Incompleted social-participation verbs use nakiki- before the remaining base: makisali β nakikisali, makisabay β nakikisabay, and makiramay β nakikiramay. The form presents participation from inside its unfolding or as a repeated, habitual pattern. It can correspond to English is joining, was staying with, regularly rides along, or a simple present such as takes part; it is not limited to present time.
All unlabelled examples are neutral contemporary Filipino. Where a lexical item is characteristically informal, formal, or negatively evaluated, the example labels it.
Reduplicate ki-, Not the Root
The incompleted pattern combines completed-family initial na- with reduplicated ki: schematically, na-ki-ki-ROOT. Learners often look only at the dictionary root and copy its first syllable, but the relevant base here includes the social-participation element ki.
| Basic | Completed | Incompleted | Segmentation insight |
|---|---|---|---|
| makisali | nakisali | nakikisali | na-ki-ki-sali |
| makisabay | nakisabay | nakikisabay | na-ki-ki-sabay |
| makibahagi | nakibahagi | nakikibahagi | na-ki-ki-bahagi |
| makitulog | nakitulog | nakikitulog | na-ki-ki-tulog |
| makikain | nakikain | nakikikain | na-ki-ki-kain |
Nakikikain contains two consecutive ki syllables followed by the root-initial k of kain: na-ki-ki-kain. Its formation is regular within this family, and standard spelling writes the word solidly.
Nakikisali si Berto sa pagsasanay ng koro ngayong hapon.
Berto is taking part in the choir rehearsal this afternoon. (neutral)
Nakikisabay si Fe kay Lorna pauwi tuwing Biyernes.
Fe rides home with Lorna every Friday. (neutral habitual)
Nakikikain muna sa amin ang mga pamangkin ko habang inaayos ang kusina nila.
My nieces and nephews are eating at our place for now while their kitchen is being repaired. (informal family context)
The first and third examples describe current or temporary arrangements; the second is habitual. The morphology is identical because incompleted aspect covers both an unfolding event and an open recurring pattern.
nakiki- with English βis ...-ing.β Look for an event viewed from within or a participation pattern that remains open across occasions.Present, Past, and Habitual Contexts
Time comes from adverbials and surrounding clauses. Incompleted nakiki- can sit inside a past frame when another event occurred during the participation.
Nakikitulog pa si Jomar sa kaniyang tiyuhin nang nakahanap siya ng malilipatang silid.
Jomar was still staying at his uncle's place when he found a room to move into. (neutral)
Nang matagpuan niya anchors the situation in past time. Pa adds βstill,β while nakikitulog supplies the internally viewed temporary stay.
Nakikilahok ang paaralan sa programang ito taun-taon.
The school takes part in this program every year. (formal-neutral institutional context)
English prefers a simple present for the institutional habit. Filipino presents the recurring participation with incompleted morphology.
Nakikiramay kami sa inyo sa pagpanaw ni Mang Isko.
We share in your grief over Mang Isko's passing. (respectful condolence formula)
Here incompleted nakikiramay can describe a present stance of sympathy rather than a durative physical action. Aspectual viewpoint interacts with the lexical meaning of emotional alignment.
A Controlled Aspect Contrast
Nakilahok si Aira sa konsultasyon noong Martes.
Aira took part in the consultation on Tuesday. (completed)
Nakikilahok si Aira sa konsultasyon habang tinatalakay ang badyet.
Aira is taking part in the consultation while the budget is being discussed. (incompleted)
Both clauses use actor voice and mark si Aira as pivot. Completed nakilahok views her participation as a bounded whole; incompleted nakikilahok looks inside it. The distinction is aspectual, not agreement with the actor. The incompleted-aspect overview shows the same event-view contrast across other verb families.
Questions, Negation, and a Short Exchange
Nakikibahagi ba ang inyong samahan sa paghahanda ng pista?
