The central valency fact of mag-...-an is that the participants in the mutual relation are normally packaged together as one actor-voice pivot. In Nagsulatan sina Lia at Ben, the pivot is the pair sina Lia at Ben; there is no separate direct object meaning “each other.” Additional material may identify what is exchanged, what the interaction concerns, or where it happens.
The relation is not always strictly pairwise. Depending on the root, the same constructional family can express cooperation, competition, collision, simultaneous emotion, or distributed motion. Voice supplies the actor-group alignment; lexical meaning determines the detailed participant frame. All unlabelled examples are neutral contemporary Filipino.
The Reciprocal Actor Set
| Role | Typical marking | Example | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| reciprocal set | ang/sina or ang-form plural pronoun | sina Lia at Ben; ang magkapatid; sila | actor-voice pivot containing all mutual participants |
| exchanged item | ng | ng mga larawan | theme in magpalitan or magbigayan |
| content communicated | ng or a topic phrase | ng totoo; tungkol sa bayarin | content with magsabihan or magsulatan |
| joint task | sa or sa pag- | sa pagkukumpuni | activity with magtulungan |
| contested goal | sa | sa huling puwesto | goal with mag-agawan or mag-unahan |
Nagpalitan ng mga punlang gulay sina Liza at Cora pagkatapos ng eksibisyon.
Liza and Cora exchanged vegetable seedlings after the exhibition.
Sina Liza at Cora contains both exchangers. Ng mga punlang gulay names what moved between them; it is not a third reciprocating participant.
Nagsasabihan ng totoo ang magkakasosyo kapag may problema sa pananalapi.
The business partners tell one another the truth when there is a financial problem.
The reciprocal set is ang magkakasosyo, while ng totoo expresses content. A root's lexical frame, not the English position of truth, determines that marker.
Reciprocity Requires a Semantically Plural Set
The pivot may be morphologically plural, a collective noun, or a coordinated phrase.
Nagtutulungan sila sa pag-aalaga sa hardin ng paaralan.
They help one another care for the school garden.
Nagbiruan sina Joel, Mina, at Pao habang nag-aayos ng mga dekorasyon.
Joel, Mina, and Pao joked with one another while arranging the decorations.
Nagyakapan ang mag-ina nang makalabas sila sa paliparan.
The mother and child hugged each other when they came out of the airport.
The dyad noun ang mag-ina names a two-person set even without mga. A genuinely singular pivot such as si Joel cannot support ordinary reciprocal “with one another” by itself. Filipino verbs do not add plural agreement; plurality is a semantic requirement of the construction.
Animacy Depends on the Root
Social relations normally require sentient participants, but physical symmetric events can involve inanimate entities.
Nagbanggaan ang dalawang traysikel sa kurbadang madulas.
The two tricycles collided on the slippery curve.
No intention is implied. The two vehicles occupy symmetric roles in the collision, so the reciprocal configuration remains possible.
By contrast, magsabihan, magbiruan, and magmahalan ordinarily require participants capable of communication, joking, or affection. Personification can relax this in literature, but such uses should be read as (literary) rather than neutral literal descriptions.
Actor Voice Versus an Explicit Reciprocal Patient
Filipino can express a similar real-world relation with different voice structures:
Nagtulungan ang magkakapitbahay matapos ang pagguho.
The neighbors helped one another after the landslide.
Tinulungan ng magkakapitbahay ang isa't isa matapos ang pagguho.
The neighbors helped one another after the landslide.
In nagtulungan, the neighbor group is the actor pivot and reciprocity is built into the verb. In tinulungan ... ang isa't isa, the actors take an ng phrase and the explicit reciprocal patient ang isa't isa is selected. The English translations match, but the Filipino information structures do not. See reciprocal isa't isa for the marker forms of that phrase.
Symmetric mag-...-an Versus Singled-Out makipag-
Nagsulatan sina Nena at Berto tungkol sa kasaysayan ng kanilang angkan.
Nena and Berto corresponded about their family history.
