Reported speech without backshift

Hindi reported speech does not require the automatic tense backshift familiar from formal English exercises. After past कहा, बताया, or पूछा, an embedded present may remain present and an embedded future may remain future. The reported clause preserves how the situation was viewed unless the current speaker has a reason to relocate or reinterpret it.

“No obligatory backshift” is not the same as “never use past tense.” Hindi speakers still distinguish a state reported as present, a state deliberately confined to the past, a completed earlier event, and a future plan. Aspect and temporal perspective determine the choice; the tense of the reporting verb alone does not.

From direct quotation to indirect report

Compare a direct utterance with a natural indirect version:

रीमा ने कहा, “मैं अभी निकल रही हूँ।”

rīmā ne kahā, “maĩ abhī nikal rahī hū̃.”

Reema said, 'I am leaving now.'

रीमा ने कहा कि वह उसी समय निकल रही है।

rīmā ne kahā ki vah usī samay nikal rahī hai.

Reema said that she was leaving at that very moment.

The indirect report changes first-person मैं to वह and adjusts deictic अभी to उसी समय because the narrator is speaking from a later vantage point. It does not mechanically replace present progressive निकल रही हूँ with past progressive. Embedded निकल रही है preserves the reported ongoing viewpoint; English conventionally translates it with was leaving.

Hindi can also retain a deictic word if the narrator shares the original reference point. A person relaying Reema's message immediately might say:

रीमा ने कहा है कि वह अभी निकल रही है।

rīmā ne kahā hai ki vah abhī nikal rahī hai.

Reema has said that she is leaving now.

Here both the present-perfect report कहा है and अभी connect the message to the current moment. Pronoun and place-word choices have their own logic, explained under pronouns in reported speech; they should not be confused with tense backshift.

💡
When turning a quotation into a report, preserve the embedded aspect first: ongoing stays progressive, a habit stays imperfective, and a completed event stays perfective. Then decide whether its temporal anchor or deictic words need to move.

Present after a past reporting verb

An unbackshifted present can reproduce the original speaker's present viewpoint, present a proposition as still relevant, or express a general truth.

आरव ने बताया कि उसकी माँ अस्पताल में काम करती हैं।

ārav ne batāyā ki uskī mā̃ aspatāl meṃ kām kartī haiṃ.

Aarav said that his mother works at a hospital.

Honorific plural करती हैं presents a stable occupation. Past बताया gives no reason to turn the occupation into a former one.

शोधकर्ताओं ने बताया कि यह पदार्थ बहुत कम तापमान पर भी पिघलता है।

śodhkartāoṃ ne batāyā ki yah padārth bahut kam tāpmān par bhī pighaltā hai.

The researchers reported that this substance melts even at a very low temperature.

This (academic) reporting pattern keeps the generic imperfective पिघलता है because the claim is presented as generally valid. A past habitual would imply that the property held only formerly.

Present after past reporting does not prove that the narrator endorses the claim. Attribution can distance the narrator:

कंपनी ने दावा किया कि उसकी नई प्रणाली पूरी तरह सुरक्षित है।

kampanī ne dāvā kiyā ki uskī naī praṇālī pūrī tarah surakṣit hai.

The company claimed that its new system is completely secure.

दावा किया marks the statement as the company's claim. Embedded है preserves its present form but does not certify its truth. Context or an explicit contrast can reject it.

When past marking changes the meaning

Compare another minimal pair:

सोनिया ने कहा कि पुस्तकालय खुला है।

soniyā ne kahā ki pustakālay khulā hai.

Sonia said that the library is open.

सोनिया ने कहा कि पुस्तकालय खुला था।

soniyā ne kahā ki pustakālay khulā thā.

Sonia said that the library was open.

The first preserves a present-state report and is compatible with the library still being open. The second explicitly places the open state in a past frame; perhaps the narrator is discussing yesterday's access. Neither form is a stylistic substitute for the other.

