The maki- social participation: Contemplated-Aspect Formation

Contemplated social-participation verbs use makiki-: makisali β†’ makikisali, makisabay β†’ makikisabay, and makiramay β†’ makikiramay. They present joining, sharing, accompanying, or requesting access as intended or not yet begun. English often uses will, be going to, or would like to, but makiki- marks contemplated aspect, not a grammatical future tense.

All unlabelled examples are neutral contemporary Filipino. Some contemplated maki- forms have conventional polite-request uses in conversation; those are marked (polite), not treated as a separate tense.

The Makiki- Pattern

The contemplated form retains initial ma- and reduplicates ki: ma-ki-ki-ROOT. It contrasts with completed naki- and incompleted nakiki-.

BasicContemplatedSegmentationTypical interpretation
makisalimakikisalima-ki-ki-saliwill join / intends to join
makisabaymakikisabayma-ki-ki-sabaywill ride or go along
makibahagimakikibahagima-ki-ki-bahagiwill take part
makitulogmakikitulogma-ki-ki-tulogwill stay overnight as someone's guest
makikainmakikikainma-ki-ki-kainwill eat as a guest / join a meal

Makikisali si Gwen sa pagsasanay bukas kung may bakanteng puwesto.

Gwen will join the training tomorrow if there is an open slot. (neutral)

Makikisabay kami kay Lito hanggang sa munisipyo.

We'll ride along with Lito as far as the municipal hall. (neutral)

Makikikain ang mga pinsan ko sa amin pagkatapos ng prusisyon.

My cousins will eat at our place after the procession. (informal family context)

The contemplated event may be a plan, prediction, conditional intention, or socially negotiated arrangement. The temporal expressions help choose the English translation, but they do not alter the Filipino aspect pattern.

πŸ’‘
Form contemplated maki- by copying ki, not the root's first syllable. This yields makikisali and the correct, visually dense makikikain.

Plans, Conditions, and Commitments

Contemplated aspect is compatible with a future date, a condition, or a promise because the participation has not begun at the relevant viewpoint.

Makikilahok ang aming paaralan sa paligsahan sa Oktubre.

Our school will take part in the contest in October. (formal-neutral)

Kung papayag ang may-ari, makikitira muna si Dax sa kaniyang tiyahin.

If the owner agrees, Dax will stay with his aunt for the time being. (neutral)

Makikiisa ang samahan sa paglilinis ng baybayin sa Linggo.

The association will join the coastal cleanup on Sunday. (formal public statement)

An institution can be the actor pivot because it stands for its members acting collectively. The social participant is therefore typically animate or institutionally personified; an ordinary inanimate object cannot intentionally join an activity.

Same Root, Different Aspect

Nakisabay si Mila kay Atoy kaninang umaga.

Mila rode along with Atoy earlier this morning. (completed)

Makikisabay si Mila kay Atoy bukas ng umaga.

Mila will ride along with Atoy tomorrow morning. (contemplated)

Both clauses keep si Mila as actor pivot and kay Atoy as the person whose trip she joins. Only the event viewpoint changes. Nakisabay presents the ride as complete; makikisabay presents it as unrealized. The English past/future contrast is a translation consequence, not person-based conjugation.

The infinitive and contemplated forms page explains why the basic and contemplated forms sometimes resemble each other yet have distinct distributions.

Polite Requests Through Intended Participation

Several contemplated maki- forms conventionally let the speaker announce a desired participation while leaving room for the addressee's permission. With sana, lang, and po, the statement functions as a softened request. This is common (polite conversation).

Makikitawag lang po sana ako dahil ubos na ang baterya ng telepono ko.

May I please make a quick call? My phone's battery is dead. (polite)

Literally, the speaker presents an intended act of using someone else's calling facility. Pragmatically, the speaker asks permission.

Makikigamit po sana ako ng banyo kung maaari.

I'd like to use the restroom, if I may. (polite)

Makikiusap sana ako na hinaan ninyo ang radyo pagkatapos ng alas diyes.

I'd like to ask you to turn the radio down after ten o'clock. (polite)

Makikiusap is lexicalized as making an appeal or request. It must not be confused with makikipag-usap, β€œtalk with,” whose pag belongs to the reciprocal-social family.

πŸ’‘
Makiki- + sana/lang/po can soften a request because the speaker presents their own intended participation instead of issuing a direct command. Paki- is a different request construction and has its own participant structure.

Questions, Negation, and Commands

Makikibahagi ba kayo sa gastos sa pag-aayos ng bubong?

Will you contribute to the cost of repairing the roof? (neutral)

Here makibahagi has developed the context-appropriate sense β€œtake a share/contribute.” The exact contribution follows from the sa phrase and situation, not from makiki- alone.

Hindi muna kami makikisali sa proyekto hangga't hindi malinaw ang badyet.

We won't join the project for now until the budget is clear. (neutral)

The negated plan keeps contemplated makikisali. By contrast, an ordinary command uses the basic form:

Makisali ka sa amin kung tapos ka na sa gawain mo.

Join us if you have finished your work. (informal-neutral invitation)

With a prohibition, huwag also selects the basic form:

Huwag kang makialam sa desisyon nila nang walang pahintulot.

Don't interfere in their decision without permission. (neutral warning)

Using makikialam would describe or question a contemplated act; it would not be the ordinary form of a direct prohibition.

Lexical and Register Limits

The contemplated template is regular only for verbs that already belong to the maki- family. Makikiramay, makikisama, makikilahok, and makikialam retain their established meanings. Do not attach makiki- to any root merely because English can say β€œwill join in.”

Some forms also differ in social tone. Makikiisa suits neutral and (formal) solidarity statements. Makikikain and makikitulog are everyday and often (informal) because they concern hospitality. Makikialam usually anticipates meddling and can be accusatory. These are lexical-register facts, not aspectual meanings.

Common Mistakes

Reduplicating the root rather than ki-

❌ Makisisali si Poldo sa pulong mamaya.

Incorrect β€” contemplated social participation reduplicates ki-, not sa- from sali.

βœ… Makikisali si Poldo sa pulong mamaya kapag dumating ang tagapangulo.

Poldo will join the meeting later when the chair arrives. (neutral)

Confusing makikikain with ability makakain

❌ Makakain kami kina Nena sa pista.

Wrong for the intended guest-participation meaning β€” makakain normally means β€˜will be able to eat’ or β€˜can eat.’

βœ… Makikikain kami kina Nena sa pista pagkatapos ng parada.

We'll eat with Nena's household at the fiesta after the parade. (informal social context)

Using contemplated aspect as a direct command

❌ Makikisabay ka sa amin pauwi.

Incorrect as a direct invitation or instruction β€” this normally states what the addressee will do.

βœ… Makisabay ka sa amin pauwi para hindi ka na maghintay ng bus.

Ride home with us so you won't have to wait for a bus. (informal-neutral invitation)

Adding English will to the Filipino verb

❌ Will-makikilahok ang aming klase sa paligsahan.

Incorrect β€” makikilahok already supplies the contemplated Filipino form.

βœ… Makikilahok ang aming klase sa paligsahan sa pagbasa sa Nobyembre.

Our class will take part in the reading contest in November. (neutral)

Key Takeaways

Contemplated maki- has the pattern makiki- and presents social participation as intended or not yet begun. It supports plans, conditions, questions, and negated intentions. Certain speaker-oriented forms also make polite requests with sana, lang, and po. Commands use basic maki-, and every form retains the social and register restrictions of its lexical family.