Nakipagsulatan si Nena kay Berto tungkol sa kasaysayan ng kanilang angkan.
Nena corresponded with Berto about their family history.
The first treats Nena and Berto as one symmetric actor set. The second selects Nena alone as the engaging actor pivot and marks her counterpart with kay Berto. Makipag- is therefore useful when the discourse is about one participant's engagement with another; it is not merely a longer spelling of mag-...-an.
Simple maki- differs again. Nakisali si Nena sa talakayan presents Nena as entering an activity already involving others. It neither packages all discussants into one reciprocal pivot nor necessarily entails equal two-way participation.
Lexicalized Plural Configurations
Nag-unahan sa pila ang mga mamimili nang buksan ang pinto.
The shoppers tried to get ahead of one another in the line when the door opened.
Nagtawanan ang mga bata nang magkamali sa pagkanta ang kanilang guro.
The children all laughed when their teacher made a mistake while singing.
Nag-unahan is competitive. Nagtawanan commonly describes shared or simultaneous laughter and need not mean that the children laughed at one another. Likewise, nagtakbuhan often describes running about or scattering. Translating every mag-...-an verb as “do X to each other” produces false meanings.
Some frequent mutual events use a different family altogether: nag-usap “talked,” nagkita “met,” nagtalo “argued,” and nagkasundo “reached agreement.” A root is a family of constructions, and its most natural reciprocal member must be learned lexically.
Questions, Negation, and Omitted Material
Hindi na nagkikibuan ang magkaibigan mula nang hindi sila magkasundo sa negosyo.
The friends no longer speak to each other since they disagreed about the business.
Nagkikibuan is a lexical reciprocal expression meaning to exchange speech or acknowledge each other; under hindi na, it conventionally means that they are no longer on speaking terms. This is not transparently predictable from a productive root plus English each other.
—Nagtulungan ba kayo sa paghahanda ng pagkain? —Oo, pero si Mara ang nagluto ng kanin.
—Did you work together to prepare the food? —Yes, but Mara was the one who cooked the rice.
The reciprocal verb does not require every subtask to be identical. The group cooperated, while the follow-up clause assigns one specific task to Mara.
Common Mistakes
Using an ng-form for the reciprocal actor set
❌ Nagtulungan nina Aya at Pio sa pag-akyat ng mga kahon.
Incorrect actor-voice alignment — the cooperating pair is the pivot and requires sina.
✅ Nagtulungan sina Aya at Pio sa pag-akyat ng mga kahon.
Aya and Pio worked together to carry the boxes upstairs.
Giving a reciprocal verb a lone singular pivot
❌ Nagyakapan si Ruel nang dumating sa terminal.
Incomplete for ordinary reciprocity — a lone singular pivot supplies only one hug participant.
✅ Nagyakapan sina Ruel at Ditas nang magkita sa terminal.
Ruel and Ditas hugged each other when they met at the terminal.
Mixing a symmetric pivot with a kay-counterpart
❌ Nagsulatan si Ditas kay Ruel tungkol sa reunion.
Mixed frame — nagsulatan normally includes both correspondents in its pivot.
✅ Nagsulatan sina Ditas at Ruel tungkol sa reunion.
Ditas and Ruel corresponded about the reunion.
Treating every final -an as patient voice
❌ Nagsabihan nila ang totoo bago ang botohan.
Incorrect alignment — reciprocal nagsabihan is actor voice, not a patient-voice -an verb.
✅ Nagsabihan sila ng totoo bago ang botohan.
They told each other the truth before the vote.
Key Takeaways
- Mag-...-an normally packages all mutual participants as one plural or coordinated actor pivot.
- Themes, content, tasks, and contested goals remain separate participants with lexically selected markers.
- Similar real-world reciprocity can be framed with actor-voice mag-...-an or explicit patient ang isa't isa.
- Makipag- singles out one engaging actor and a sa/kay counterpart; maki- foregrounds joining another party's activity.
- Reciprocity, cooperation, competition, collision, and distributed action are lexical extensions, not one invariant English translation.
