Hindi reduplication repeats all or part of an expression to impose a particular structure on its meaning. एक-एक presents members one at a time, घर-घर distributes an event across houses, धीरे-धीरे spreads a change through time, and लंबी-लंबी presents several salient long items. Repetition is therefore not a single suffix-like operation meaning “very.” Its interpretation depends on the word class, inflection, and the event around it.
This page brings the productive patterns together. The more narrowly syntactic behavior of repeated nouns is covered under reduplicated nouns, while manner expressions such as धीरे-धीरे have their own adverb reduplication page.
Full reduplication: one form, several operators
In full reduplication, the relevant spoken form is repeated, normally with a hyphen in careful modern writing. The construction contributes an operator over the base: it can distribute over individuals, repeat an event, spread through a domain, or divide a quantity into portions.
| Base | Reduplicated form | Typical operation | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| एक “one” | एक-एक | each one; one by one | neutral |
| घर “house” | घर-घर | in/to every house | neutral |
| बार “occasion” | बार-बार | repeatedly | neutral |
| थोड़ा “a little” | थोड़ा-थोड़ा | in small portions | neutral |
| लंबी “long” | लंबी-लंबी | several conspicuously long items | neutral/expressive |
हर मेहमान को एक-एक फूल दिया गया।
har mehmān ko ek-ek phūl diyā gayā.
Each guest was given one flower.
स्वास्थ्यकर्मी गाँव-गाँव जाकर लोगों से मिले।
svāsthyakarmī gā̃v-gā̃v jākar logoṃ se mile.
The health workers went from village to village and met people.
The first sentence distributes flowers across guests: एक-एक says that the allocation is calculated separately for each recipient. The second distributes motion across a series of villages. English uses each, every, from X to X, or one by one; Hindi derives these readings from the repeated form plus the clause.
Inflection is copied inside the repeated unit
Reduplication applies to a form that already reflects the relevant gender, number, or case. A postposition follows the whole unit once. With a masculine -आ noun, both copies become oblique before को: बच्चा-बच्चा → बच्चे-बच्चे को. With a declinable adjective, both copies agree with the noun: लंबा-लंबा भाषण, लंबी-लंबी बातें.
मोहल्ले के बच्चे-बच्चे को यह गीत याद है।
mohalle ke bacce-bacce ko yah gīt yād hai.
Every single child in the neighborhood knows this song.
मोहल्ले का बच्चा-बच्चा यह गीत जानता है।
mohalle kā baccā-baccā yah gīt jāntā hai.
Every single child in the neighborhood knows this song.
उसने बैठक में लंबी-लंबी बातें कीं, पर कोई समाधान नहीं दिया।
usne baiṭhak meṃ lambī-lambī bāteṃ kīṃ, par koī samādhān nahīṃ diyā.
She made a series of long remarks in the meeting but offered no solution.
The plural noun बातें selects feminine plural लंबी-लंबी. In the first example, बच्चे-बच्चे को is a को-marked experiencer and cannot control है; the unmarked singular stimulus यह गीत does. Compare बच्चे-बच्चे को ये गीत याद हैं, where plural ये गीत selects हैं. The second example supplies a genuine singular distributive subject: बच्चा-बच्चा controls masculine singular जानता है even though the statement covers many children.
Case marking is not attached to only the second copy as though the first were outside the phrase. Careful standard Hindi has बच्चे-बच्चे को, not बच्चा-बच्चे को. In invariant forms, the same structure is present but not visible: घर-घर में, शहर-शहर से.
Distribution over participants and quantities
Numerals and quantifiers form especially productive distributives. दो-दो means “two each,” not simply “two twice”; थोड़ा-थोड़ा means “a little at a time” or “small amounts for each”; अलग-अलग assigns separate identity or treatment.
बच्चों ने दो-दो समोसे लिए।
baccoṃ ne do-do samose lie.
The children took two samosas each.
गर्मी में थोड़ा-थोड़ा पानी पीते रहिए।
garmī meṃ thoṛā-thoṛā pānī pīte rahie.
In hot weather, keep drinking a little water at a time. (respectful)
दोनों अर्ज़ियों पर अलग-अलग विचार किया जाएगा।
donoṃ arziyoṃ par alag-alag vicār kiyā jāegā.
The two applications will be considered separately. (formal)
With दो-दो समोसे, context supplies the distributive key—the children. If that key is absent, the phrase can be unclear, so formal prose often states it explicitly: प्रत्येक प्रतिभागी को दो-दो प्रतियाँ “two copies to each participant” (formal). Sanskritic प्रत्येक does not compete morphologically with reduplication; it can make the distribution anchor explicit while the repeated numeral specifies the allocation.
Time, iteration, and gradual change
Adverbial reduplication distributes an event over occasions or phases. बार-बार increases recurrence, but कभी-कभी yields the conventional frequency “sometimes.” धीरे-धीरे often profiles successive stages rather than mere low speed. These meanings are productive but not compositional in one uniform way.
वह बार-बार फ़ोन देख रहा था, जैसे किसी संदेश का इंतज़ार हो।
vah bār-bār fon dekh rahā thā, jaise kisī sandeś kā intazār ho.
He kept checking his phone, as if he were waiting for a message.
धीरे-धीरे कमरे की आवाज़ें साफ़ सुनाई देने लगीं।
dhīre-dhīre kamre kī āvāzeṃ sāf sunāī dene lagīṃ.
Gradually, the sounds in the room began to be heard clearly.
हम कभी-कभी रविवार को पुराने बाज़ार चले जाते हैं।
ham kabhī-kabhī ravivār ko purāne bāzār cale jāte haiṃ.
