Completed reciprocal nag-...-an presents a mutual, joint, competitive, or distributed event as a bounded whole. Nagsulatan sila reports a completed correspondence or exchange of messages; nagyakapan sila reports that the participants embraced one another. The form often refers to past time, but the morphology marks completed aspect rather than English tense.
The construction remains actor voice. Its plural or coordinated pivot contains the participants in the reciprocal configuration, while additional themes, topics, and settings receive the markers licensed by the lexical verb. All unlabelled examples are neutral contemporary Filipino.
Forming Completed nag-...-an
Replace basic mag- with nag-, keep the reciprocal suffix, and do not reduplicate the root.

The surface stems show real morphophonemic and lexical differences. Tulong → tulungan alternates o/u before the suffix. Vowel-final biro gives biruan, but sabi gives established sabihan and kuwento gives kuwentuhan. Memorize the attested family instead of appending one suffix mechanically.
Nagbiruan ang magkakaibigan habang hinihintay ang huling biyahe.
The friends joked with one another while waiting for the last trip.
Nagkuwentuhan sina Aling Cora at Tiya Belen hanggang magsara ang panaderya.
Aling Cora and Aunt Belen chatted until the bakery closed.
These events are viewed as bounded wholes even though each may contain many individual remarks.
Completed Reciprocity Versus an Ongoing Relation
Compare the same root sulat:
Nagsulatan sina Omar at Celso noong nasa barko pa si Celso.
Omar and Celso corresponded while Celso was still aboard the ship.
Nagsusulatan sina Omar at Celso tuwing may bagong balita sa pamilya.
Omar and Celso write to each other whenever there is family news.
Nagsulatan treats the correspondence period as a closed whole. Nagsusulatan presents it as a recurring, open pattern. The English simple past or simple present is only a translation consequence; Filipino chooses viewpoint first.
Nagpalitan ng mga lumang retrato ang magpinsan bago sila umuwi.
The cousins exchanged old photographs before they went home.
Here the items transferred take ng, while ang magpinsan is the reciprocal actor pivot. The reciprocal participants can exchange several items without those items becoming part of the pivot.
Completion Does Not Always Mean Past Time
Nagbatian na ang lahat, kaya maaari na nating simulan ang pagpupulong.
Everyone has greeted one another now, so we can begin the meeting.
Particle na makes the new resulting state relevant to the present. It does not create completed aspect; nagbatian already supplies that viewpoint.
Kapag nagtulungan na kayo sa pagsasaayos bukas, saka natin bubuksan ang bulwagan.
Once you have worked together on the arrangements tomorrow, we will open the hall.
Although the cooperation is located tomorrow, nagtulungan is completed relative to the later opening. Calling nag-...-an a past-tense circumfix would fail to explain this use. The broader principle appears under completed aspect.
Negation and Questions
Hindi nagbatian sina Ruben at Marco matapos ang pagdinig.
Ruben and Marco did not greet each other after the hearing.
The negative denies that the reciprocal greeting occurred. It does not necessarily claim that neither man greeted anyone else.
Nagpalitan ba ng mga kopya ang dalawang pangkat bago ang presentasyon?
Did the two groups exchange copies before the presentation?
The item exchanged takes ng, and the two groups form the actor pivot. Question particle ba follows the predicate.
—Nagyakapan ba ang magkapatid nang magkita sila? —Oo, at pareho silang napaiyak.
—Did the siblings hug each other when they met? —Yes, and they both burst into tears.
The pair is encoded by ang magkapatid; English needs each other, but Filipino does not need isa't isa here because nag-...-an and the plural pivot already establish reciprocity.
Voice and Lexical Limits Remain Active
Physical reciprocal events can have inanimate pivots:
Nagbanggaan ang dalawang kariton sa makitid na pasukan.
The two carts collided in the narrow entrance.
Social roots such as bati, biro, and sabi normally require sentient participants. Bangga licenses inanimate symmetric participants because collision does not require intention.
Not every root uses mag-...-an for reciprocal meaning. Mag-usap, magkita, and magtalo are already conventionally reciprocal or joint in common uses. Conversely, some mag-...-an forms have specialized meanings: nagtakbuhan usually means that several participants ran about or scattered, not that they acted on one another.
A root is a construction family. Tulong includes actor tumulong, patient tinulungan, reciprocal nagtulungan, and social-reciprocal nakipagtulungan. Completed morphology cannot predict those voice and valency differences by itself.
Common Mistakes
Keeping basic mag- in a completed report
❌ Magpalitan ng regalo ang magkaklase kahapon.
Wrong aspect for the intended completed report — magpalitan is basic, not completed.
✅ Nagpalitan ng munting regalo ang magkaklase kahapon.
The classmates exchanged small gifts yesterday.
Adding reduplication to one bounded exchange
❌ Nagtatawagan sina Mico at Jun isang beses lang kagabi.
Meaning mismatch — nagtatawagan presents an ongoing or recurring pattern, not one bounded call exchange.
✅ Nagtawagan sina Mico at Jun isang beses lang kagabi.
Mico and Jun called each other once last night.
Dropping the reciprocal suffix
❌ Nagbigay sina Dina at Lorna ng kuwintas bago umalis.
Meaning mismatch — nagbigay says that both gave necklaces, but it does not identify a mutual exchange.
✅ Nagbigayan ng kuwintas sina Dina at Lorna bago umalis.
Dina and Lorna gave each other necklaces before leaving.
Adding an English past ending
❌ Nagtulungan-ed ang mga boluntaryo sa pagkukumpuni ng bubong.
Incorrect — nagtulungan already marks completed aspect.
✅ Nagtulungan ang mga boluntaryo sa pagkukumpuni ng bubong.
The volunteers worked together to repair the roof.
