Incompleted reciprocal verbs use nag-, reduplicate the root's initial consonant–vowel material, and retain the reciprocal suffix: magsulatan → nagsusulatan, magtulungan → nagtutulungan. They place the viewpoint inside an ongoing reciprocal event or present it as a recurring, still-open relation.
The form is not simply “present tense.” A current exchange, a long-running relationship, and a repeated pattern located in the past can all take incompleted aspect. The plural or coordinated participant set remains the actor-voice pivot. All unlabelled examples are neutral contemporary Filipino.
The Reduplication Pattern
| Basic form | Incompleted form | Repeated material | Typical reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| magsulatan | nagsusulatan | su- | are writing / write regularly to one another |
| magtulungan | nagtutulungan | tu- | are helping one another |
| magtawagan | nagtatawagan | ta- | are calling / call one another |
| magmahalan | nagmamahalan | ma- | love one another |
| magbiruan | nagbibiruan | bi- | are joking with one another |
| magkuwentuhan | nagkukuwentuhan | ku- | are chatting / exchange stories regularly |
| mag-agawan | nag-aagawan | a- | are struggling over something |
With a consonant-initial root, the repeated first syllable follows nag- without a hyphen. With vowel-initial agaw, standard spelling preserves the visible boundary: nag-aagawan. The suffix's surface form is part of the lexical family: biruan, but kuwentuhan.
Nagsusulatan pa rin sina Ofelia at Marites kahit pareho na silang retirado.
Ofelia and Marites still write to each other even though both are retired now.
Nagtutulungan ang mga drayber kapag may nasisirang sasakyan sa ruta.
The drivers help one another whenever a vehicle breaks down on the route.
The first is a continuing relationship; the second is a recurring pattern. Neither sentence claims that the action is occurring at the exact moment of speaking.
Ongoing and Recurring Reciprocity
Nagkukuwentuhan ang mga tindera habang wala pang mamimili.
The vendors are chatting while there are no customers yet.
The simultaneous habang clause favors an ongoing reading. Predicate-first order naturally places the longer actor group after the verb.
Nagtatawagan kami tuwing may bagyo para alamin kung ligtas ang lahat.
We call one another whenever there is a typhoon to find out whether everyone is safe.
Exclusive kami refers to the speaker's group and excludes the addressee. The same incompleted form can combine with inclusive tayo when the addressee belongs to the calling group.
Noong magkalapit pa ang mga opisina namin, nagbibiruan kami tuwing tanghalian.
When our offices were still near each other, we used to joke with one another every lunchtime.
Past time comes from noong and the surrounding context. Incompleted nagbibiruan presents the joking as habitual within that past interval.
The system-wide contrast is developed under incompleted aspect.
Incompleted Versus Completed
Nagyayakapan ang mga manlalaro habang ipinahahayag ang resulta.
The players are embracing one another while the result is being announced.
Nagyakapan ang mga manlalaro nang marinig nila ang resulta.
The players embraced one another when they heard the result.
The controlled pair keeps the reciprocal root and participants constant. Nagyayakapan locates the viewpoint inside the mutual embracing; nagyakapan packages the embrace as bounded.
Nagmamahalan ang mag-asawa, pero hindi sila laging nagkakasundo.
The married couple love each other, but they do not always agree.
Here incompleted aspect describes a continuing relation, not an action visibly unfolding. English lexical stativity does not prevent Filipino from using an aspect-marked verb.
Competition and Distributed Activity
The construction's incompleted form preserves lexical meanings beyond strict pairwise reciprocity.
Nag-aagawan sa huling payong ang magkakapatid habang lumalakas ang ulan.
The siblings are struggling over the last umbrella as the rain grows heavier.
The contested item appears in a sa phrase because mag-agawan conventionally profiles competition over something. Do not infer its frame from English word order.
Nagtatakbuhan sa bakuran ang mga tuta tuwing binubuksan ang tarangkahan.
The puppies run around the yard whenever the gate is opened.
This is distributed energetic running, not puppies “running one another.” The repeated ta- marks incompleted aspect inside the lexical magtakbuhan family.
Questions, Negation, and a Short Exchange
Hindi na nagtitinginan ang dalawang saksi habang naghihintay sa labas.
The two witnesses are no longer looking at each other while waiting outside.
Hindi na ends a previously existing ongoing pattern. It does not turn the verb into completed aspect.
—Nagsasabihan ba kayo ng totoo tungkol sa gastos? —Oo, ipinapakita namin ang lahat ng resibo.
—Do you tell each other the truth about the expenses? —Yes, we show all the receipts.
The content told takes ng in ng totoo. Plural kayo supplies the reciprocal set; exclusive namin in the answer excludes the questioner.
Lexical Restrictions
Some plain mag- families are already reciprocal: nag-uusap, nagkikita, and nagtatalo do not require -an merely because English uses each other. Other roots establish conventional mag-...-an families with stem adjustments. Nagsasabihan is standard; a learner cannot predict its -han solely from the final vowel of sabi.
Makipag- changes the participant frame: nakikipagsulatan si Rina kay Berto singles out Rina as pivot and Berto as counterpart. Nagsusulatan sina Rina at Berto packages the pair symmetrically. That contrast is about construction and valency, not aspect alone.
Common Mistakes
Omitting root reduplication
❌ Nagsulatan sina Pia at Joy buwan-buwan hanggang ngayon.
Aspect mismatch for an open recurring pattern — nagsulatan packages the correspondence as completed.
✅ Nagsusulatan sina Pia at Joy buwan-buwan hanggang ngayon.
Pia and Joy write to each other every month and still do.
Reduplicating the suffix instead of the root
❌ Nagsulatanan ang dalawang mananaliksik tungkol sa proyekto.
Incorrect formation — incompleted aspect repeats initial root material, not the suffix.
✅ Nagsusulatan ang dalawang mananaliksik tungkol sa proyekto.
The two researchers are corresponding about the project.
Dropping the hyphen with a vowel-initial root
❌ Nagaagawan sa mikropono ang mga kandidato.
Incorrect standard spelling — preserve the boundary in nag-aagawan.
✅ Nag-aagawan sa mikropono ang mga kandidato.
The candidates are competing for the microphone.
Treating the reduplicated syllable as English agreement
❌ Nagtatawagan-s ang magpinsan gabi-gabi.
Incorrect — Filipino does not add English third-person -s; nagtatawagan already marks incompleted aspect.
✅ Nagtatawagan ang magpinsan gabi-gabi.
The cousins call each other every night.
Key Takeaways
- Form incompleted reciprocal verbs with nag- + initial-root reduplication + root + suffix.
- The form presents mutual action or a related plural configuration as ongoing, recurring, or open.
- Time may be present or past; aspect is not tense.
- The reciprocal participant set remains the actor pivot, while lexical frames determine themes and sa complements.
- Preserve actual stem alternations and the hyphen before vowel-initial roots.
