In a clause introduced by कि, Hindi does not mechanically change the embedded tense just because the main verb is past. The embedded clause chooses tense, aspect, and mood according to its own reference time, its current validity, and the reporting speaker's stance. This differs sharply from the textbook English rule that turns is into was and will into would after a past reporting verb.
The absence of obligatory backshift does not mean “never change the tense.” Hindi speakers change it when the intended timeline changes. The central task is therefore to locate the embedded situation relative to the time of the report and to the speaker's present.
कि joins clauses but does not set the clock
कि marks the following clause as the content of saying, knowing, noticing, hoping, or another mental or communicative act. It does not itself impose present, past, future, indicative, or subjunctive morphology.
Compare a minimal pair with the same matrix verb and lexical content:
नीलम ने बताया कि दुकान बंद है।
nīlam ne batāyā ki dukān band hai.
Neelam said that the shop is closed.
नीलम ने बताया कि दुकान बंद थी।
nīlam ne batāyā ki dukān band thī.
Neelam said that the shop was closed.
In the first sentence, है preserves a present-state presentation: depending on context, this can reproduce Neelam's original “the shop is closed” or treat the closure as still relevant now. It does not by itself guarantee that the shop remains closed. In the second, थी explicitly confines the state to a past reference point, normally the time Neelam was speaking or the time under discussion. Past बताया licenses neither form automatically; meaning selects between them.
Simultaneous content and continuing truth
An embedded present can follow a past matrix verb when the proposition remains true, is treated as generally valid, or is deliberately reported from the current speaker's viewpoint.
प्रोफ़ेसर ने समझाया कि पानी सौ डिग्री सेल्सियस पर उबलता है।
profesar ne samjhāyā ki pānī sau ḍigrī selsiyas par ubaltā hai.
The professor explained that water boils at one hundred degrees Celsius.
Automatic English-style backshift to उबलता था would wrongly turn a general fact into a past habit. The imperfective उबलता supplies the generic viewpoint, while present है keeps the generalization current.
The same choice applies to a situation that began before the report but still holds:
आरती ने सुबह कहा कि उसकी तबीयत ठीक नहीं है।
ārtī ne subah kahā ki uskī tabīyat ṭhīk nahīṃ hai.
Aarti said this morning that she isn't feeling well.
Present है preserves the illness as present within the reported content and can keep it relevant now. If Aarti recovered and the speaker is explicitly recounting only the morning situation, ठीक नहीं थी is more natural.
आरती ने सुबह कहा कि उसकी तबीयत ठीक नहीं थी।
ārtī ne subah kahā ki uskī tabīyat ṭhīk nahīṃ thī.
Aarti said this morning that she wasn't feeling well.
The difference is semantic, not merely stylistic. है leaves the reported present unbackshifted and compatible with continuing relevance; थी deliberately closes the state inside the past frame.
Earlier-than-report content
When the embedded event precedes a past act of reporting, Hindi can use a past perfect or another completed form. The auxiliary expresses that temporal relation in combination with the perfective layer.
डॉक्टर ने बताया कि जाँच की रिपोर्ट आ गई थी।
ḍokṭar ne batāyā ki jā̃c kī riporṭ ā gaī thī.
The doctor said that the test report had arrived.
Perfective आ गई presents the arrival as complete; थी places that completion before a past reference point. If the report's arrival is instead presented as a current result, present perfect is possible:
डॉक्टर ने बताया कि जाँच की रिपोर्ट आ गई है।
ḍokṭar ne batāyā ki jā̃c kī riporṭ ā gaī hai.
The doctor said that the test report has arrived.
This is not careless tense mixing. The matrix report is past, but the embedded result is preserved as present perfect, either as the doctor's original perspective or as current relevant information. English may prefer had arrived in some contexts, whereas Hindi can openly preserve है.
Completion does not always require a perfect auxiliary. A simple perfective can narrate embedded past content when sequence is otherwise clear:
गवाह ने कहा कि कार अचानक मुड़ी और दीवार से टकरा गई।
gavāh ne kahā ki kār acānak muṛī aur dīvār se ṭakrā gaī.
The witness said that the car suddenly turned and hit the wall.
The two feminine perfectives advance the reported accident in order. Replacing them with progressives would open an internal view of the actions and blur the bounded sequence.
Later-than-report content
Hindi can retain future morphology after a past reporting verb. The future is interpreted relative to the reported plan or prediction, and context tells whether that future has already arrived from the current speaker's perspective.
विक्रम ने कहा कि वह अगले दिन लौटेगा।
vikram ne kahā ki vah agle din lauṭegā.
Vikram said that he would return the next day.
English commonly translates लौटेगा with would return, but Hindi has not converted future into a special past conditional. Masculine singular future लौटेगा remains the form that presents Vikram's return as later than the report.
If the speaker now knows the plan was not fulfilled, the future can still reproduce the content of the past prediction, while an added clause evaluates the outcome:
विक्रम ने कहा था कि वह सोमवार को लौटेगा, लेकिन वह बुधवार तक नहीं आया।
vikram ne kahā thā ki vah somvār ko lauṭegā, lekin vah budhvār tak nahīṃ āyā.
Vikram had said that he would return on Monday, but he didn't arrive until Wednesday.
The future लौटेगा belongs to Vikram's earlier commitment. Factual perfective नहीं आया belongs to the narrator's later knowledge. This layering allows Hindi to preserve the earlier perspective and then correct it.
Mood follows clause type, not matrix tense
Some कि clauses report assertions; others express commands, wishes, recommendations, or desired outcomes. Nonasserted content commonly selects the subjunctive, regardless of whether the matrix verb is present or past.
