Contemplated reciprocal verbs retain mag-, reduplicate the root's initial consonant–vowel material, and keep the reciprocal suffix: magsulatan → magsusulatan, magtulungan → magtutulungan. They present mutual, joint, competitive, or distributed action as projected, intended, or dependent on a condition.
This is contemplated aspect, not an English future-tense ending. The form also appears in predictions viewed from the past, hypothetical clauses, and questions about planned interaction. Its plural or coordinated participant set remains the actor-voice pivot. All unlabelled examples are neutral contemporary Filipino.
Forming the Contemplated Member
| Basic | Contemplated | Repeated material | Projected meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| magsulatan | magsusulatan | su- | will write to one another |
| magtulungan | magtutulungan | tu- | will help one another |
| magtawagan | magtatawagan | ta- | will call one another |
| magsabihan | magsasabihan | sa- | will tell or remind one another |
| magkuwentuhan | magkukuwentuhan | ku- | will chat or exchange stories |
| magbanggaan | magbabanggaan | ba- | will collide with one another |
| mag-agawan | mag-aagawan | a- | will struggle over something |
For consonant-initial roots, write the form solid. With vowel-initial agaw, retain the affix boundary: mag-aagawan. Surface suffixes belong to established lexical families: sabihan and kuwentuhan contain -han, while sulatan contains -an.
Magsusulatan sina Nida at Ester habang nasa ibang bansa si Ester.
Nida and Ester will write to each other while Ester is abroad.
The two groups will work together to clean the river on Saturday.
The first predicts a symmetric correspondence. The second predicts joint cooperation; it need not mean that every member individually helps every other member.
Prediction Versus a Basic Directive
The basic form commonly appears in invitations and commands. The contemplated form predicts or plans the event.
Magtulungan kayo sa pagliligpit ng mga upuan.
Help one another put away the chairs.
You will work together to put away the chairs after the program.
Only root reduplication separates the two forms, but the speech acts differ. The first directs the group; the second describes a projected arrangement.
Negative commands use huwag plus a basic form:
Huwag kayong magsisihan kapag may nagkamali sa talaan.
Don't blame one another if someone makes a mistake in the records.
Magsisihan here is basic mag- + sisi + -han. Contemplated “will blame one another” is magsisisihan, with an additional reduplicated si-. English spelling gives no clue to this contrast.
Future, Conditional, and Prospective Readings
The teachers will exchange suggestions before they finalize the plan.
The exchanged material takes ng, while ang mga guro contains all exchangers.
If we call one another every evening, we will quickly learn about any change.
Inclusive tayo includes the addressee in the projected calling group. The conditional kung prevents the sentence from asserting that the calls are certain.
We thought the two candidates would greet each other after the debate.
English uses would because the projection is viewed from a past point. Filipino retains contemplated magbabatian; inakala namin supplies the earlier viewpoint.
The broader distinction between projected aspect and calendar futurity is explained on contemplated aspect and future time.
Questions, Negation, and a Short Exchange
Magsasabihan ba kayo agad kapag may problema sa iskedyul?
Will you tell one another right away if there is a problem with the schedule?
The question asks about a planned reciprocal information flow, not one completed notification.
The participants will not compete for places because each person has an assigned seat.
Contemplated mag-aagawan retains the hyphen and the reduplicated initial vowel. The competitive complement uses sa puwesto.
—Will we call one another when you arrive in Baguio? —Yes, so we know where to pick you up.
The question uses inclusive tayo. In the answer, exclusive namin refers to the people arranging the pickup, while kayo refers to the arriving group.
Lexical Limits and Alternative Frames
Not every English future reciprocal needs mag-...-an. Established plain mag- or magka- verbs include mag-uusap “will talk,” magkikita “will meet,” and magtatalo “will argue.” Adding -an simply because English uses each other can be unnatural or can create a different lexical meaning.
Makipag- changes the participant packaging. Makikipagsulatan si Inez kay Berto singles out Inez as the actor pivot and Berto as the counterpart; magsusulatan sina Inez at Berto treats the pair symmetrically. Simple maki- instead usually presents an actor joining another party's activity.
Some contemplated mag-...-an forms predict distributed rather than pairwise action. Magtatakbuhan ang mga bata can mean that the children will run about or scatter. The aspect is predictable, but the lexical relation is not.
Common Mistakes
Using the basic form for a plain prediction
❌ Magsulatan sina Neri at Paul sa susunod na semestre.
Aspect mismatch for the intended prediction — basic magsulatan is natural as a directive or complement, not as this plain projected assertion.
✅ Magsusulatan sina Neri at Paul sa susunod na semestre.
Neri and Paul will write to each other next semester.
Keeping completed nag- in a future plan
Wrong aspect for the intended plan — nagtulungan presents the cooperation as completed.
The staff members will work together tomorrow to move the tables.
Omitting the hyphen in a vowel-initial form
❌ Magaagawan sa huling tiket ang magkakaibigan.
Incorrect standard spelling — contemplated mag-aagawan retains the affix boundary.
The friends will compete for the last ticket if they do not reserve.
Attaching an English future marker
❌ Magtatawagan-will ang mga kapatid paglapag ng eroplano.
Incorrect — contemplated magtatawagan already presents the calls as projected.
✅ Magtatawagan ang mga kapatid paglapag ng eroplano.
The siblings will call one another when the plane lands.
Key Takeaways
- Form the contemplated member with mag- + initial-root reduplication + root + reciprocal suffix.
- Use it for projected, intended, conditional, or future-relative reciprocal configurations.
- Basic forms are common in commands and invitations; contemplated forms make predictions or describe plans.
- The reciprocal set remains the actor pivot, while lexical frames determine themes and competitive complements.
- Choose an established family: some mutual events use plain mag-, magka-, makipag-, or another construction instead.
