اتفاق افتادن is the ordinary neutral Persian expression for an event “happening, occurring, taking place.” It combines اتفاق “event/occurrence” with افتادن, whose past stem is افتادـ and present stem افتـ. The core forms are اتفاق افتاد “it happened,” اتفاق میافتد “it happens,” and اتفاق بیفتد “that it happen.”
Unlike English happen, this predicate does not normally take a person as subject. The event itself is expressed by اتفاق, by a modified phrase such as اتفاق عجیبی, or by a clause understood from context. Consequently, the whole expression is overwhelmingly third-person singular. Persian also needs no dummy equivalent of English it: چه اتفاقی افتاد؟ literally asks “what event happened?”
Principal parts and lexical restrictions
| Form | Persian | Romanization | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| infinitive | اتفاق افتادن | ettefâgh oftâdan | to happen |
| past base | اتفاق افتاد | ettefâgh oftâd | it happened |
| present base | اتفاق افت | ettefâgh oft | اتفاق میافتد |
| past participle | اتفاق افتاده | ettefâgh oftâde | اتفاق افتاده است |
| present subjunctive | اتفاق بیفتد | ettefâgh bioftad | that it happen |
| negative subjunctive | اتفاق نیفتد | ettefâgh nayoftad | that it not happen |
| imperative | — | — | normally unavailable: events cannot be ordered to occur |
There is no useful ordinary command meaning “happen!” اتفاق بیفتد is a third-person subjunctive, not an imperative. Negative اتفاق نیفتد is common in wishes and precautions: مواظب باش اتفاقی نیفتد “be careful that nothing happens.” Honest paradigms must reflect this lexical restriction rather than pretending every morphological cell is equally usable.
نمیدانم دیشب در ساختمان چه اتفاقی افتاد.
nemi-dânam dishab dar sâkhtemân che ettefâghi oftâd.
I don't know what happened in the building last night. (neutral standard)
نگران نباش؛ بعید است اتفاق بدی بیفتد.
negarân nabâsh; ba'id ast ettefâgh-e badi bioftad.
Don't worry; it is unlikely that anything bad will happen. (neutral; subjunctive)
The افتادن paradigm underneath the compound
The following six-person table shows the inherited morphology of افتادن. It is useful for recognizing the stems, but the full compound اتفاق افتادن does not normally use first- or second-person subjects: اتفاق میافتم cannot mean “I happen.” In the lexical predicate, third-person forms are the meaningful ones.
| Person | Present of افتادن | Simple past | Present perfect | Present subjunctive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | میافتم | افتادم | افتادهام | بیفتم |
| you (sg.) | میافتی | افتادی | افتادهای | بیفتی |
| he/she/it | میافتد | افتاد | افتاده است | بیفتد |
| we | میافتیم | افتادیم | افتادهایم | بیفتیم |
| you (pl./polite) | میافتید | افتادید | افتادهاید | بیفتید |
| they | میافتند | افتادند | افتادهاند | بیفتند |
With the compound, use اتفاق میافتد، اتفاق افتاد، اتفاق افتاده است، اتفاق بیفتد. Negatives are اتفاق نمیافتد، اتفاق نیفتاد، اتفاق نیفتاده است، اتفاق نیفتد. Present prefix می joins vowel-initial افتد with a ZWNJ. Subjunctive بیفتد and negative نیفتد have the established bioftad / nayoftad shapes, not mechanical بافتد / نافتد. Compare the broader subjectless patterns on Impersonal Constructions.
چنین اشتباهی معمولا وقتی اتفاق میافتد که همه عجله دارند.
chonin eshtebâhi ma'mulan vaqti ettefâgh mi-oftad ke hame ajale dârand.
This kind of mistake usually happens when everyone is in a hurry. (neutral standard)
خوشبختانه در مسیر برگشت هیچ اتفاقی نیفتاد.
khoshbakhtâne dar masir-e bargasht hich ettefâghi nayoftâd.
Fortunately, nothing happened on the way back. (neutral narrative)
The event is the subject, never a direct object
In چه اتفاقی افتاد؟, چه اتفاقی is the event subject. In این اتفاق دیروز افتاد, این اتفاق is specific, but it still does not take را because nothing acts on it. The predicate is intransitive. A cause, if expressed, uses a separate causal phrase rather than becoming an agentive object.
این اتفاق درست جلوی ورودی اصلی افتاد.
in ettefâgh dorost jelow-e vorudi-ye asli oftâd.
This happened right in front of the main entrance. (neutral standard; event subject)
هنگام آزمایش اتفاق عجیبی افتاد و همه ساکت شدند.
hengâm-e âzmâyesh ettefâgh-e ajibi oftâd va hame sâket shodand.
Something strange happened during the experiment, and everyone fell silent. (neutral standard)
Plural event phrases can take plural agreement, especially when the events are strongly individuated or contrasted. Because event nouns are inanimate, singular agreement is also common in standard Persian. This is the general inanimate-agreement system, not a special irregularity of اتفاق افتادن.
Time, place, and affected person
The setting is normally outside the core predicate. Time can be a bare adverbial—دیروز، ساعت سه، وسط جلسه—and place takes در، نزدیک، جلوی, or another locative expression. Neither setting is a direct object.
