Negative prefixes a- an- and be-

Hindi has several prefixes that create a new word with a negative or privative meaning. Sanskritic अ-/अन- appears in established words such as असत्य “untrue,” अनैतिक “unethical,” and अनादर “disrespect”; Perso-Arabic बे- appears in बेईमान “dishonest” and बेघर “homeless.” These prefixes form lexical items. They do not simply replace clause-level नहीं, and they cannot be attached freely to every adjective or English loan.

अ- and अन-: a Sanskritic privative family

The prefix अ- often precedes a consonant-initial learned base: संभव → असंभव “possible → impossible,” सत्य → असत्य “true → untrue,” समान → असमान “equal → unequal,” and शुद्ध → अशुद्ध “pure/correct → impure/incorrect.” The resulting words are common in formal writing, education, news, and careful everyday speech.

इतने कम समय में पूरा काम करना असंभव है।

itne kam samay meṃ pūrā kām karnā asambhav hai.

It is impossible to finish all the work in so little time.

फ़ॉर्म में दी गई दो जानकारियाँ असत्य निकलीं।

form meṃ dī gaī do jānkāriyā̃ asatya niklīṃ.

Two pieces of information supplied on the form turned out to be untrue.

Genuine अन- is prominent before vowel-initial bases in conventional formations such as आदर → अनादर “disrespect,” इच्छा → अनिच्छा “reluctance,” and औपचारिक → अनौपचारिक “informal.” A visible sequence अन- does not always mark that boundary, however. अनिश्चित is synchronically अ- + निश्चित, and अनैतिक is अ- + नैतिक: the written न begins the consonant-initial bases निश्चित and नैतिक. Established spelling and lexical history therefore matter more than a mechanical surface rule.

बैठक का माहौल औपचारिक नहीं, काफ़ी अनौपचारिक था।

baiṭhak kā māhaul aupacārik nahīṃ, kāfī anaupacārik thā.

The atmosphere of the meeting was not formal; it was quite informal.

ग्राहकों से जानकारी छिपाना अनैतिक है।

grāhakoṃ se jānkārī chipānā anaitik hai.

Concealing information from customers is unethical.

These adjectives are normally invariant. असमान वेतन, असमान कीमतें, and असमान परिस्थितियों में all keep असमान unchanged. Prefixation changes lexical meaning, not the adjective's agreement class.

💡
Learn अ-/अन- words as families, but memorize the actual member. The contrast helps you decode संभव–असंभव; it does not authorize forms such as अनसंभव or अईमानदार.

बे-: absence, lack, and unfavorable characterization

बे- is highly visible in Perso-Arabic and mixed vocabulary: बेईमान “dishonest,” बेकार “useless; unemployed; idle,” बेसब्र “impatient,” बेजान “lifeless,” बेघर “homeless,” बेवजह “without reason,” and बेहोश “unconscious.” It often conveys “without, lacking,” but the whole word may have conventional meanings that go beyond that paraphrase.

कई परिवार बाढ़ के बाद बेघर हो गए।

kaī parivār bāṛh ke bād beghar ho gae.

Many families became homeless after the flood.

बेवजह बहस करने से समस्या हल नहीं होगी।

bevajah bahas karne se samasyā hal nahīṃ hogī.

Arguing for no reason will not solve the problem.

इतनी देर इंतज़ार करके बच्चे बेसब्र हो रहे थे।

itnī der intazār karke bacce besabr ho rahe the.

After waiting so long, the children were becoming impatient.

The pattern remains available for some transparent coinages, especially when “lacking X” is immediately intelligible. Still, productivity is constrained by convention and register. बेघर is an established serious term; बेनींद occurs in poetic or regional usage (literary/regional), while everyday Hindi more naturally says नींद नहीं आ रही “I can't sleep.” A possible formation is not necessarily the neutral one.

💡
With बे-, ask whether the prefixed form is a recognized word and whether it has lexicalized connotations. बेकार can mean “useless” or “unemployed,” not merely “not working at this moment.”

Word negation versus clause negation

A prefix creates a property; नहीं denies a proposition or constituent. Compare वह बेईमान है “he is dishonest” with वह ईमानदार नहीं है “he is not honest.” The first assigns a conventional negative trait and is often stronger. The second merely rejects the description “honest” and may leave intermediate possibilities open.

योजना असफल नहीं हुई; उसे बस छह महीने के लिए टाला गया है।

yojnā asaphal nahīṃ huī; use bas chah mahīne ke lie ṭālā gayā hai.

The plan did not fail; it has merely been postponed for six months.

Here असफल supplies the lexical concept “unsuccessful/failed,” while नहीं negates the claim that this concept applies. Two negative-looking elements do not automatically cancel each other morphologically; syntax determines that नहीं scopes over असफल हुई. The fundamentals of predicate negation are covered under नहीं in finite clauses.

राहुल आज दफ़्तर में नहीं है, लेकिन वह बेकार नहीं है—आज उसकी छुट्टी है।

rāhul āj daftar meṃ nahīṃ hai, lekin vah bekār nahīṃ hai—āj uskī chuṭṭī hai.