A completed event earlier than the report can take a past perfect:

सोनिया ने बाद में बताया कि पुस्तकालय पाँच बजे ही बंद हो गया था।

soniyā ne bād meṃ batāyā ki pustakālay pā̃c baje hī band ho gayā thā.

Sonia later said that the library had closed at five itself.

Perfective बंद हो गया presents the closing as bounded and complete; था locates it before Sonia's later report. The past auxiliary appears because the timeline calls for it, not because बताया triggers a formal concord rule.

💡
No-backshift preserves a reported viewpoint; it does not freeze every verb form. Use था/थी/थे when you intend a past boundary or an earlier-than-past relation, not merely because the reporting verb happens to be past.

Reported future remains future

Hindi frequently retains future morphology for an event that was later than the original act of speaking:

संपादक ने कहा कि लेख अगले दिन छपेगा।

sampādak ne kahā ki lekh agle din chapegā.

The editor said that the article would be published the next day.

English would be published is a backshifted future. Hindi छपेगा is an ordinary future form, interpreted from the earlier plan. It does not matter that the narrator may now be speaking after the scheduled publication date.

The narrator can preserve the forecast and then state what actually happened:

मौसम विभाग ने कहा था कि शाम को बारिश होगी, लेकिन रात तक आसमान साफ़ रहा।

mausam vibhāg ne kahā thā ki śām ko bāriś hogī, lekin rāt tak āsmān sāf rahā.

The weather department had said that it would rain in the evening, but the sky remained clear until night.

Future होगी belongs to the earlier forecast; perfective रहा gives the narrator's later factual outcome. Replacing होगी with होती would change a forecast into a remote or counterfactual presentation, while होती होगी would introduce probability rather than ordinary reported future.

Reported completion and current relevance

Present perfect can remain in a report when the speaker preserves a newly achieved result or treats it as relevant to the current information state:

किरण ने कहा कि उसने चाबी मेज़ पर रख दी है।

kiraṇ ne kahā ki usne cābī mez par rakh dī hai.

Kiran said that she had put the key on the table.

English naturally uses had put after said. Hindi रख दी है preserves the result “the key is now on the table.” Perfective रख दी agrees with feminine unmarked चाबी; embedded उसने remains required because the verb is perfective and transitive.

If the key was later moved and the narrator wants only the earlier configuration, past perfect is clearer:

किरण ने कहा कि उसने चाबी मेज़ पर रख दी थी, पर बाद में निखिल उसे ले गया।

kiraṇ ne kahā ki usne cābī mez par rakh dī thī, par bād meṃ nikhil use le gayā.

Kiran said that she had put the key on the table, but Nikhil later took it away.

Here रख दी थी closes the result inside the past, and the later perfective ले गया supersedes it. The contrast is about result-state relevance, not mandatory sequence of tense.

Register and reporting stance

Everyday speech readily uses कहा कि and बताया कि. Formal and academic prose often chooses a reporting verb that makes evidential stance explicit:

  • (formal) पुष्टि की कि “confirmed that” presents the source as verifying the claim;
  • (formal) दावा किया कि “claimed that” withholds the narrator's endorsement;
  • (academic) निष्कर्ष निकाला कि “concluded that” links the proposition to an analysis;
  • (formal) घोषणा की कि “announced that” frames it as an official statement.

These verbs shape how the report is evaluated, but they do not impose a special backshift paradigm.

समिति ने निष्कर्ष निकाला कि मौजूदा व्यवस्था अपेक्षित परिणाम नहीं दे रही है।

samiti ne niṣkarṣ nikālā ki maujūdā vyavasthā apekṣit pariṇām nahīṃ de rahī hai.

The committee concluded that the existing system was not producing the expected results.

The (academic) progressive नहीं दे रही है profiles an ongoing failure within the committee's assessment. English backshifts it to was not producing; Hindi need not.

