Phonological Changes Under Reduplication

Filipino aspectual reduplication copies a sound-based unit inside a particular verb family, not simply the first convenient letters of an English-style stem. That is why sulat → susulat, alis → aalis, plano → magpaplano, and tahi → mananahi look different. Syllable structure, affix boundaries, and earlier sound changes determine what surfaces.

The process is systematic, but it is not a universal “future-tense rule.” Reduplication participates in incompleted and contemplated forms, while other morphology distinguishes whether the event has begun. Time still comes from context. All unlabelled examples below are neutral contemporary Filipino.

The Main Surface Patterns

EnvironmentBase familyReduplicated formWhat surfaces
simple consonant onsetsumulatsusulat / sumusulatinitial consonant + vowel: su-
vowel-initial rootumalisaalis / umaalisinitial vowel: a-
borrowed consonant clustermagplanomagpaplano / nagpaplanofirst consonant + first vowel: pa-, not the whole cluster
vowel after a productive prefixmag-aralmag-aaral / nag-aaralrepeated a; hyphen preserves the affix boundary
stem changed by a suffixluto → lutuinlulutuin / nilulutothe aspect form copies lu- inside the established suffixed family
nasal-substituted familymanahimananahi / nananahicopy follows the established substituted stem

The table gives surface patterns, not instructions for inventing a verb. Affix family and lexical meaning must already be known. Sumulat and magsulat, for example, are established but do not have identical distributions merely because both concern writing.

Simple CV Copying

With many consonant-initial roots, the copied material is the first consonant and vowel, not the entire closed syllable. Sulat contributes su-, and lakad contributes la-.

Susulat si Mara sa punong-guro pagkatapos ng pulong.

Mara will write to the principal after the meeting. (contemplated; neutral)

Sumusulat si Mara sa punong-guro habang tahimik pa ang tanggapan.

Mara is writing to the principal while the office is still quiet. (incompleted; neutral)

Contemplated susulat presents writing as not yet begun. Incompleted sumusulat combines the same copied su- with begun-event morphology. Neither form changes for Mara's person or number.

Vowel-Initial Roots Preserve Adjacent Vowels

When a root begins with a vowel, the vowel itself is copied: alis → aalis, inom → iinom. In incompleted -um- forms, the infix and copied vowel produce umaalis and umiinom.

Aalis kami bago dumami ang sasakyan sa lansangan.

We will leave before traffic increases. (contemplated; neutral)

Umiinom pa ng salabat si Nardo nang dumating ang traysikel.

Nardo was still drinking ginger tea when the tricycle arrived. (incompleted; neutral)

Standard spelling does not delete a vowel merely because English readers find adjacent vowels unusual. The sequence records the morphological structure. For mag-/nag- families with a native vowel-initial root, the hyphen remains: mag-aral, nag-aral, nag-aaral, mag-aaral.

Nag-aaral si Liza sa silid-aklatan tuwing hapon.

Liza studies in the library every afternoon. (habitual incompleted; neutral)

💡
Read adjacent vowels as evidence of word structure. In aalis the root vowel is copied; in nag-aaral the hyphen also marks the boundary after the prefix.

Borrowed Clusters Do Not Reduplicate as Whole Clusters

Integrated roots such as plano and trabaho begin with clusters that older native roots usually lack. The reduplicant follows the Filipino CV pattern: pa- + plano and ta- + trabaho.

Magpaplano ang lupon ng bagong ruta sa susunod na pagpupulong.

The committee will plan a new route at the next meeting. (contemplated; neutral)

Nagtatrabaho pa si Abel nang magsara ang huling tindahan.

Abel was still working when the last shop closed. (incompleted; neutral)

The standard forms are magpaplano, not magplaplano, and nagtatrabaho, not nagtratrabaho. This is a phonological effect: the copy fits a CV template even though the intact root keeps pl- or tr-.

Some Stem Changes Precede the Aspectual Copy

Not every visible alternation is caused by reduplication itself. The root luto has patient-voice basic lutuin, where the vowel before the suffix surfaces as u. The aspect forms are built within that established family.

Lulutuin ni Dalisay ang ginataang kalabasa mamayang gabi.

Dalisay will cook the squash in coconut milk later tonight. (contemplated patient voice; neutral)

Niluluto pa ni Dalisay ang kalabasa nang dumating ang mga bisita.