Rahul isn't at work today, but he isn't unemployed—today is his day off.

This contrast also blocks an easy English transfer. बेघर means lacking a home, not simply “not at home.” Temporary absence requires घर पर नहीं. Likewise, बेहोश means unconscious, not merely “not alert” in every figurative context.

Semantic opposites are not always exact complements

Some prefixed words have narrower or more evaluative meanings than “not X.” असामान्य means unusual or abnormal; सामान्य नहीं can simply deny that something is normal without selecting a specific alternative. अनजान is lexicalized: it means unknown or unfamiliar and, for a person, “stranger/unaware,” but there is no free modern adjective जान meaning “known,” and speakers do not productively derive it from जानना. बेफ़िक्र means carefree or unconcerned, which may be praise or criticism.

रिपोर्ट में कुछ असामान्य आँकड़े हैं, लेकिन वे ज़रूरी नहीं कि ग़लत हों।

riporṭ meṃ kuch asāmānya ā̃kaṛe haiṃ, lekin ve zarūrī nahīṃ ki ġalat hoṃ.

The report contains some unusual figures, but they are not necessarily wrong.

वह रास्ते से अनजान थी, इसलिए हमने उसे स्टेशन तक छोड़ा।

vah rāste se anjān thī, islie hamne use sṭeśan tak choṛā.

She was unfamiliar with the route, so we accompanied her to the station.

The meaning of a prefixed word therefore belongs partly to the lexicon. English un-, in-, and non- may suggest a translation, but they do not tell you which Hindi prefix is conventional.

Register and competing Hindi-Urdu options

Sanskritic अनौपचारिक is standard in administrative and academic Hindi. Perso-Arabic ग़ैर-रस्मी carries a more Urdu-oriented register, while English-derived इनफ़ॉर्मल is common in urban code-mixing (informal). All can translate informal, but their collocations and social tone differ.

निमंत्रण में ‘अनौपचारिक बातचीत’ लिखा था, मगर उर्दू कार्यक्रम के संचालक ने इसे ‘ग़ैर-रस्मी गुफ़्तगू’ कहा।

nimantraṇ meṃ ‘anaupacārik bātcīt’ likhā thā, magar urdū kāryakram ke sañcālak ne ise ‘ġair-rasmī guftagū’ kahā.

The invitation said ‘informal conversation,’ but the host of the Urdu program called it ‘ġair-rasmī guftagū.’

Similarly, असफल is a neutral formal word for unsuccessful, while नाकाम is extremely common and Perso-Arabic; बेकार usually means useless or unemployed and is not an exact substitute. Modern Hindi does not force every negative concept into one morphological system.

पहला प्रयास नाकाम रहा, लेकिन पूरी परियोजना को असफल कहना जल्दबाज़ी होगी।

pahlā prayās nākām rahā, lekin pūrī pariyojnā ko asaphal kahnā jaldabāzī hogī.

The first attempt failed, but it would be premature to call the entire project unsuccessful.

Spelling and boundaries

These prefixes are normally written directly with the base: असुरक्षित, अनौपचारिक, बेईमान. A space turns the sequence into separate material and a Latin hyphen is not normally inserted. Preserve nukta letters in established Perso-Arabic words: बेफ़िक्र, not बेफिक्र, in careful spelling; ग़ैर-रस्मी uses a hyphen by established convention for the independent bound element ग़ैर-, which is a different pattern.

Common Mistakes

❌ यह काम अनसंभव है।

Incorrect—the established Sanskritic form is असंभव, not *अनसंभव*.

✅ यह काम असंभव है।

yah kām asambhav hai.

This task is impossible.

❌ वह आज बेघर है, शाम को लौट आएगा।

Incorrect if temporary absence is intended—बेघर means homeless, not away from home.

✅ वह आज घर पर नहीं है, शाम को लौट आएगा।

vah āj ghar par nahīṃ hai, śām ko lauṭ āegā.

He isn't at home today; he'll return in the evening.

❌ यह एक बे-ईमान सौदा था।

Incorrect spelling—बेईमान is written as one word without an English-style hyphen.

✅ यह एक बेईमान सौदा था।

yah ek beīmān saudā thā.

It was a dishonest deal.

❌ उसका जवाब अनसही था।

Incorrect—Hindi does not freely prefix अन- to every adjective; use ग़लत or सही नहीं here.

✅ उसका जवाब ग़लत था।

uskā javāb ġalat thā.

His answer was wrong.

Key Takeaways

  • Sanskritic अ-/अन- and Perso-Arabic बे- create lexical words, not a general-purpose equivalent of English un-.
  • अ-/अन- distribution is visible in word families but must be learned from established forms; बे- often conveys absence or lack.
  • A prefixed adjective is usually invariant and can itself be negated by नहीं.
  • Sanskritic, Perso-Arabic/Urdu, and English options coexist with different registers and meanings; translate the whole word, not just the prefix.
