Completed versus Incompleted Aspect

Completed aspect looks at an event from outside as a bounded whole. Incompleted aspect places the viewpoint inside its development or presents it as repeated. This is not a simple finished-versus-unfinished fact about the world: the speaker chooses how to package the relevant interval.

All unlabelled uses are neutral contemporary Filipino.

Morphological Contrasts Across Voice Families

FamilyCompletedIncompletedWhat changes
Actor -um-, sulatsumulatsumusulatinitial root material is copied
Actor mag-, lutonaglutonaglulutonag- plus root reduplication
Patient, basabinasabinabasa-in- plus copied root material
Locative, puntapinuntahanpinupuntahanreduplication; -an remains
Conveyed-theme i-, bigayibinigayibinibigayinternal -in- plus reduplication

Reduplication is characteristic of incompleted forms, but its location depends on the established family. The verb-formation guide treats the surface patterns.

Berto wrote a complaint after the elevator broke.

Berto is still writing a complaint while the guard talks to the technician.

The Same Time Does Not Force the Same Aspect

Last night, Lira read the entire proposal before she went to sleep.

Last night, Lira was still reading the proposal when the director called.

Both are past. Binasa reaches the boundary of the reading event; binabasa pa opens a view inside it. Nang tumawag supplies the interruption, not the aspect of the background verb.

Do not ask whether the event β€œreally finished” in all possible senses. Ask whether the clause presents the relevant occurrence as a whole or from within.

Long Events Can Be Completed

Duration does not equal incompletion.

Celia worked at the port for twelve years before she moved.

The work lasted a long time, but the twelve-year interval is closed. Incompleted aspect would be natural if another event were located inside that interval:

Nagtatrabaho si Celia sa pantalan noong ipinanganak ang bunso niya.

Celia was working at the port when her youngest child was born.

Noong supplies past reference. Completed versus incompleted is a viewpoint contrast, not a stopwatch measurement.

Incompleted Includes Habitual and Repeated Events

Mon brings cooked food to his mother every Wednesday.

No delivery is necessarily underway now. Tuwing Miyerkules makes nagdadala habitual. Brief events also take incompleted aspect when repeated:

Kumakatok nang tatlong beses ang guwardiya bago pumasok.

The guard knocks three times before entering.

Incompleted morphology supplies an open or recurring pattern. English simple present does not mean Filipino has a separate present or habitual tense.

Result Structure Changes the Inference

With a naturally result-oriented verb, completed aspect normally asserts that the endpoint was reached.

Isinara ni Paolo ang tindahan bago bumagyo.

Paolo closed the shop before the storm arrived.

Paolo was closing the shop when the power went out.

The second sentence does not guarantee that closure was completed. With activity verbs, however, completed aspect merely bounds an interval; it does not imply a permanent final state.

This interaction between lexical event type and aspect is genuine. No single English word such as finished can replace the analysis.

Narrative Foreground and Background

Completed forms commonly advance a narrative; incompleted forms establish a scene or ongoing background.

The passengers were waiting under the shelter when the last bus arrived. They boarded at once, and the bus left a few minutes later.

Naghihintay supplies the open background. Completed dumating, sumakay, and umalis move the sequence forward. This is a discourse tendency, not a rigid rule; speakers can choose another viewpoint for a particular effect.

Negation and Questions

Rina did not finish the report last night; she wrote only the first section.

Completed tinapos is the achievement denied. Incompleted morphology remains possible under hindi pa when the clause concerns the current phase:

Hindi pa binubuksan ng komite ang mga sobre dahil wala pa ang tagamasid.

The committee is not opening the envelopes yet because the observer has not arrived.

β€”Inaayos pa ba ni Tomas ang gripo? β€”Hindi na; inayos niya iyon kaninang tanghali.

β€”Is Tomas still fixing the faucet? β€”Not anymore; he fixed it around noon.

The exchange contrasts an incompleted question with a completed correction.

Negation does not erase aspect. Identify whether the speaker denies a bounded event, an ongoing phase, or a recurring pattern.

Voice Remains Constant in a Controlled Pair

Mara gave the blankets to the clinic yesterday.

Mara was giving the blankets to the clinic when the truck arrived.

Both select ang mga kumot as the conveyed-theme pivot. Only aspect changes. This kind of controlled comparison prevents voice differences from being mistaken for aspect differences.

Common Mistakes

Wrong for the intended completed whole β€” binabasa presents the reading from within.

Lira read the whole book last night and finished it before midnight.

Incorrect β€” Filipino incompleted morphology never takes English -ing.

Celia worked at the port for twelve years.

Mismatched viewpoint for a simply bounded event β€” isinasara opens an internal view without supporting context.

Paolo closed the shop and went home before the storm arrived.

❌ Binasa si Lira ang panukala kagabi.

Incorrect patient-voice alignment β€” the actor requires ni.

Lira read the proposal last night before the meeting.

Key Takeaways

  • Completed aspect presents a bounded whole; incompleted aspect presents an internal or recurring view.
  • Both forms can occur in past contexts, and incompleted forms also carry habitual meaning.
  • Duration alone does not select aspect.
  • Lexical event type shapes endpoint inferences.
  • Keep voice and marker alignment constant when comparing aspect.
