Gender pairs and derivational suffixes

Hindi sometimes names male and female people or animals with related words: शिक्षक–शिक्षिका “male teacher–female teacher,” घोड़ा–घोड़ी “stallion/horse–mare.” These are word-formation pairs, not merely different agreement forms. The resulting noun has its own lexical gender, and that gender then controls adjectives, participles, and other agreement.

Three kinds of gender pair

The first type is a transparent inherited alternation, often -आ → -ई. It is common with familiar people and animals, but it is not a rule that learners may apply to every masculine noun.

MasculineFeminineMeaning
लड़कालड़कीboy / girl
बेटाबेटीson / daughter
घोड़ाघोड़ीhorse or stallion / mare
मुर्गामुर्गीrooster / hen or chicken

उनकी बड़ी बेटी दिल्ली में पढ़ती है।

unkī baṛī beṭī dillī meṃ paṛhtī hai.

Their elder daughter studies in Delhi.

Here बेटी is a feminine noun, so बड़ी and पढ़ती are feminine. English usually expresses sex through a separate lexical item (son/daughter) but does not make surrounding adjectives agree. Hindi derivation creates the noun; ordinary Hindi agreement then carries its gender through the clause. See noun gender for that second step.

The second type uses a recognizable suffix, especially Sanskritic -इका, written as part of the word. Compare शिक्षक → शिक्षिका, लेखक → लेखिका, and सेवक → सेविका. The stem is not simply followed by an independently pronounced ika: spelling and pronunciation form one word.

नई लेखिका को इस साल राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार मिला।

naī lekhikā ko is sāl rāṣṭrīya puraskār milā.

The new female writer received a national award this year.

हमारी शिक्षिका ने कठिन नियम आसान उदाहरणों से समझाया।

hamārī śikṣikā ne kaṭhin niyam āsān udāharaṇoṃ se samjhāyā.

Our teacher explained the difficult rule with easy examples.

The third type is lexical: the relationship must be learned with the word. अभिनेता–अभिनेत्री “actor–actress,” मालिक–मालकिन “male owner–female owner,” शेर–शेरनी “lion–lioness,” and राजा–रानी “king–queen” do not all instantiate one freely available operation. Their endings recur, but a familiar pair does not license a new coinage.

फ़िल्म की मुख्य अभिनेत्री ने अपने किरदार पर खुलकर बात की।

film kī mukhya abhinetrī ne apne kirdār par khulkar bāt kī.

The film's lead actress spoke openly about her role.

दुकान की मालकिन आज खुद हिसाब देख रही हैं।

dukān kī mālkin āj xud hisāb dekh rahī haiṃ.

The female owner of the shop is checking the accounts herself today.

💡
A visible masculine–feminine relationship does not prove that the final letters are productive suffixes. Learn frequent pairs as a small word family, and create a new feminine form only when contemporary usage supports it.

Productive, conventional, and merely possible

-इका remains available in educated Hindi for a number of established role nouns, especially stems in -क, but its productivity is limited. गायक–गायिका “singer,” नायक–नायिका “hero/heroine,” and संपादक–संपादिका “editor” are conventional. A newly borrowed occupation, however, does not automatically take it: Hindi uses डॉक्टर, मैनेजर, and इंजीनियर for people of any gender. Agreement or a title can reveal the referent.

नई मैनेजर कल हमारी टीम से मिलेंगी।

naī mainejar kal hamārī ṭīm se mileṅgī.

The new manager will meet our team tomorrow.

Nothing is missing after मैनेजर. Feminine नई and respectful feminine plural मिलेंगी show that the manager is a woman. Inventing मैनेजरी on the model of घोड़ी would not mean “female manager”; मैनेजरी can instead be understood jocularly as “managering/management behavior.”

Animal terms show the same lexical limits. शेरनी and मोरनी are normal, but biological sex is often stated analytically with नर “male” and मादा “female,” particularly in zoological or official language (formal/academic).

वन विभाग ने एक मादा तेंदुए और उसके दो बच्चों को बचाया।

van vibhāg ne ek mādā tendue aur uske do baccoṃ ko bacāyā.

