Sanskritic prefixes pra- vi- and su-

The learned Sanskritic layer of Hindi contains many words beginning with प्र-, वि-, and सु-. Knowing these recurring pieces helps you connect words such as गति → प्रगति, शुद्ध → विशुद्ध, and योग्य → सुयोग्य. It does not, however, give you three prefixes that can be added freely to any modern Hindi word. Most formations must be learned as established vocabulary, and the clearest productivity appears in formal naming and technical coinage.

Three recurring meanings, not three mechanical translations

The historical meanings provide useful orientation:

PrefixFrequent contributionEstablished examplesTypical register
प्र-forward, forth, intensified, initiatedप्रगति, प्रचार, प्रसारण, प्रस्थानneutral to formal
वि-apart, differentiated, specially, awayविभाजन, विश्लेषण, विशेष, विरोधoften formal/academic
सु-good, suitable, easy, wellसुगम, सुयोग्य, सुविचार, सुशासनoften formal or evaluative

These glosses are tendencies, not equations. प्र- is not always English pro-, वि- is not a general equivalent of dis- or de-, and सु- cannot be attached wherever English uses good or well. The meaning of the whole established word remains decisive.

इस साल शहर की सफ़ाई में काफ़ी प्रगति हुई है।

is sāl śahar kī safāī meṃ kāfī pragati huī hai.

The city has made considerable progress in cleanliness this year.

रिपोर्ट में ख़र्च का विस्तृत विश्लेषण दिया गया है।

riporṭ meṃ xarc kā vistrit viśleṣaṇ diyā gayā hai.

The report provides a detailed analysis of the expenditure.

नई वेबसाइट मोबाइल पर भी सुगम है।

naī vebsāiṭ mobāil par bhī sugam hai.

The new website is easy to use on mobile too.

English speakers often expect a prefix to contribute the same clear meaning every time. In this layer, historical composition has frequently become opaque. A speaker may recognize वि- across a learned word family without actively parsing विचार “thought,” विकास “development,” or विरोध “opposition” into a prefix plus an independently meaningful remainder.

💡
Treat prefix recognition as a vocabulary-learning aid. It can reveal a family resemblance, but it does not license a new word unless that formation is conventional in Hindi.

प्र- in established noun and verb families

प्र- occurs prominently in nouns for processes, public action, movement, and institutional activity: प्रगति “progress,” प्रचार “publicity/campaigning,” प्रसारण “broadcasting,” प्रयोग “use; experiment,” प्रवेश “entry/admission,” and प्रस्थान “departure” (formal). Some support transparent modern families: प्रचार, प्रचारक “campaigner,” and प्रचार करना “to publicize.” Others are best stored as whole lexemes.

विश्वविद्यालय में प्रवेश के लिए ऑनलाइन आवेदन करना होगा।

viśvavidyālay meṃ praveś ke lie onlāin āvedan karnā hogā.

You will have to apply online for admission to the university.

मैच का सीधा प्रसारण रात आठ बजे शुरू होगा।

maic kā sīdhā prasāraṇ rāt āṭh baje śurū hogā.

The live broadcast of the match will begin at eight tonight.

The prefix does not determine gender. प्रगति is feminine, प्रचार and प्रवेश are masculine, and प्रक्रिया “process” is feminine. Hindi agreement belongs to the complete noun, not to प्र-. Category also comes from the full derivation: प्रभाव is a noun “effect,” प्रभावी an invariant adjective “effective,” and प्रभावित an invariant participial adjective “affected.”

इस फ़ैसले का ग्रामीण इलाक़ों पर गहरा प्रभाव पड़ेगा।

is faisle kā grāmīṇ ilāqoṃ par gahrā prabhāv paṛegā.

This decision will have a profound effect on rural areas.

In official terminology, प्र- can participate in deliberate Sanskritic coinages, but that is a controlled, specialist kind of productivity (formal/academic). It is not normal everyday grammar to place प्र- before an English loan or an inherited colloquial adjective.

वि-: separation, distinction, and lexical opacity

The idea “apart or differentiated” remains visible in pairs such as भाग → विभाग “part → department/division” and in विभाजन “division.” It is also conceptually accessible in विश्लेषण “analysis,” where a whole is examined by separating its components. But common वि- words span meanings too diverse to derive online: विशेष “special,” विकास “development,” विचार “thought,” विरोध “opposition,” and विदेश “foreign country/abroad.”

यह विभाग ग्रामीण विकास की योजनाएँ देखता है।

yah vibhāg grāmīṇ vikās kī yojnāẽ dekhtā hai.

This department oversees rural-development programs.

समिति के दो सदस्यों ने प्रस्ताव का विरोध किया।

samiti ke do sadasyoṃ ne prastāv kā virodh kiyā.

Two members of the committee opposed the proposal.

