incorrect—do not invent a feminine -ई noun here; use the conventional evaluative noun बचपना or बचकानापन.
✅ उसके व्यवहार में बहुत बचपना था।
uske vyavahār meṃ bahut bacpanā thā.
There was a lot of childishness in his behavior.
Key Takeaways
- -पन normally forms masculine nouns for qualities, states, and characteristic behavior; it remains productively evaluative.
- -ई nouns are normally feminine but belong to several largely lexicalized semantic families.
- A derived noun controls its own agreement: अपनापन मिला versus दोस्ती मिली.
- Meaning and register belong to the whole word. Do not assume that -पन, -ई, -ता, -आई, and -ियत are freely interchangeable versions of English -ness.
