زیستن zistan: to Live

زیستن “live, dwell, exist” has past stem زیستـ and the exceptionally short present stem زیـ. It remains current in (literary), philosophical, biographical, environmental, and some (academic) prose. It is not the ordinary way to give one's address: everyday Iranian Persian says در تهران زندگی می‌کنم, not normally در تهران می‌زیم.

English live conceals three Persian distinctions. زندگی کردن describes residing or conducting one's life; زنده بودن states that someone or something is alive; زیستن presents living as an elevated mode, condition, or span of existence. The last verb is morphologically important and culturally familiar even though speakers usually replace it in conversation.

Principal parts and full paradigm

FormPersianReadingRegister/use
infinitiveزیستنzistanto live; literary/formal
past stemزیستـzist-زیستم
present stemزیـzi-می‌زیم
participleزیستهzisteزیسته است
imperativeبزی / بزییدbeziy / beziyidrare, literary
short imperativeزیziyarchaic/literary, especially in wishes

Because the present stem ends in the vowel ی, person endings create a pronounced glide. The spelling می‌زیم is read mi-ziyam, not mi-zim; similarly می‌زیی is mi-ziyi. The written forms look deceptively short, so both spelling and pronunciation deserve deliberate practice.

PersonPresentSimple pastPresent perfectSubjunctive
Iمی‌زیمزیستمزیسته‌امبزیم

Negatives are نمی‌زیم، نزیستم، نزیسته‌ام، نزیم. These forms are grammatically regular once the two stems are known. Their difficulty is lexical and stylistic: the present stem is unusually short, and many finite forms occur mainly in edited prose rather than spontaneous speech.

او سال‌های پایانی عمرش را دور از زادگاه خود زیست.

u sâl-hâ-ye pâyâni-ye omr-ash râ dur az zâdgâh-e khod zist.

He or she lived the final years of life far from their birthplace. (constructed biographical/literary example)

گونه‌ای که زمانی در این تالاب می‌زیست، اکنون تنها در جنوب کشور دیده می‌شود.

gune-i ke zamâni dar in tâlâb mi-zist, aknun tanhâ dar jonub-e keshvar dide mi-shavad.

A species that once lived in this wetland is now seen only in the south of the country. (academic environmental prose)

Where زیستن is at home

زیستن is intransitive in its basic spatial use. A location takes در, a companion or community takes با / در میان, and manner is supplied by an adverbial phrase or adjective: در تبعید زیستن، با ترس زیستن، آزاد زیستن. A duration may occur as a measure phrase. Literary Persian can also present a life-span as a marked object, as in سال‌های پایانی عمرش را زیست; learners should not generalize that elevated pattern to ordinary addresses.

آنان ناچار بودند سال‌ها در سکوت و انزوا بزیند.

ânân nâchâr budand sâl-hâ dar sokut va enzavâ beziyand.

They were compelled to live for years in silence and isolation. (constructed literary-style example; subjunctive)

آزاد زیستن برای او شعاری سیاسی نبود، شیوه‌ی زندگی بود.

âzâd zistan barâ-ye u sho'âr-i siyâsi nabud, shive-ye zendegi bud.

For him or her, living freely was not a political slogan but a way of life. (constructed essayistic example)

بررسی می‌کنیم که این جانداران چگونه در آب شور می‌زیند.

barrasi mi-konim ke in jândârân chegune dar âb-e shur mi-ziyand.

We examine how these organisms live in salt water. (academic)

The academic use is especially natural when the subject is humanity in general, a species, or a historical population. For a present-day person's home, زندگی کردن remains neutral. This is a register distinction, not an animacy rule: a poet may use زیستن of one person, and a scientist may use it of microbes.

💡
Choose زیستن when “living” is being contemplated, narrated at an elevated level, or analyzed as a biological/social condition. Choose زندگی کردن for ordinary residence and daily life.

زیستن, زندگی کردن, and زنده بودن

The three predicates answer different questions:

PredicateCore questionTypical register
زندگی کردنWhere/how does someone conduct life?neutral, all everyday contexts
زنده بودنIs the entity alive rather than dead?neutral
زیستنWhat is the condition or mode of living?literary/formal/academic

از سال گذشته در قزوین زندگی می‌کنم، اما بیشتر هفته را در تهرانم.

az sâl-e gozashte dar qazvin zendegi mi-konam, ammâ bishtar-e hafte râ dar tehrân-am.

