CV versus CVC Reduplication

In the most productive Filipino verb-aspect pattern, the reduplicant is generally CV-shaped: it copies the initial consonant or onset plus the following vowel, but not a syllable-final consonant. “Copy the first syllable” happens to work for open initial syllables such as su-lat → susulat and ta-nim → tatanim. It fails with closed initial syllables such as pun-ta → pupunta and kan-ta → kakanta, where the coda is not copied.

CVC or larger copied strings do occur elsewhere in Filipino morphology and lexical reduplication, but they should not be substituted for the ordinary aspectual pattern. All unlabelled forms are neutral contemporary Filipino.

CV Copying in Aspect

RootInitial spoken shapeAspectual copyContemplated form
sulatsu- (CV)su-susulat
tanimta- (CV)ta-tatanim
puntapun- (CVC)pu-pupunta
kantakan- (CVC)ka-kakanta
ngitingi- (CV, with digraph onset)ngi-ngingiti

Tatanim si Ador ng sitaw sa bakanteng bahagi ng hardin.

Ador will plant string beans in the empty part of the garden.

Kakanta ang koro pagkatapos ng maikling talumpati.

The choir will sing after the short speech.

💡
For ordinary aspect, copy the onset and vowel, then attach the full base: ta + tanim, pu + punta, su + sulat.

The Coda Stays with the Base

Nagtatanim ang mga mag-aaral habang inihahanda ng guro ang mga paso.

The students are planting while the teacher prepares the pots.

Pumupunta si Celso sa bukid tuwing madaling-araw.

Celso goes to the farm every dawn.

In nagtatanim, copied ta- precedes full tanim; the intervocalic n begins the root's second syllable. In pumupunta, copied pu- occurs with the -um- family, while the coda n of pun-ta remains only inside the full root.

Compare completed forms in the same past setting:

Nagtanim ang mga mag-aaral ng kamatis kahapon.

The students planted tomatoes yesterday.

Nagtatanim pa ang mga mag-aaral nang magsimulang umulan kahapon.

The students were still planting when it began to rain yesterday.

Both are past. CV reduplication contributes the incompleted viewpoint in the second; it is not a present-tense prefix.

Larger Repetition Has Other Functions

Filipino also repeats full roots or larger bases for iteration, attenuation, distribution, or lexical meaning. Standard spelling normally uses a hyphen when an independently meaningful full form is repeated.

Naglakad-lakad kami sa tabing-dagat habang hinihintay ang paglubog ng araw.

We strolled around the seashore while waiting for sunset.

Naglakad-lakad repeats the full root lakad and suggests walking around without a single directed endpoint. It is not the incompleted aspect form naglalakad.

Naglalakad kami pauwi nang makita namin ang nawawalang aso.

We were walking home when we saw the missing dog.

The controlled pair contrasts full-root iterative/attenuative reduplication with CV aspectual reduplication. Their meanings and spelling differ.

Lexical words may contain CVC-looking or larger repeated material without supporting a productive aspect rule. Analyze them on the aspectual-versus-lexical page rather than stripping arbitrary letters.

Consonant Clusters Are Not CVC Copying

An integrated loan such as trabaho begins with the cluster tr-. Its aspectual forms nagtatrabaho/magtatrabaho preserve the cluster plus vowel in the copied material. That is onset copying, not the addition of a coda.

Magtatrabaho si Enya sa bahay sa susunod na dalawang araw.

Enya will work from home for the next two days.

Do not reduce the pattern to the first two written letters; phonological onset structure matters. Variation is especially likely in newer loans, so established Filipino alternatives or dictionary-attested paradigms are safer than invented forms.

Voice Families Still Determine the Surface Word

Susulatin ni Omar ang buod pagkatapos niyang basahin ang mga tala.

Omar will write the summary after reading the notes.

Patient susulatin copies su- but also retains the contemplated patient suffix -in. Actor susulat would select Omar as pivot instead.

Susulat si Omar ng buod pagkatapos niyang basahin ang mga tala.

Omar will write a summary after reading the notes.

The reduplicant is identical; voice morphology and markers distinguish the constructions. CV versus CVC cannot be decided without the lexical family and intended pivot.

Negation, Questions, and Time

Hindi pa umaalis ang mga bisita dahil malakas ang ulan.

The guests are not leaving yet because the rain is heavy.

—Pupunta ba kayo sa taniman bukas? —Oo, tatanim kami bago uminit.

—Will you go to the field tomorrow? —Yes, we will plant before it gets hot.

The question and reply use ordinary CV reduplication. Exclusive kami excludes the questioner.

💡
Shape and function must be matched. CV copying is central to aspect; full-root or coda-including repetition may express another derivational or lexical meaning.

Common Mistakes

❌ Punpunta si Celso sa bukid bukas.

Incorrect — the coda n of pun-ta is not part of the aspectual reduplicant.

✅ Pupunta si Celso sa bukid bukas bago uminit.

Celso will go to the farm tomorrow before it gets hot.

❌ Sulsulatin ni Omar ang buod mamaya.

Incorrect — patient contemplated sulatin copies su-, not sul-.

✅ Susulatin ni Omar ang buod mamaya bago ang pagpupulong.

Omar will write the summary later before the meeting.

❌ Naglakad-lakad kami pauwi nang biglang umulan.

Wrong for the intended single ongoing journey — full-root repetition suggests strolling or walking around.

✅ Naglalakad kami pauwi nang biglang umulan.

We were walking home when it suddenly rained.

❌ Nagtatanim-ed ang mga mag-aaral nang dumating ang punong-guro.

Incorrect — English -ed cannot attach to Filipino incompleted morphology.

✅ Nagtatanim ang mga mag-aaral nang dumating ang punong-guro.

The students were planting when the principal arrived.

Key Takeaways

  • Ordinary aspectual reduplication is usually CV-shaped, even when the first spoken syllable is CVC.
  • The coda stays in the full base: ta + tanim, not tan + tanim.
  • Full-root and larger repetition can express iterative, attenuative, distributive, or lexical meanings.
  • Cluster copying reflects a complex onset, not a CVC reduplicant.
  • Voice and aspect jointly determine the full surface form.
