Contemplated makipag- has the form makikipag-: makikipag-usap, makikipaglaro, makikipagtalo, makikipagtulungan. It presents reciprocal participation as intended, expected, conditional, or otherwise not yet begun. Future time is frequent, but the form is aspectual rather than an English-style future tense.
All unlabelled uses are neutral contemporary Filipino.
Formation
| Base | Basic | Contemplated | Structure |
|---|---|---|---|
| usap | makipag-usap | makikipag-usap | ma + ki + ki + pag-usap |
| laro | makipaglaro | makikipaglaro | ma + ki + ki + paglaro |
| talo | makipagtalo | makikipagtalo | ma + ki + ki + pagtalo |
| palitan | makipagpalitan | makikipagpalitan | ma + ki + ki + pagpalitan |
| ugnayan | makipag-ugnayan | makikipag-ugnayan | ma + ki + ki + pag-ugnayan |
The aspectual copy is ki within the prefixal complex. The root is not reduplicated. The hyphen remains before vowel-initial usap and ugnayan, while consonant-initial forms are solid.
Makikipag-usap ako sa tagapayo bukas ng umaga.
I will talk with the adviser tomorrow morning.
The two barangays will cooperate in cleaning the river.
Not Yet Begun, Not Necessarily Future from Now
A future plan is the clearest use:
Makikipagkita si Nori kay Tita Belen sa istasyon mamayang gabi.
Nori will meet with Aunt Belen at the station this evening.
The same morphology can appear inside a past expectation:
Akala namin ay makikipagpulong ang direktor sa mga kawani, pero ipinagpaliban ang pulong.
We thought the director would meet with the staff, but the meeting was postponed. (formal workplace context)
The planned meeting was not yet begun relative to the earlier expectation. This shows why makikipagpulong is not simply βfuture tense.β See contemplated aspect and future time.
Conditions, Intentions, and Basic Complements
If both sides agree, they will negotiate a settlement before the week ends.
The condition makes the event contingent. The contemplated form presents the possible negotiation as not yet begun.
After a matrix predicate such as gusto, the basic form commonly appears as a complement:
Gusto ni Corang makipag-usap sa may-ari tungkol sa tagas sa bubong.
Cora wants to talk with the owner about the leak in the roof.
Basic makipag-usap depends on gusto; contemplated makikipag-usap is not automatically required just because the wanted event lies later in time. Likewise, directives use the basic form:
Makipag-usap ka muna sa kapatid mo bago ka magpasya.
Talk with your sibling first before you decide.
Keep Voice and Valency Stable
Lira will exchange seedlings with Aling Marta on Saturday.
Si Lira is the actor pivot. Kay Aling Marta is the co-participant, and ng mga punla is the theme of exchange. The reciprocal semantics do not give both people pivot marking.
Now compare the plural reciprocal frame:
Magpapalitan ng mga punla sina Lira at Aling Marta sa Sabado.
Lira and Aling Marta will exchange seedlings with each other on Saturday.
Magpapalitan sina Lira at Aling Marta packages both exchange partners together. The derivations are related but not freely interchangeable in discourse.
Simple Maki- versus Makipag-
Ruel will join his association's contest.
Ruel will compete with Dante in the final round.
Simple makiki- presents entry into an event; makikipag- presents a counterpart-centered interaction. English participate and compete hint at the difference, but Filipino derivation and participant marking make it explicit.
Negation and a Short Exchange
Amina will not argue with the chair while they are meeting.
The negative denies a contemplated confrontation. To prohibit one, Filipino normally uses huwag plus the basic form:
Huwag kang makipagtalo sa tagapangulo habang nagsasalita siya.
Do not argue with the chair while the chair is speaking.
βMakikipag-ugnayan ba kayo sa tanggapan ng gobernador? βOo, tatawag kami sa kanila sa Lunes.
βWill you coordinate with the governor's office? βYes, we will call them on Monday. (formal administrative context)
Ba follows the first predicate word. The reply's exclusive kami excludes the questioner.
Lexical and Register Restrictions
Contemplated formation is predictable only for established families. Makikipag-usap, makikipaglaro, makikipagtulungan, and makikipagpalitan are ordinary. Makikipag-ugnayan is especially common in (formal) organizational communication. Makikipagkuwentuhan is more at home in (informal) relaxed interaction.
Do not attach makikipag- to every English verb followed by with. English eat with the neighbors normally calls for makikisalo or a plain eating construction, not invented makikipagkain. Root choice remains lexical even when aspect formation is regular.
Common Mistakes
Wrong for the intended directly scheduled event β the basic form does not itself present the meeting as contemplated.
β Makikipag-usap kami sa tagapamahala bukas tungkol sa bagong iskedyul.
We will talk with the manager tomorrow about the new schedule.
β Makikipaglaro-ed si Odie kay Max sa Sabado.
Incorrect β English -ed cannot attach to Filipino contemplated morphology.
Odie will play with Max on Saturday after practice.
Incorrect β Coring is the counterpart and requires kay.
Sabel will argue with Coring about the fence if they cannot agree.
β Huwag kang makikipag-away sa kapatid mo.
Nonstandard for a direct prohibition β huwag normally selects the basic verb form.
β Huwag kang makipag-away sa kapatid mo dahil sa laruan.
Do not fight with your sibling over the toy.
