Completed makipag- replaces initial m with n: makipag-usap β nakipag-usap, makipaglaro β nakipaglaro, makipagtulungan β nakipagtulungan. The interaction is viewed as bounded or realized, while the profiled participant remains the actor pivot and the counterpart normally remains in a sa-form.

Formation and Spelling
| Root or base | Basic | Completed | Common meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| usap | makipag-usap | nakipag-usap | talked with |
| laro | makipaglaro | nakipaglaro | played with |
| talo | makipagtalo | nakipagtalo | argued with |
| tulungan | makipagtulungan | nakipagtulungan | cooperated with |
| ugnayan | makipag-ugnayan | nakipag-ugnayan | coordinated with (formal) |
There is no aspectual reduplication in the completed form. Before a vowel-initial base, the hyphen remains: nakipag-usap, nakipag-ugnayan. Before a consonant-initial base, the form is normally solid: nakipaglaro, nakipagtalo.
Nakipag-usap ako sa guro pagkatapos ng klase.
I spoke with the teacher after class.
Nakipagtulungan ang mga mangingisda sa mga siyentista upang bantayan ang bahura.
The fishers cooperated with the scientists to monitor the reef.
Completion Is Not Past Tense
Completed aspect presents the interaction as a whole. A past-time word frequently accompanies it, but the same form can be completed relative to a future event.
Nakipagpalitan ng binhi si Mang Dado sa magsasaka mula sa kabilang baryo noong anihan.
Mang Dado exchanged seeds with a farmer from the neighboring village during the harvest.
Kapag nakipag-usap na kayo sa may-ari, ipadala ninyo sa akin ang kasunduan.
Once you have spoken with the owner, send me the agreement.
In the second example, the conversation has not occurred at speaking time. Nakipag-usap is nevertheless completed relative to the future sending. English tense labels cannot describe that relationship cleanly; the completed-aspect page treats this event-based viewpoint in depth.
Keep the Participant Frame Intact
Nakipagkita si Aira kay Mang Ruel sa munisipyo.
Aira met with Mang Ruel at the municipal hall.
Si Aira is the actor pivot, kay Mang Ruel is the personal counterpart, and sa munisipyo is the location. The two sa-type roles are distinguished by lexical content and personal marking, not by English word order.
With a group counterpart, use sa:
Nakipagpulong ang punong-guro sa mga magulang tungkol sa bagong patakaran.
The principal met with the parents about the new policy.
Makipagpulong is common in institutional contexts and has a (formal) flavor. In everyday conversation, makipag-usap may be more natural when no organized meeting is intended.
Completed versus Incompleted Interaction
Nakipagtalo si Rafi sa kapatid niya tungkol sa mana kagabi.
Rafi argued with his sibling about the inheritance last night.
Nakikipagtalo si Rafi sa kapatid niya tuwing pinag-uusapan ang mana.
Rafi argues with his sibling whenever the inheritance is discussed.
The first packages one argument as bounded; the second describes recurring conduct. The actor pivot and counterpart remain aligned in both.
For a completed conversation, nakipag-usap differs from reciprocal nag-usap in how it organizes the parties:
Nakipag-usap si Nica kay Paolo bago ang pagtatanghal.
Nica talked with Paolo before the performance.
Nag-usap sina Nica at Paolo bago ang pagtatanghal.
Nica and Paolo talked with each other before the performance.
The first profiles Nica's engagement; the second packages Nica and Paolo as the plural personal pivot sina Nica at Paolo. Both are actor-oriented, but their valency differs.
Negation and Questions
Negation does not return the verb to its basic form. If one bounded interaction is denied, completed nakipag- remains appropriate.
Hindi nakipagsagutan si Lorna sa kostumer kahit paulit-ulit siyang sinigawan.
Lorna did not trade angry words with the customer even though the customer repeatedly shouted at her.
βNakipag-ayos ba si Noel sa kapitbahay? βOo, humingi rin siya ng paumanhin.
βDid Noel make peace with the neighbor? βYes, he also apologized.
Nakipag-ayos is lexical: depending on context, it can mean negotiate, settle matters, or reconcile. The reply here establishes the reconciliation reading.
Lexical Families and Register
Regular completed morphology applies only after a verb is known to belong to this family. Established forms include nakipag-away, nakipagtalo, nakipagkasundo, nakipagpalitan, and nakipag-ugnayan. Their meanings are not produced by one invariant βreciprocalβ formula.
Nakipagkasundo ang samahan sa may-ari ng lupa matapos ang mahabang pag-uusap.
The association reached an agreement with the landowner after a long discussion.
Nakipagkasundo reports agreement, not merely participation in an action called kasundo. Nakipag-ugnayan is frequent in (formal) administrative reports; nakipagkuwentuhan is common in (informal) conversation and foregrounds relaxed chatting. Learn the register with the whole verb.
Common Mistakes
β Namakipag-usap si Emy sa nars kaninang umaga.
Incorrect β completed makipag- replaces initial m with n; it does not add na- to the basic form.
β Nakipag-usap si Emy sa nars kaninang umaga.
Emy spoke with the nurse this morning.
β Nakikipaglaro si Pio sa pinsan niya kahapon nang isang beses.
Wrong for one bounded event β nakikipaglaro is incompleted.
β Nakipaglaro si Pio sa pinsan niya kahapon pagkatapos ng hapunan.
Pio played with his cousin yesterday after dinner.
β Nakipagtalo-ed ang dalawang kandidato sa entablado.
Incorrect β Filipino completed aspect never takes English -ed.
β Nakipagtalo ang dalawang kandidato sa entablado tungkol sa badyet.
The two candidates argued onstage about the budget.
β Nakipagpulong si Ginoong Cruz ang mga kawani.
Incorrect β the counterpart needs a sa-form, not pivot marker ang.
β Nakipagpulong si Ginoong Cruz sa mga kawani bago magtanghali.
Mr. Cruz met with the staff before noon. (formal workplace use)