Dalisay was still cooking the squash when the visitors arrived. (incompleted patient voice; neutral)

The copied unit is lu- in both. Learn lutuin—niluto—niluluto—lulutuin as a family rather than applying a separate spelling substitution after copying.

Nasal Substitution Applies Inside the Family

In many mang- families, the nasal prefix assimilates and a root-initial consonant may disappear. Reduplication then appears inside the conventional surface family. With tahi, the series includes manahi, nanahi, nananahi, mananahi.

Nananahi si Aling Pura ng mga uniporme para sa palatuntunan.

Aling Pura is sewing uniforms for the program. (incompleted; neutral)

Mananahi siya ng kurtina bukas kapag dumating ang tela.

She will sew a curtain tomorrow when the cloth arrives. (contemplated; neutral)

The t of tahi does not simply reappear in the copied sequence. Nasal substitution and reduplication interact. Mananahi can also be a noun meaning “seamstress/tailor”; syntax and context distinguish that lexical noun from the contemplated verb.

See nasal substitution at root boundaries before generalizing this alternation to a new root.

Aspect Still Determines Event Contour

The same time period can contain completed and incompleted forms. Phonological shape does not independently assign past or present time.

Kahapon, nagtatrabaho si Abel sa bodega nang tumawag ang tagapamahala.

Yesterday, Abel was working in the warehouse when the manager called. (incompleted; neutral)

Kahapon, nagtrabaho si Abel sa bodega hanggang tanghali.

Yesterday, Abel worked in the warehouse until noon. (completed; neutral)

Nagtatrabaho copies ta- because the work is viewed from within or as continuing. Nagtrabaho lacks that aspectual copy because the interval is viewed as bounded. Kahapon makes both clauses past.

A Short Exchange

—Mag-aaral pa ba si Dina mamayang gabi? —Oo, pero hindi siya mag-aaral nang matagal.

—Will Dina still study later tonight? —Yes, but she will not study for long. (neutral conversation)

The contemplated form mag-aaral differs from basic mag-aral by the copied vowel after the hyphen. Clause context supplies its time reference, while the visible copy supplies aspectual structure. The duration phrase uses adverbial nang matagal, not marker ng.

💡
The visible copy is only one coordinate. Identify the full affix family, aspect, voice, and context before assigning a meaning to the form.

Common Mistakes

Copying an entire onset cluster

❌ Magtratrabaho si Felix sa munisipyo sa Lunes.

Incorrect reduplication — the whole tr cluster is not copied.

✅ Magtatrabaho si Felix sa munisipyo sa Lunes.

Felix will work at the municipal hall on Monday. (neutral)

Deleting the copied vowel

❌ Alis kami bukas bago sumikat ang araw.

Wrong for the intended contemplated statement — the aspect form must show the copied initial vowel.

✅ Aalis kami bukas bago sumikat ang araw.

We will leave tomorrow before sunrise. (neutral)

Bare alis occurs in other constructions and clipped (informal) commands, but it is not the ordinary contemplated actor-voice form here.

Removing the hyphen at a native vowel boundary

❌ Nagaaral si Dina sa kusina dahil maingay sa sala.

Incorrect standard spelling — nag- before vowel-initial aral keeps a hyphen.

✅ Nag-aaral si Dina sa kusina dahil maingay sa sala.

Dina is studying in the kitchen because the living room is noisy. (neutral)

Mapping contemplated directly to future regardless of viewpoint

❌ Magpaplano ang lupon ngayon habang nakabukas ang kanilang mga tala.

Wrong for the intended meaning that planning is already underway — magpaplano presents it as not yet begun.

✅ Nagpaplano ang lupon ngayon habang nakabukas ang kanilang mga tala.

The committee is planning now while their notes are open. (neutral)

Copying letters without respecting the established stem

❌ Lolotoin ni Dalisay ang kalabasa mamayang gabi.

Incorrect — the patient family is lutuin, and its contemplated form is lulutuin.

✅ Lulutuin ni Dalisay ang kalabasa mamayang gabi.

Dalisay will cook the squash later tonight. (neutral)

Key Takeaways

  • Reduplication copies a phonologically defined unit inside an established verb family.
  • Vowel-initial roots retain adjacent written vowels; native vowel boundaries after productive prefixes keep the standard hyphen.
  • Integrated onset clusters copy only the first consonant plus vowel, while the root's cluster remains intact.
  • Nasal substitution may reshape the stem before the reduplicated surface form is interpreted.
  • Reduplication contributes aspectual contour, not English tense or person agreement.
