Reduplicated adverbs धीरे-धीरे

Hindi productively repeats adverbial material: धीरे-धीरे “slowly/gradually,” बार-बार “again and again,” कभी-कभी “sometimes,” जगह-जगह “in many places.” Reduplication does not have one universal meaning. Depending on the base, it can spread an event through time or space, break it into small portions, weaken frequency, or portray repeated performance.

धीरे versus धीरे-धीरे

Single धीरे describes low speed or volume. Reduplicated धीरे-धीरे often adds duration, gradual development, or progress by small stages.

ज़रा धीरे बोलिए।

zarā dhīre bolie.

Please speak a little more softly. (respectful)

धीरे-धीरे उसकी तबीयत बेहतर होने लगी।

dhīre-dhīre uskī tabīyat behtar hone lagī.

Gradually, her health began to improve.

The second does not merely mean that improving happened at low physical speed. It presents the change as extending through successive stages.

वह सीढ़ियाँ धीरे-धीरे चढ़ रहा था।

vah sīṛhiyā̃ dhīre-dhīre caṛh rahā thā.

He was climbing the stairs slowly, step by step.

💡
With a change of state, dhīre-dhīre usually means “gradually.” With a physical activity, it can retain literal slow pace while adding an extended, stepwise view.

Repetition through time

Some reduplicated adverbs quantify how often an event recurs.

FormTypical meaning
बार-बारrepeatedly, again and again
कभी-कभीsometimes, occasionally
जल्दी-जल्दीhurriedly; several quick actions
चुपके-चुपकेsecretly, in repeated hidden moments

मुझे बार-बार वही बात समझानी पड़ती है।

mujhe bār-bār vahī bāt samjhānī paṛtī hai.

I have to explain the same thing again and again.

हम कभी-कभी काम के बाद साथ चाय पीते हैं।

ham kabhī-kabhī kām ke bād sāth cāy pīte haiṃ.

We sometimes have tea together after work.

The meanings are not predictable as “more X.” Repetition strengthens frequency with बार, but weakens it with कभी: bare कभी means “ever/at some time,” whereas कभी-कभी is the bounded frequency “sometimes.”

Distribution through space and participants

Reduplication can distribute a property or event over many locations or members.

बारिश के बाद सड़क पर जगह-जगह पानी भर गया।

bāriś ke bād saṛak par jagah-jagah pānī bhar gayā.

After the rain, water collected at many places along the road.

टीम ने घर-घर जाकर लोगों से बात की।

ṭīm ne ghar-ghar jākar logoṃ se bāt kī.

The team went from house to house and spoke with people.

जगह-जगह does not mean one place intensely; it distributes the location. घर-घर presents each house as part of a series. This is closely related to nominal distributive reduplication, but the entire repeated expression functions adverbially in these clauses.

Portion-by-portion readings

Quantitative bases can show incremental portions.

पानी थोड़ा-थोड़ा करके पीजिए।

pānī thoṛā-thoṛā karke pījie.

Drink the water a little at a time. (respectful)

बच्चों को एक-एक करके अंदर बुलाइए।

baccoṃ ko ek-ek karke andar bulāie.

Call the children inside one by one. (respectful)

करके is common after such distributive expressions but not obligatory with every reduplicated adverb. It makes the stepwise procedure explicit. The repeated form retains whatever agreement belongs inside it: थोड़ा-थोड़ा here quantifies masculine पानी; थोड़ी-थोड़ी चाय would be feminine.

Manner, attenuation, and conventional meanings

Some repeated forms are conventional manner expressions: साफ़-साफ़ “clearly/frankly,” अलग-अलग “separately/different,” चुपके-चुपके “secretly.” They are productive enough to recognize as a pattern, but not every adverb can be repeated naturally.

साफ़-साफ़ बताओ कि तुम जाना चाहते हो या नहीं।

sāf-sāf batāo ki tum jānā cāhte ho yā nahīṃ.

Tell me plainly whether you want to go or not. (informal)

Here repetition strengthens explicitness. By contrast, कभी-कभी attenuates frequency. The lexical base and construction determine the result; reduplication is not a general “very” marker.

Position and scope

The repeated adverb normally precedes the predicate it modifies. A clause-level graduality expression may also frame the clause initially, as in धीरे-धीरे उसकी तबीयत....

Focus particles attach after their host:

वह कभी-कभी ही बाहर जाता है।

vah kabhī-kabhī hī bāhar jātā hai.

He goes out only occasionally.

वही कभी-कभी बाहर जाता है।

vahī kabhī-kabhī bāhar jātā hai.

He is the one who occasionally goes out.

In the first, ही restricts the frequency. In the second, fused वही focuses the person. The same words therefore create different scope depending on particle placement.

Degree is lexically constrained. बहुत धीरे-धीरे can mean “very slowly,” because slow pace is gradable. बहुत बार-बार is not standard; use बहुत बार “many times” or simply बार-बार “repeatedly.”

💡
Do not automatically add bahut to intensify a reduplicated form. Check whether the base denotes a gradable manner, a frequency pattern, or distribution.

Exact reduplication versus echo formation

In exact reduplication, the full base repeats: धीरे-धीरे, जगह-जगह. Echo formations change the second element and often mean “X and similar things,” a different expressive construction. The hyphen makes the paired unit easy to read in modern edited Devanagari.

The larger derivational system is mapped in reduplication and distributive formation.

Hindi therefore uses morphological repetition where English may need a dedicated adverb (gradually, occasionally, repeatedly) or a phrase (from house to house). No English-style -ly ending should be added.

Common Mistakes

❌ वह धीरी-धीरी चलती है।

Incorrect—adverbial धीरे does not agree with a feminine subject when reduplicated.

✅ वह धीरे-धीरे चलती है।

vah dhīre-dhīre caltī hai.

She walks slowly.

❌ मैं बहुत बार-बार वहाँ गया।

Incorrect—use बहुत बार for a count-like frequency or बार-बार for repetition.

✅ मैं वहाँ बहुत बार गया।

maĩ vahā̃ bahut bār gayā.

I went there many times.

❌ दवा लीजिए थोड़ी-थोड़ी करके।

Marked as a neutral instruction—the portion-by-portion phrase normally precedes the verb.

✅ दवा थोड़ी-थोड़ी करके लीजिए।

davā thoṛī-thoṛī karke lījie.

Take the medicine a little at a time. (respectful)

❌ जगह-जगहें पानी भरा था।

Incorrect—adverbial जगह-जगह is a fixed repeated form, not a plural noun.

✅ जगह-जगह पानी भरा था।

jagah-jagah pānī bharā thā.

There was water in many places.

Key Takeaways

  • Reduplication can express graduality, recurrence, occasionality, distribution, or incremental portions.
  • The construction's meaning depends on the lexical base; it is not simply an intensifier.
  • Repeated adverbs normally precede the predicate, and focus particles follow the complete repeated unit.
  • Exact reduplication differs from echo formation and does not trigger subject agreement.