We sometimes go to the old market on Sundays.
There is no reliable rule “repetition intensifies.” It intensifies recurrence in बार-बार, attenuates frequency in कभी-कभी, and creates graduality in धीरे-धीरे. These are conventional pairings within a broader distributional logic.
Adjectival reduplication: plurality, salience, and expressive scale
Repeated adjectives commonly present multiple items as separately possessing a noticeable property: बड़े-बड़े घर “many/several imposing houses,” छोटी-छोटी गलतियाँ “numerous little mistakes.” Depending on intonation and context, the construction can add admiration, criticism, surprise, or exhaustive imagery.
उस गली में पुराने बड़े-बड़े मकान अब भी खड़े हैं।
us galī meṃ purāne baṛe-baṛe makān ab bhī khaṛe haiṃ.
Several grand old houses are still standing in that lane.
रिपोर्ट में छोटी-छोटी गलतियाँ थीं, पर निष्कर्ष सही था।
riporṭ meṃ choṭī-choṭī galtiyā̃ thīṃ, par niṣkarṣ sahī thā.
The report contained a number of small errors, but its conclusion was correct.
This differs from simple degree marking. बहुत बड़े मकान says the houses are very large; बड़े-बड़े मकान also profiles them as multiple salient instances. A singular mass noun normally does not license that pluralizing interpretation without a special contextual partition.
Productive patterns beside lexicalized repeated words
Some repeated expressions are transparently created for the occasion: a speaker can say फ़ाइल-फ़ाइल जाँचो “check every file” in a suitable instructional context. Others have conventional meanings that must be learned: आस-पास “nearby,” लेन-देन “transactions,” रहन-सहन “way of living,” and देख-रेख “care/maintenance.” The latter pairs often involve related rather than identical material and behave as established compound-like nouns.
कंपनी के सारे लेन-देन की स्वतंत्र जाँच होगी।
kampanī ke sāre len-den kī svatantra jā̃c hogī.
All of the company's transactions will be independently audited. (formal)
दादी के रहन-सहन में सादगी थी, लेकिन उनके विचार बहुत आधुनिक थे।
dādī ke rahan-sahan meṃ sādgī thī, lekin unke vicār bahut ādhunik the.
Grandmother's way of living was simple, but her ideas were very modern.
These lexicalized nouns cannot be generated by repeating arbitrary verb stems. Their grammatical gender and collocations belong to the whole word: feminine देख-रेख, masculine लेन-देन. This is the honest limit of productivity—speakers recognize a live pattern, but convention determines which paired formations become ordinary vocabulary.
Competing resources and register
Contemporary Hindi draws distributive vocabulary from several layers. Everyday inherited forms such as एक-एक and घर-घर are stylistically neutral. Sanskritic प्रत्येक “each” and क्रमशः “respectively” are prominent in official and academic prose (formal/academic). Perso-Arabic अलग-अलग is fully integrated and neutral. English expressions such as वन बाय वन occur in urban code-mixing (informal) but do not replace Hindi case and agreement.
निर्देश में ‘प्रत्येक आवेदन की अलग-अलग जाँच’ लिखा था, लेकिन अधिकारी ने समझाते हुए कहा, ‘एक-एक फ़ाइल ध्यान से देखिए।’
nirdeś meṃ ‘pratyek āvedan kī alag-alag jā̃c’ likhā thā, lekin adhikārī ne samjhāte hue kahā, ‘ek-ek fāil dhyān se dekhie.’
The instructions said ‘a separate review of each application,’ but while explaining, the officer said, ‘Look at each file carefully.’
The difference is register and packaging, not a contest between “pure” and “impure” Hindi. Reduplication remains productive across native, Sanskritic, Perso-Arabic, and English-derived bases when the result is interpretable, but some code-mixed creations are socially marked and may sound playful rather than neutral.
Common Mistakes
❌ हर बच्चों ने दो समोसे लिए।
Incorrect—हर selects a singular count noun, and it does not express the intended ‘two each’ allocation.
✅ सभी मेहमानों ने दो-दो समोसे लिए।
sabhī mehmānoṃ ne do-do samose lie.
All the guests took two samosas each.
❌ मोहल्ले के बच्चा-बच्चे को यह बात पता है।
Incorrect—the masculine -आ noun must be oblique in both copies before को.
✅ मोहल्ले के बच्चे-बच्चे को यह बात पता है।
mohalle ke bacce-bacce ko yah bāt patā hai.
Every single child in the neighborhood knows this.
❌ उसने बहुत-बहुत लंबी मेज़ खरीदी।
Incorrect for simple degree—बहुत is not normally reduplicated here to mean ‘very’; use बहुत लंबी.
✅ उसने बहुत लंबी मेज़ खरीदी।
usne bahut lambī mez xarīdī.
She bought a very long table.
❌ इन फ़ाइल-फ़ाइल में नाम जाँचो।
Incorrect—the demonstrative is plural and a postposition requires the inflected repeated noun; this phrase needs a natural plural or distributive frame.
✅ हर फ़ाइल में नाम जाँचो।
har fāil meṃ nām jā̃co.
Check the name in every file.
Key Takeaways
- Full reduplication distributes meaning over people, objects, places, occasions, portions, or stages; it does not simply mean “very.”
- Inflection belongs inside the repeated unit, while a postposition follows the complete expression once.
- Repeated nouns can trigger formally singular agreement even when they range over many individuals.
- Productive forms such as एक-एक differ from lexicalized paired nouns such as लेन-देन.
- Everyday, Sanskritic, Perso-Arabic, and English-derived resources coexist, but their register and productivity differ.