A particularly useful adjective family is शुद्ध “pure/correct,” विशुद्ध “pure in an emphatic or technical sense,” and अशुद्ध “impure/incorrect.” विशुद्ध often sounds more elevated than ordinary बिल्कुल शुद्ध (formal/literary). Prefixes can therefore add register and stance as well as dictionary meaning.

लेखक ने इसे विशुद्ध कल्पना बताया, सच्ची घटना नहीं।

lekhak ne ise viśuddh kalpanā batāyā, saccī ghaṭnā nahīṃ.

The author described it as pure fiction, not a true incident.

Spelling is normally closed: विभाग, not वि भाग or वि-विभाग. Learned consonant clusters remain in careful spelling—विश्लेषण, विस्तृत, विशिष्ट—even when everyday pronunciation simplifies them somewhat.

सु-: positive evaluation with limited productivity

सु- contributes a favorable evaluation in सुगम “easy/accessible,” सुयोग्य “well-qualified,” सुविचार “good thought/maxim,” सुशासन “good governance,” and सुपाठ्य “readable” (formal/academic). It is most alive in evaluative institutional language, slogans, and consciously Sanskritic coinage, but individual acceptability still has to be learned.

चयन समिति ने इस पद के लिए एक सुयोग्य उम्मीदवार चुना है।

cayan samiti ne is pad ke lie ek suyogya ummīdvār cunā hai.

The selection committee has chosen a well-qualified candidate for this post.

सुशासन केवल नारा नहीं, जवाबदेही की व्यवस्था है।

suśāsan keval nārā nahīṃ, javābdehī kī vyavasthā hai.

Good governance is not merely a slogan; it is a system of accountability.

English well- is far more freely productive. Hindi usually says अच्छी तरह लिखा हुआ लेख “a well-written article,” not an improvised सु- compound. Established सुलिखित does exist (formal/literary), but it belongs to a learned register and is not the automatic counterpart of every English well-X adjective.

💡
For everyday production, use an analytic phrase such as अच्छी तरह... unless you already know the सु- formation as a word. Recognition is broader than safe coinage.

Competing lexical layers

Contemporary Hindi selects among inherited phrasing, Sanskritic formations, Perso-Arabic vocabulary, and English loans. The formal Sanskritic प्रस्थान means “departure”; everyday announcements also use it, but conversation normally prefers निकलना “to leave.” सुयोग्य उम्मीदवार is formal; क़ाबिल उम्मीदवार, with Perso-Arabic क़ाबिल, is natural and less Sanskritized; क्वालिफ़ाइड कैंडिडेट is urban code-mixing (informal/professional).

सूचना-पट्ट पर ‘प्रस्थान’ लिखा है, लेकिन हम घर से निकलने की बात कर रहे थे।

sūcnā-paṭṭ par ‘prasthān’ likhā hai, lekin ham ghar se nikalne kī bāt kar rahe the.

The information board says ‘departure,’ but we were talking about leaving home.

विज्ञापन में ‘सुयोग्य अभ्यर्थी’ है; बातचीत में प्रबंधक ने ‘क़ाबिल उम्मीदवार’ कहा।

vijñāpan meṃ ‘suyogya abhyarthī’ hai; bātcīt meṃ prabandhak ne ‘qābil ummīdvār’ kahā.

The advertisement says ‘suitably qualified applicant’; in conversation the manager said ‘capable candidate.’

This coexistence is not random ornamentation. The Sanskritic choices often signal official, educational, or ideological style (formal/academic); Perso-Arabic choices may be neutral or Urdu-leaning; English loans often signal a workplace or urban code-mixed setting (informal/professional). Native inherited verbs frequently carry the everyday sentence around them.

Agreement and category after prefixation

Most Sanskritic adjectives in these families are invariant: विशेष मौका, विशेष छूट, विशेष अवसरों. Do not add Hindi -ई or -ए merely because the noun is feminine or plural. Nouns take their own gender and case morphology: feminine प्रक्रिया → प्रक्रियाएँ → प्रक्रियाओं, but masculine प्रयोग → प्रयोग → प्रयोगों.

नई प्रक्रियाओं का विशेष प्रशिक्षण अगले हफ़्ते होगा।

naī prakriyāoṃ kā viśeṣ praśikṣaṇ agle hafte hogā.

Special training in the new procedures will take place next week.

The learner's task is therefore twofold: recognize the learned morphological family, then learn the output as a Hindi noun or adjective with its own gender, inflection, collocations, and register.

For the wider agreement system behind forms such as विशेष सुविधा, see indeclinable adjectives. The broader stylistic choice between learned and everyday vocabulary is covered in Sanskritized vocabulary and compounds.

Key Takeaways

  • प्र-, वि-, and सु- organize many learned word families, but their modern meanings are often partly lexicalized.
  • The whole word determines gender, category, agreement, spelling, and register.
  • Closed spelling is normal, and learned stem shapes must be memorized rather than mechanically assembled.
  • Sanskritic formations coexist with inherited phrases, Perso-Arabic words, and English loans; each option carries its own collocations and social tone.
