The requestive prefix paki- presents an action as a favor for the addressee to perform: pakibigay, pakisara, pakitingnan. It is often translated as please, but it is not a detachable courtesy word. The request's actual stance comes from the whole turn: the requested action, voice, mo/ninyo, particles, po, address terms, reasons, and tone.
Frequent paki- forms should be learned as constructions. Filipino affixes do not guarantee that every mechanically invented root combination will sound natural.
Core paki- patterns
| Pattern | Function | Example shape |
|---|---|---|
| paki- + established base | ordinary favor request | Pakibukas ang pinto. |
| paki- + base + mo/ninyo | states familiar or respectful actor | Pakisuri ninyo... |
| paki- + base + po | favor plus addressee respect | Pakihintay po... |
| paki- + base + particle | appeal, sequence, limitation | Pakitingnan naman... |
| pakihuwag + basic verb | polite negative request | Pakihuwag hawakan... |
Isara mo ang pinto bago umalis.
Close the door before leaving. (direct familiar command)
Pakisara naman ang pinto bago ka umalis.
Please close the door before you leave. (favor-oriented)
The direct command assigns a task. The paki- version presents the same action as a favor and adds an appeal through naman. It can still sound impatient if repeated sharply; morphology does not override tone.
Writing and lexical selection
With established native bases, paki- is written as part of the word: pakiabot, pakidala, pakisulat, pakitawag, pakilagay. The form after paki- is not always the bare root learners expect, so imitate attested high-frequency combinations.
Pakitawagan ang klinika at itanong kung bukas sila sa Sabado.
Please call the clinic and ask whether they are open on Saturday.
Pakitawagan includes the place/person-oriented -an form appropriate to calling an endpoint. Mechanical pakitawag ang klinika could instead suggest calling the clinic by name in some contexts.
Pakilagay na lang ang mga susi sa lalagyan sa tabi ng pinto.
Please just put the keys in the container beside the door.
Na lang narrows the request to an acceptable alternative. The natural request form carries no separate future tense; context projects the action.
The addressee is usually understood
A request speech act identifies the actor as the addressee, so an overt pronoun is optional. When expressed, it follows the voice frame.
Pakipirmahan mo ang bawat pahina bago isumite ang kasunduan.
Please sign each page before submitting the agreement. (familiar)
Pakipirmahan po ninyo ang bawat pahina bago isumite ang kasunduan.
Please sign each page before submitting the agreement. (respectful)
Patient-oriented pirmahan selects ang bawat pahina as pivot; the addressee-actor is mo or respectful ninyo. In the respectful version, po precedes the long pronoun.
Using ka/kayo would require an actor-voice request whose addressee is pivot. Politeness never suspends the voice distinction.
Paki-, po, and modal questions do different work
Pakidala po ang kopya sa tanggapan bago magtanghali.
Please bring the copy to the office before noon. (respectful request)
Paki- frames the task as a favor; po marks respect. A modal question can leave more room for refusal:
Maaari po ba ninyong dalhin ang kopya sa tanggapan bago magtanghali?
Could you bring the copy to the office before noon? (respectful, more indirect)
Neither strategy is absolutely more polite. A clear routine service request may favor concise paki-; a burdensome favor may call for a modal question plus an explanation.
Particles shape timing and interpersonal force
Pakihintay muna rito habang kinukuha ko ang resulta.
Please wait here for now while I get the result.
Muna presents waiting as a temporary first step. Naman appeals to cooperation; nga can make a favor request idiomatic but may sound insistent with repetition; lang limits extent. These particles contribute stance, not interchangeable decorations.
Pakitingnan mo nga kung naiwan ko ang kuwaderno sa ibabaw ng mesa.
Please check whether I left the notebook on the table. (familiar)
Here mo nga identifies the familiar addressee and adds an appeal. Intonation determines whether nga sounds cooperative or impatient.
Negative paki- requests
Pakihuwag munang ilipat ang mga upuan; may darating pang pangkat.
Please do not move the chairs yet; another group is still coming.
Huwag supplies negative directive force; paki- frames it as a favor and muna limits the prohibition in time. A respectful alternative is Huwag po muna ninyong ilipat...
Questioning a paki- command with ba is usually less natural than building a modal question. Use Maaari ba ninyong...? when a genuine yes-or-no response about willingness is intended.
Reporting a request is different
Direct paki- has no ordinary completed–incompleted–contemplated paradigm. To report the act of requesting, use an aspect-bearing lexical form such as ipinakiusap.
Ipinakiusap ng tagapangasiwa na huwag munang buksan ang silid.
The manager requested that the room not be opened yet.
Completed ipinakiusap locates the requesting event; the requested non-opening remains embedded and unrealized at that reference point. This distinction is treated in polite requests with paki-.
A short exchange
—May maitutulong ba ako bago umalis? —Oo, pakidala naman ang mga sobre kay Mina. —Sige, ibibigay ko sa kaniya pagdaan ko sa opisina.
—Can I help with anything before leaving? —Yes, please take the envelopes to Mina. —All right, I will give them to her when I pass the office.
The offer licenses a concise paki- reply. The response uses contemplated ibibigay to commit to the later action.
Common Mistakes
Writing an established paki- form separately
❌ Paki dala ang mga sobre kay Mina.
Incorrect spelling — established pakidala is one word.
✅ Pakidala ang mga sobre kay Mina.
Please take the envelopes to Mina.
Using an ang-form addressee as patient-voice actor
❌ Pakisuri kayo ang pangalan sa sertipiko.
Incorrect — the name is pivot, so the respectful addressee-actor requires ninyo.
✅ Pakisuri po ninyo ang pangalan sa sertipiko.
Please check the name on the certificate. (respectful)
Inventing aspect on the direct request
❌ Pakidinala ang kopya kahapon.
Incorrect — a direct paki- request does not form a completed past command this way.
✅ Ipinakiusap ko kahapon na dalhin mo ang kopya.
Yesterday I asked you to bring the copy.
Using hindi for the negative request
❌ Pakihindi ilagay ang kahon sa daanan.
Incorrect — polite prohibition uses pakihuwag, not pakihindi.
✅ Pakihuwag ilagay ang kahon sa daanan.
Please do not put the box in the passageway.
Key Takeaways
- Paki- attaches to established request bases and frames an action as a favor.
- The addressee is usually understood; overt mo/ninyo follows the predicate's voice frame.
- Po, particles, titles, reasons, and tone shape respect separately from paki-.
- Use pakihuwag or respectful huwag po for negative requests.
- Use ipinakiusap and related aspect-bearing forms to report a requesting event, not to issue the request itself.