Is your association taking part in preparing for the fiesta? (neutral)
Hindi na nakikisabay si Nilo sa amin dahil lumipat ang opisina niya.
Nilo no longer rides with us because his office moved. (neutral)
Hindi na means that the recurring arrangement has ended. The incompleted form remains appropriate because the denied claim concerns an established participation pattern.
βBakit narito pa si Cora? βNakikitulong siya sa pagbibilang ng mga kahon.
βWhy is Cora still here? βShe's helping with the counting of the boxes. (neutral conversation)
Nakikitulong presents Cora as joining other people's work. Plain tumutulong can simply describe her helping; the maki- family makes the collaborative entry into an existing activity more salient.
nakiki- verb may identify a co-participant, group, activity, or social situation. Learn the natural frame of each lexical verb instead of translating every sa as English βwith.βSocial Stance and Lexicalization
Incompleted morphology does not neutralize a verb's conventional stance. Nakikialam normally means βis meddling/interfering,β often expressing disapproval. Nakikisama can describe ongoing cooperation or accommodation. Nakikiisa is common in organized statements of solidarity and may sound (formal) in institutional announcements.
Palaging nakikialam ang kapitbahay sa usaping pampamilya.
The neighbor is always interfering in family matters. (neutral wording; negative evaluation)
Nakikisama naman si Joel sa bagong pangkat, pero tahimik pa rin siya.
Joel is getting along with the new group, though he is still quiet. (neutral conversation)
Nakikiisa ang aming tanggapan sa paggunita sa mga boluntaryo.
Our office joins in honoring the volunteers. (formal public statement)
Do not infer these meanings from nakiki- alone. A root is a construction family, and common derivatives acquire their own valency, stance, and register.
Maki- Versus Makipag-
Nakikisali usually presents entry into an activity, while nakikipagtalo presents reciprocal arguing with another party. Both contain social meaning, but makipag- is a distinct reciprocal-social family. This page does not treat its full distribution.
The boundary matters morphologically too: simple-social nakiki-sali and reciprocal-social nakiki-pag-usap both reduplicate ki, but the latter retains pag. Deleting pag can create a different lexical item: nakikiusap means making an appeal or request, not simply βis talking with.β
Common Mistakes
Reduplicating the root instead of ki-
β Nakisisali si Rico sa usapan ng matatanda.
Incorrect β the incompleted social prefix reduplicates ki-, not the first syllable of sali.
β Nakikisali si Rico sa usapan ng matatanda kahit hindi siya inimbitahan.
Rico is joining the adults' conversation even though he was not invited. (neutral; potentially intrusive)
Dropping one ki in nakikikain
β Nakikain sa amin si Pina araw-araw ngayong linggo.
Wrong for the intended recurring meaning β nakikain presents a bounded completed visit for a meal.
β Nakikikain sa amin si Pina araw-araw ngayong linggo.
Pina is eating at our place every day this week. (informal temporary habit)
Treating incompleted aspect as present time only
β Nakitira pa kami kina Tiyo Ramon nang matagpuan namin ang bahay na ito.
Wrong for the intended ongoing background β nakitira presents the stay as a bounded whole.
β Nakikitira pa kami kina Tiyo Ramon nang matagpuan namin ang bahay na ito.
We were still staying with Uncle Ramon and his household when we found this house. (neutral)
Copying English -ing
β Nakikibahagi-ing ang klase sa proyekto ng barangay.
Incorrect β nakikibahagi already carries Filipino incompleted aspect.
β Nakikibahagi ang klase sa proyekto ng barangay ngayong semestre.
The class is taking part in the barangay project this semester. (neutral)
Key Takeaways
Incompleted maki- has the pattern nakiki-, with ki reduplicated before the root. It covers ongoing, temporary, recurring, and stance-like participation across present and past contexts. The joining actor remains the pivot, while a co-participant or activity normally takes a sa-form. The lexical family still determines whether the result means joining, staying as a guest, cooperating, sympathizing, or interfering.