A developing news report

सुबह नियंत्रण कक्ष ने बताया कि उड़ान समय पर है। थोड़ी देर बाद विमान कंपनी ने कहा कि तकनीकी जाँच चल रही है और उड़ान देर से रवाना होगी। रात में उसने पुष्टि की कि उड़ान रद्द कर दी गई है। अगले दिन अख़बार ने लिखा कि यात्रियों को कई घंटे इंतज़ार करना पड़ा था।

subah niyantraṇ kakṣ ne batāyā ki uṛān samay par hai. thoṛī der bād vimān kampanī ne kahā ki taknīkī jā̃c cal rahī hai aur uṛān der se ravānā hogī. rāt meṃ usne puṣṭi kī ki uṛān radd kar dī gaī hai. agle din axbār ne likhā ki yātriyoṃ ko kaī ghaṇṭe intazār karnā paṛā thā.

In the morning, the control room reported that the flight was on time. A little later, the airline said that a technical inspection was under way and that the flight would depart late. At night it confirmed that the flight had been cancelled. The next day, the newspaper wrote that the passengers had had to wait for several hours.

The reports retain distinct viewpoints: stative है, ongoing चल रही है, forecast होगी, current-result passive कर दी गई है, and past completed necessity करना पड़ा था. The narration does not force them into one uniform tense. Each source contributes a new temporal center and a new information state.

💡
In a chain of reports, preserve who knew what and when. A retained future can display an earlier prediction even after its deadline, while a later perfective clause records the actual outcome. This contrast is often more informative than harmonizing every verb into the narrator's past.

Common Mistakes

1. Automatically backshifting a continuing fact

❌ देव ने बताया कि उसकी दुकान मुख्य बाज़ार में थी।

Incorrect if Dev's shop is still there — थी presents the location as past-only.

✅ देव ने बताया कि उसकी दुकान मुख्य बाज़ार में है।

dev ne batāyā ki uskī dukān mukhya bāzār meṃ hai.

Dev said that his shop is in the main market.

2. Replacing reported future with remote imperfective

❌ प्रिया ने कहा कि वह अगले हफ़्ते दिल्ली जाती।

Incorrect for a straightforward plan — जाती makes the trip remote or conditional.

✅ प्रिया ने कहा कि वह अगले हफ़्ते दिल्ली जाएगी।

priyā ne kahā ki vah agle hafte dillī jāegī.

Priya said that she would go to Delhi the following week.

3. Refusing past marking when the state is explicitly over

❌ समीर ने कहा कि वह उस समय अकेला है, पर अब उसके दोस्त आ गए हैं।

Incorrect — उस समय and अब contrast an ended past state with the present.

✅ समीर ने कहा कि वह उस समय अकेला था, पर अब उसके दोस्त आ गए हैं।

samīr ne kahā ki vah us samay akelā thā, par ab uske dost ā gae haiṃ.

Sameer said that he was alone then, but now his friends have arrived.

4. Changing an ongoing report into a habit

❌ लीना ने कहा कि वह उस समय खाना बनाती है।

Incorrect for an action under way at that moment — बनाती है describes a habit.

✅ लीना ने कहा कि वह उस समय खाना बना रही है।

līnā ne kahā ki vah us samay khānā banā rahī hai.

Leena said that she was cooking at that time.

5. Dropping embedded perfective ergativity

❌ रोहित ने बताया कि उसकी बहन आवेदन भेज दिया है।

Incorrect — the embedded perfective transitive verb requires उसकी बहन ने.

✅ रोहित ने बताया कि उसकी बहन ने आवेदन भेज दिया है।

rohit ne batāyā ki uskī bahan ne āvedan bhej diyā hai.

Rohit said that his sister has sent the application.

Key Takeaways

  • Hindi has no obligatory English-style backshift after a past reporting verb.
  • Retained present, present perfect, and future forms preserve the reported viewpoint; English translations often use past or would.
  • Past marking remains necessary when the narrator deliberately confines a state or result to an earlier frame.
  • Aspect must survive reporting: ongoing, habitual, completed, and resultant readings are not interchangeable.
  • Pronouns and deictic expressions may shift even when the tense does not, and normal agreement and ergativity continue inside the reported clause.
