“Repeat the first syllable” is a useful first description of Filipino aspectual reduplication, but the accurate unit is usually the initial consonant-and-vowel material of the relevant root or stem. Thus sulat → sumusulat/susulat, luto → nagluluto/magluluto, and basa → binabasa/babasahin. The copied portion helps mark incompleted or contemplated aspect; it does not by itself select voice or lexical meaning.
All unlabelled forms are neutral contemporary Filipino. Analytical hyphens below expose structure; ordinary surface forms remain solid unless standard spelling requires a hyphen.
Core Patterns
| Family | Completed | Incompleted | Contemplated | Copied material |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| sulat, actor -um- | sumulat | sumusulat | susulat | su- |
| luto, actor mag- | nagluto | nagluluto | magluluto | lu- |
| basa, patient | binasa | binabasa | babasahin | ba- |
| punta, locative | pinuntahan | pinupuntahan | pupuntahan | pu- |
| bigay, conveyed-theme i- | ibinigay | ibinibigay | ibibigay | bi- |
Incompleted forms combine reduplication with begun-event morphology; contemplated forms combine it with the unbegun row. The surface position changes across families.
Sumusulat si Dina ng liham habang tahimik pa ang mga bata.
Dina is writing a letter while the children are still quiet.
Susulat si Dina sa punong-guro bukas ng umaga.
Dina will write to the principal tomorrow morning.
Why “First Syllable” Is Only Shorthand
Sulat divides as su-lat, so its first syllable and its aspectual copy are both su-. The more revealing case is punta, divided pun-ta: aspect still copies pu-, not the coda n, producing pupunta/pinupuntahan rather than forms with pun- repeated.
Pinupuntahan ng nars ang mga pasyenteng hindi makalakad.
The nurse visits the patients who cannot walk.
Pupuntahan ng nars ang bagong pasyente pagkatapos ng tanghalian.
The nurse will visit the new patient after lunch.
The locative suffix -an remains, while aspect changes the material near the root's left edge. The CV-versus-CVC guide explains why the coda is normally excluded.
Initial ng is one consonant despite its two letters:
Ngumingiti ang bata kapag naririnig niya ang boses ng kaniyang ama.
The child smiles whenever they hear their father's voice.
Ngingiti ang bata kapag nakita niya ang bagong tuta.
The child will smile when they see the new puppy.
The copied material is ngi-, with ng treated as the Filipino digraph /ŋ/.
Aspect, Not English Tense
Nagluluto si Belen ngayon para sa mga bisita.
Belen is cooking now for the guests.
Nagluluto si Belen tuwing may pulong ang samahan.
Belen cooks whenever the association has a meeting.
The same incompleted form receives ongoing and habitual readings from context. Contemplated magluluto can appear in a past expectation:
The completed and incompleted forms can also share one past setting:
Sumulat si Dina sa punong-guro kahapon at ipinadala niya agad ang liham.
Dina wrote to the principal yesterday and sent the letter at once.
Sumusulat pa si Dina sa punong-guro nang mawalan ng kuryente kahapon.
Dina was still writing to the principal when the power went out yesterday.
Completed sumulat presents the writing as bounded; incompleted sumusulat pa opens an internal view. The adverb kahapon, not the presence or absence of reduplication alone, places both in the past.
Akala namin, magluluto si Belen, pero nagdala pala siya ng pagkain.
We thought Belen would cook, but it turned out she brought food.
The cooking is unbegun relative to the earlier thought. Reduplication marks event contour, not a future tense tied only to speech time.
Keep Voice Constant
Binabasa ni Pio ang tala habang naghihintay ang lahat.
Pio is reading the note while everyone waits.
Babasahin ni Pio ang tala sa harap ng lupon mamaya.
Pio will read the note before the panel later.
Patient ang tala remains the pivot; actor ni Pio remains in a ng-form. Reduplication does not turn a patient-voice form into actor voice.
Loans, Clusters, and Lexical Limits
Integrated cluster-initial loans can copy more than a simple written consonant plus vowel. Trabaho appears in nagtatrabaho/magtatrabaho, where the onset cluster belongs with the copied vowel. Speakers may avoid heavily adapted or uncertain formations by choosing an established alternative. Code-switched English bases follow separate hyphenation conventions and are not the model here.
Nagtatrabaho si Mila sa klinika habang nag-aaral siya sa gabi.
Mila works at the clinic while studying at night.
The pattern is conventional. Do not infer that any newly borrowed cluster can be reduplicated confidently without checking usage.
Negation and a Short Exchange
Hindi pa ibinibigay ng opisina ang mga sertipiko dahil kulang ang pirma.
The office is not issuing the certificates yet because a signature is missing.
Incompleted ibinibigay remains under hindi pa because the clause concerns the current phase of an expected activity.
—Magluluto ba kayo mamaya? —Oo, pero bibili muna kami ng mga sangkap.
—Will you cook later? —Yes, but we will buy the ingredients first.
Both contemplated forms contain reduplication. Exclusive kami excludes the questioner.
Common Mistakes
❌ Sulsulat si Dina sa punong-guro bukas.
Incorrect — aspectual reduplication copies su-, not the coda l.
✅ Susulat si Dina sa punong-guro bukas tungkol sa paligsahan.
Dina will write to the principal tomorrow about the contest.
❌ Naglululuto si Belen para sa mga bisita ngayon.
Incorrect — lu- is copied once in the ordinary incompleted form.
✅ Nagluluto si Belen para sa mga bisita ngayon.
Belen is cooking for the guests now.
❌ Babasa ni Pio ang tala mamaya.
Incorrect patient-voice formation — contemplated basahin is babasahin.
✅ Babasahin ni Pio ang tala mamaya sa harap ng lupon.
Pio will read the note later before the panel.
❌ Sumusulat-ed si Dina nang tumawag ang punong-guro.
Incorrect — English -ed cannot attach to Filipino incompleted morphology.
✅ Sumusulat si Dina nang tumawag ang punong-guro.
Dina was writing when the principal called.
Key Takeaways
- Aspectual reduplication usually copies initial consonant-and-vowel material, not an entire orthographic syllable.
- Formation occurs inside an established voice family.
- Incompleted forms can be ongoing or habitual; contemplated forms present unbegun events.
- Digraph ng, onset clusters, vowel-initial roots, and complex prefixes require phonological analysis.
- Standard aspectual reduplication is written within the word, not with an arbitrary hyphen.