The forest department rescued a female leopard and her two cubs.

This analytic strategy avoids guessing a rare or nonexistent paired noun. It is also semantically precise in scientific contexts.

Register and competing vocabularies

Contemporary Hindi draws on inherited, Sanskritic, Perso-Arabic, and English vocabulary. These layers do not share one gender-derivation system. Sanskrit-derived कलाकार “artist” is normally gender-neutral as a noun; Perso-Arabic फ़नकार is also normally gender-neutral and can sound more Urdu-leaning or literary; English आर्टिस्ट is common in informal media speech. The choice is about register and community, not about three mechanically interchangeable suffixes.

वह मशहूर कलाकार हैं; उर्दू महफ़िलों में लोग उन्हें बेहतरीन फ़नकार भी कहते हैं।

vah maśhūr kalākār haiṃ; urdū mahfiloṃ meṃ log unheṃ behtarīn fankār bhī kahte haiṃ.

She is a famous artist; at Urdu literary gatherings people also call her an outstanding artist.

By contrast, लेखिका explicitly marks a female writer. Many speakers still use it neutrally and naturally. In institutional or gender-inclusive prose, लेखक can also function as an occupational label for a person of any gender, and paired wording such as लेखक और लेखिकाएँ may be chosen when representation itself matters. Usage varies by institution and speaker; that is a live style choice, not a failure of grammar.

सम्मेलन में युवा लेखक और लेखिकाएँ अपने नए उपन्यासों पर चर्चा करेंगे।

sammelan meṃ yuvā lekhak aur lekhikāẽ apne nae upanyāsoṃ par carcā kareṅge.

At the conference, young male and female writers will discuss their new novels.

💡
Do not equate grammatical gender with biological sex. मैनेजर may refer to a woman, while a grammatically feminine inanimate noun such as कुर्सी has no biological sex. Derivation names a category; agreement follows the noun's grammatical features.

Spelling and sound at the boundary

Suffixation can reshape the visible end of a stem. In शिक्षक → शिक्षिका, do not preserve an extra full क and write शिक्षकिका. In अभिनेता → अभिनेत्री, the alternation is larger than swapping the last vowel. घोड़ा → घोड़ी retains ड़, including its nukta; घोडी is a misspelling. These forms deserve to be learned visually, not reconstructed letter by letter from English transliteration.

गायिका ने पुराने गीत को बिल्कुल नए अंदाज़ में गाया।

gāyikā ne purāne gīt ko bilkul nae andāz meṃ gāyā.

The female singer performed the old song in a completely new style.

The word family गाना “to sing,” गायक “male singer,” and गायिका “female singer” illustrates both continuity and adjustment. The shared meaning is transparent, but the exact written forms are lexical conventions. English suffixes such as -ess cannot predict which Hindi noun has a paired form.

Common Mistakes

❌ हमारी नया मैनेजरी आज आएगी।

Our new manager will come today.

❌ स्कूल की शिक्षकिका ने फ़ोन किया।

Incorrect—the established feminine form is शिक्षिका, not *शिक्षकिका*.

✅ स्कूल की शिक्षिका ने फ़ोन किया।

skūl kī śikṣikā ne fon kiyā.

The schoolteacher called.

❌ सफ़ेद घोडी खेत में दौड़ रही है।

Incorrect—घोड़ी retains the nukta letter ड़.

safed ghoṛī khet meṃ dauṛ rahī hai.

The white mare is running in the field.

❌ वह प्रतिभाशाली अभिनेतरी है।

✅ वह प्रतिभाशाली अभिनेत्री है।

vah pratibhāśālī abhinetrī hai.

She is a talented actress.

Key Takeaways

  • Hindi gender pairs include transparent -आ/-ई pairs, established suffixal families such as -क/-इका, and wholly lexical alternations.
  • The derived noun's gender controls agreement, but many modern occupation nouns remain unchanged across genders.
  • Sanskritic, Perso-Arabic, inherited, and English resources coexist; each has its own productivity and register.
  • Memorize conventional spellings and do not manufacture a feminine noun by attaching a familiar ending to any masculine or English base.