تصادف حدود ساعت شش در جادهی قدیم اتفاق افتاد.
tasâdof hodud-e sâ'at-e shesh dar jâdde-ye qadim ettefâgh oftâd.
The collision occurred at about six on the old road. (formal-neutral report)
With an affected person, Persian often uses برای: این اتفاق برای من هم افتاده است “this has happened to me too.” The person remains an experiencer/affected participant, not the subject of happen.
چنین اتفاقی قبلا برای یکی از همکارانم هم افتاده است.
chonin ettefâghi qablan barâ-ye yeki az hamkârân-am ham oftâde ast.
Something like this has happened to one of my colleagues before too. (neutral standard)
For harmful events, سر کسی آمدن is a different idiom: چه بلایی سرت آمد؟ “What happened to you?” It should not be generated by simply changing the preposition around اتفاق افتادن.
Impersonal and clause-like uses
When the event is unknown, generic, or supplied by context, the predicate appears in third singular without an overt lexical subject: اتفاق افتاد “it happened,” ممکن است دوباره اتفاق بیفتد “it may happen again.” This is impersonal in discourse, but Persian still has no dummy subject word.
ممکن است دوباره اتفاق بیفتد، پس همهچیز را ثبت کنید.
momken ast dobâre ettefâgh bioftad, pas hame-chiz râ sabt konid.
It may happen again, so document everything. (formal-neutral)
Classical and deliberately archaizing narrative can use اتفاق افتاد که... in the sense “it so happened that....” Present-day Persian normally chooses a more direct clause or پیش آمد. The construction does not mean that که is the grammatical subject; که introduces the event's propositional content.
اتفاق افتاد که هر دو گروه در یک روز به نتیجه رسیدند.
ettefâgh oftâd ke har do goruh dar yek ruz be natije residand.
It so happened that both groups reached the result on the same day. (literary/archaizing narrative)
Related event predicates and false friends
رخ دادن and روی دادن mean “occur” in formal news, historical, or academic prose. پیش آمدن often presents a situation, problem, or opportunity as arising, especially relative to a person. شدن is the broad everyday “become/happen” in questions such as چی شد؟ “What happened?” These overlap but do not share all complements.
Noun اتفاق can mean “event, incident,” while adverb اتفاقا means “actually, as it happens, coincidentally.” اتفاقی can mean “an incident” or “accidentally/by chance” depending syntax. Neither is a finite form of اتفاق افتادن.
اتفاقا من هم همانجا بودم، ولی چیزی ندیدم.
ettefâqan man ham hamân-jâ budam, vali chizi na-didam.
As it happens, I was there too, but I didn't see anything. (neutral spoken standard; adverb اتفاقا)
Tehran conversational forms
Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran) uses اتفاق میافته، اتفاق افتاده، اتفاق بیفته. In an immediate conversation, speakers often choose shorter چی شد؟ rather than چه اتفاقی افتاد؟ Both are correct but differ in register and weight.
دیشب اینجا چه اتفاقی افتاد که همه پلیسها اومدن؟
dishab injâ che ettefâghi oftâd ke hame polis-hâ umadan?
What happened here last night that brought all the police? (informal, regional: Tehran)
اگه دوباره این اتفاق بیفته، مستقیم به من زنگ بزن.
age dobâre in ettefâgh biofte, mostaqim be man zang be-zan.
If this happens again, call me directly. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Common Mistakes
1. Making a person the subject of “happen”
❌ من دیروز اتفاق افتادم.
Incorrect for ‘something happened to me’ — a person is not the subject of اتفاق افتادن.
✅ دیروز اتفاق عجیبی برای من افتاد.
diruz ettefâgh-e ajibi barâ-ye man oftâd.
Something strange happened to me yesterday.
2. Marking the event with را
❌ این اتفاق را ساعت پنج افتاد.
Incorrect — the event is the subject of the intransitive predicate, not an object.
✅ این اتفاق نزدیک ساعت پنج افتاد.
in ettefâgh nazdik-e sâ'at-e panj oftâd.
This happened close to five o'clock.
3. Building the subjunctive mechanically
❌ ممکن است دوباره اتفاق بافتد.
Incorrect — the established subjunctive of افتادن is بیفتد.
✅ ممکن است فردا هم همین اتفاق بیفتد.
momken ast fardâ ham hamin ettefâgh bioftad.
The same thing may happen tomorrow too.
4. Separating the imperfective prefix
❌ این مشکل هر ماه اتفاق می افتد.
Incorrect standard orthography — می attaches to افتد with a ZWNJ.
✅ این مشکل معمولا آخر ماه اتفاق میافتد.
in moshkel ma'mulan âkhar-e mâh ettefâgh mi-oftad.
This problem usually occurs at the end of the month.
Key Takeaways
- Memorize اتفاق افتادن — اتفاق افتاد — اتفاق افت, with اتفاق بیفتد and اتفاق نیفتد.
- The event is the subject; it does not take را, and a person affected can take برای.
- Time and location are settings: دیروز، ساعت سه، در اداره.
- The whole predicate is normally third-person; Persian needs no dummy “it.”
- Tehran اتفاق میافته / بیفته and everyday چی شد؟ must remain distinct from standard written forms.
