In a prefixed Filipino verb, aspectual reduplication is not always placed immediately after whatever letters happen to come first. Each derivational family supplies a template: simple mag- copies the root onset and vowel (nagluluto), magpa- repeats causative pa (nagpapaluto), and makipag- repeats ki (nakikipag-usap). The right question is therefore “Which established family is this?” rather than “Where is the first syllable of the printed word?”
All unlabelled forms below are neutral contemporary Filipino. The hyphen in forms such as nakikipag-usap preserves the boundary before a vowel-initial root; it does not mark the reduplicant itself.
A Map of Common Templates
| Family | Completed | Incompleted | Contemplated | Repeated material |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| mag- + luto | nagluto | nagluluto | magluluto | root lu |
| makapag- + luto | nakapagluto | nakapagluluto / nakakapagluto | makapagluluto / makakapagluto | root lu or prefix ka |
| magpa- + luto | nagpaluto | nagpapaluto | magpapaluto | derivational pa |
| maki- + sali | nakisali | nakikisali | makikisali | ki |
| makipag- + usap | nakipag-usap | nakikipag-usap | makikipag-usap | ki |
| i- + padala | ipinadala | ipinapadala | ipapadala | stem pa |
These patterns are morphologically related, but not reducible to one string-editing rule. Pa in nagpapaluto belongs to causative structure; pa in ipinapadala begins the lexical stem padala. Their similar surface repetition has different internal sources.
Simple Prefixes Copy Root Material
Ambo is cooking soup while his sibling cuts vegetables.
Ambo will cook soup once the guests have arrived.
The mag- family copies lu- from luto. The prefix alternates between nag- in begun aspects and mag- in the unbegun row; reduplication does not replace that alternation.
With makapag-, contemporary Filipino permits two established templates. The careful root-copy pattern repeats root material (nakapagluluto/makapagluluto); the widespread prefix-copy pattern repeats ka (nakakapagluto/makakapagluto):
Nakapagluluto na ulit si Tessa kahit nakabenda pa ang kamay niya.
Tessa can cook again even though her hand is still bandaged.
The displayed root-copy form characterizes an ability that is currently available or repeatedly realized. Prefix-copy nakakapagluto has the same aspect and participant structure; neither pattern repeats ma or pag. The relevant variation is covered in the makapag incompleted guide.
Complex Prefixes Can Copy Derivational Material
Rina is having Cora cook noodles for the meeting.
Rina will have noodles cooked once the number of guests is confirmed.
The causative family repeats pa, not lu: nag-pa-pa-luto, mag-pa-pa-luto. Rina is causer pivot; ng pansit is the caused theme, and kay Cora identifies the personal causee or service provider.
Participation families show another template:
Nakikisali ang mga kapitbahay sa paglilinis tuwing Linggo.
The neighbors join in the cleaning every Sunday.
Lino is talking with the drivers about the new route.
Maki- and makipag- repeat ki, yielding nakikisali/makikisali and nakikipag-usap/makikipag-usap. Do not treat pag as the material to copy. The hyphen before usap remains because the consonant-final pag- meets a vowel-initial root.
The Same Time Can Contain Different Aspect Views
Rina had noodles cooked yesterday for thirty guests.
Rina was still having noodles cooked when additional guests arrived yesterday.
Both situations are past. Completed nagpaluto packages the commission as bounded; incompleted nagpapaluto pa opens an internal view and provides the background for dumating. Mapping nagpapa- to present tense would miss this contrast.
Contemplated forms likewise need not refer to the future of speech:
Akala ni Rina, magpapaluto ang samahan, pero nagdala pala ng sariling pagkain ang lahat.
Rina thought the association would have food cooked, but everyone turned out to have brought their own food.
Magpapaluto is unbegun relative to the earlier thought. Aspect establishes viewpoint; akala establishes the past frame.
Other Templates Must Be Learned as Families
Patient-oriented i- constructions place aspect inside a different template:
Ipinapadala ng klinika ang resulta sa pasyente sa loob ng isang araw.
The clinic sends the result to the patient within one day.
The clinic will send the new schedule this afternoon.
The conveyed item is pivot. Ipinapadala is incompleted and ipapadala contemplated; forms such as ipidinadala do not follow this family.
Another frequent lexicalized family is magkaroon–nagkaroon–nagkakaroon–magkakaroon:
Nagkakaroon ng maikling pagpupulong ang pangkat tuwing Lunes.
The team holds a short meeting every Monday.
The segment ka appears in the incompleted and contemplated rows, but karoon is part of an established high-frequency family. This pattern should be learned as a paradigm, not extended freely to any base beginning with roon.
The affix-stacking guide explains why the relative scope of voice, derivation, and aspect matters.
Modals, Negation, and a Short Exchange
Rina wants to have rice porridge cooked for the volunteers.
After the modal predicate gusto, basic magpaluto presents the desired action without contemplated reduplication. English futurity does not force magpapaluto in every unbegun context.
Lino no longer communicates with that company.
—Makikisali ba kayo sa talakayan mamaya? —Oo, pero makikinig muna kami.
—Will you join the discussion later? —Yes, but we'll listen first.
Negation leaves the selected aspect family intact. The question uses contemplated makikisali; exclusive kami excludes the person asking.
Common Mistakes
Incorrect for an ongoing causative — magpa- repeats pa, not lu from the root.
Rina is having Cora cook soup while she arranges the table.
Incorrect standard spelling — pag- keeps a hyphen before vowel-initial usap.
Lino is talking with the drivers before the trip begins.
❌ Ipidinadala ng klinika ang resulta sa pasyente.
Incorrect family — the incompleted form of ipadala is ipinapadala.
The clinic sends the result to the patient by message.
❌ Nagkaroon-ed ng pagpupulong ang pangkat kahapon.
Incorrect — English -ed cannot attach to the completed Filipino form nagkaroon.
The team held an emergency meeting yesterday afternoon.
Key Takeaways
- Reduplication occurs inside an established prefixed template, not at one universal letter position.
- Simple mag- copies root material; makapag- permits root-copy and prefix-copy variants; magpa- repeats causative pa.
- Maki-/makipag- repeat ki, while i- families such as ipadala have their own pattern.
- Aspect expresses an event's contour; time expressions and larger clauses locate it in time.
- Hyphens preserve particular prefix–root boundaries and must not be inserted or deleted mechanically.