समिति ने सुझाव दिया कि बैठक एक सप्ताह के लिए टाल दी जाए।
samiti ne sujhāv diyā ki baiṭhak ek saptāh ke lie ṭāl dī jāe.
The committee recommended that the meeting be postponed for a week.
This (formal) passive subjunctive presents the postponement as a recommended outcome, not as a fact. Past दिया does not force the embedded verb into past time.
वह चाहती थी कि हम उसी शाम रुकें।
vah cāhtī thī ki ham usī śām rukeṃ.
She wanted us to stay that evening.
Subjunctive रुकें marks the stay as desired and not asserted. Compare an assertion:
उसने बताया कि हम उसी शाम वहाँ रुके थे।
usne batāyā ki ham usī śām vahā̃ ruke the.
She said that we had stayed there that evening.
Here perfective रुके plus थे presents the stay as a completed fact before the act of telling. For the logic of nonasserted forms, see the subjunctive as irrealis.
Agreement and ergativity are clause-internal
Each clause computes agreement from its own aspectual structure. A matrix ergative does not govern the embedded verb, and an embedded perfective transitive verb requires its own ergative subject.
प्रबंधक ने कहा कि सीमा ने रिपोर्ट भेज दी है।
prabandhak ne kahā ki sīmā ne riporṭ bhej dī hai.
The manager said that Seema has sent the report.
Matrix प्रबंधक ने belongs to कहा. Embedded सीमा ने belongs to perfective transitive भेज दी, whose feminine agreement comes from unmarked रिपोर्ट. Present है marks the completed sending as currently relevant. Neither instance of ने is licensed merely by reporting.
A report whose reference time changes
The following short sequence moves from a past expectation to an ongoing situation and then to a currently relevant result:
दोपहर में संवाददाता ने कहा कि नदी का पानी बढ़ रहा है। एक घंटे बाद उसने बताया कि निचली सड़क बंद कर दी गई थी। शाम तक प्रशासन ने घोषणा की कि पानी अब घट रहा है और मुख्य पुल सुरक्षित है।
dopahar meṃ saṃvāddātā ne kahā ki nadī kā pānī baṛh rahā hai. ek ghaṇṭe bād usne batāyā ki nicalī saṛak band kar dī gaī thī. śām tak praśāsan ne ghoṣṇā kī ki pānī ab ghaṭ rahā hai aur mukhya pul surakṣit hai.
At noon the correspondent said that the river was rising. An hour later, he reported that the lower road had been closed. By evening, the authorities announced that the water was now receding and the main bridge was safe.
The first बढ़ रहा है preserves an ongoing situation from the live reporting frame. Perfective passive बंद कर दी गई थी looks back to a completed closure before the second report. The final घट रहा है and सुरक्षित है establish a new current information state. A rule that backshifted every embedded verb would erase these changing viewpoints.
Common Mistakes
1. Backshifting a timeless fact
❌ शिक्षक ने बताया कि पृथ्वी सूर्य की परिक्रमा करती थी।
Incorrect for a timeless fact — करती थी turns it into a past habitual situation.
✅ शिक्षक ने बताया कि पृथ्वी सूर्य की परिक्रमा करती है।
śikṣak ne batāyā ki prithvī sūrya kī parikramā kartī hai.
The teacher explained that Earth revolves around the Sun.
2. Keeping present tense for a past-only state
❌ माया ने बताया कि वह उस समय कार्यालय में है, लेकिन अब घर पर है।
Incorrect — उस समय and the contrast with अब locate the first state in the past.
✅ माया ने बताया कि वह उस समय कार्यालय में थी, लेकिन अब घर पर है।
māyā ne batāyā ki vah us samay kāryālay meṃ thī, lekin ab ghar par hai.
Maya said that she was at the office then, but she is at home now.
3. Turning reported future into probability
❌ अजय ने कहा कि वह अगले दिन आता होगा।
Incorrect for a firm reported plan — आता होगा means roughly 'he probably comes/will be coming.'
✅ अजय ने कहा कि वह अगले दिन आएगा।
ajay ne kahā ki vah agle din āegā.
Ajay said that he would come the next day.
4. Losing ergativity inside the embedded clause
❌ उसने बताया कि कविता पत्र लिख दिया था।
Incorrect — perfective transitive लिख दिया requires कविता ने.
✅ उसने बताया कि कविता ने पत्र लिख दिया था।
usne batāyā ki kavitā ne patr likh diyā thā.
He said that Kavita had written the letter.
5. Using the progressive for a stable habit
❌ रोहन ने बताया कि उसकी बहन जयपुर में रह रही है और रोज़ कॉलेज जाती है।
Incorrect for the intended permanent residence — रह रही है presents the residence as temporary or currently unfolding.
✅ रोहन ने बताया कि उसकी बहन जयपुर में रहती है और रोज़ कॉलेज जाती है।
rohan ne batāyā ki uskī bahan jaypur meṃ rahtī hai aur roz kolej jātī hai.
Rohan said that his sister lives in Jaipur and goes to college every day.
Key Takeaways
- A past matrix verb does not trigger automatic backshift inside a कि clause.
- Present marks continuing or currently endorsed content; past confines a state to a past frame; future can remain future relative to an earlier report.
- Perfective aspect supplies completion, while auxiliaries locate that completed situation relative to a reference point.
- Assertions favor indicative TAM; desired, commanded, or recommended outcomes can select the subjunctive.
- Agreement and ergativity are calculated independently inside the matrix and embedded clauses.