I have lived in Qazvin since last year, but I spend most of the week in Tehran. (neutral conversation)

با وجود سرمای شدید، هر سه نهال هنوز زنده‌اند.

bâ vojud-e sarmâ-ye shadid, har se nehâl hanuz zende-and.

Despite the severe cold, all three saplings are still alive. (neutral; biological state)

Perfect زیسته است can describe accumulated life experience or a completed life viewed from the present. It does not by itself mean “is alive.” A deceased writer may have سال‌ها در پاریس زیسته است in a biographical account; biological survival still requires زنده است.

این شاعر در سه کشور زیسته و به دو زبان نوشته است.

in shâ'er dar se keshvar ziste va be do zabân neveshte ast.

This poet has lived in three countries and written in two languages. (formal biographical prose)

Imperatives and wishes

بزی، بزیید are morphologically ordinary but pragmatically rare (literary) commands. The shorter زی is (archaic/literary) and survives chiefly in elevated wishes such as دیر زی “live long.” Do not imitate it in a routine health wish. Current Persian says زنده باش “stay well / long live” or عمر طولانی داشته باش.

بزی و آنچه آموخته‌ای به نسل پس از خود بسپار.

beziy va ânche âmukhte-i be nasl-e pas az khod bespâr.

Live, and pass what you have learned to the generation after you. (constructed literary-style example)

امیدوارم سال‌های سال سالم و خوشحال زندگی کنی.

omidvâram sâl-hâ-ye sâl sâlem va khoshhâl zendegi koni.

I hope you live healthily and happily for many years. (neutral modern wish)

💡
The rare imperative is not irregular: بـ + زی + ending gives بزی، بزیید. Its rarity is a matter of register and lexical choice, not defective grammar.

زیست as a noun and compound element

زیست also functions as a learned noun or bound lexical element connected with life and habitation: زیست‌بوم “ecosystem/habitat,” زیست‌شناسی “biology,” زیست‌پذیر “habitable,” and محیط زیست “environment.” These are stored nouns and compounds, not past-tense forms in disguise. Observe their established spacing: زیست‌بوم and زیست‌شناسی use ZWNJ, while محیط زیست contains a normal word space.

گسترش جاده زیست‌بوم این منطقه را تکه‌تکه کرده است.

gostaresh-e jâdde zist-bum-e in mantaqe râ tekke-tekke karde ast.

The expansion of the road has fragmented this region's ecosystem. (academic/environmental)

Common Mistakes

1. Adding a present ending to the past stem

❌ این پرنده هنوز در بخش شمالی تالاب می‌زیستد.

Incorrect — present forms use زیـ; زیستـ belongs to the past system.

✅ این پرنده هنوز در بخش شمالی تالاب می‌زید.

in parande hanuz dar bakhsh-e shomâli-ye tâlâb mi-ziyad.

This bird still lives in the northern part of the wetland. (academic)

2. Using elevated زیستن for a routine address

❌ من اکنون خیابان آزادی را می‌زیم.

Incorrect — a routine residence location is not a را-marked direct object; neutral speech also prefers زندگی کردن.

✅ من اکنون نزدیک میدان آزادی زندگی می‌کنم.

man aknun nazdik-e meydân-e âzâdi zendegi mi-konam.

I now live near Azadi Square. (neutral standard)

3. Using an infinitive as a command

❌ شاد زیستن و از فردا نترس.

Incorrect as a coordinated command — زیستن is the infinitive.

✅ شاد بزی و از فردا نترس.

shâd beziy va az fardâ natars.

Live happily and do not fear tomorrow. (constructed literary-style example)

4. Misspelling a lexical compound

❌ این پژوهش درباره‌ی زیست شناسی دریاست.

Incorrect standard spelling — زیست‌شناسی is joined with a ZWNJ.

✅ این پژوهش درباره‌ی زیست‌شناسی دریای خزر است.

in pezhuhesh darbâre-ye zist-shenâsi-ye daryâ-ye khazar ast.

This research concerns the biology of the Caspian Sea.

Key Takeaways

  • Memorize زیستن — زیست — زی — زیسته and the glide in می‌زیم mi-ziyam.
  • زیستن is literary, formal, or academic; everyday residence normally uses زندگی کردن.
  • زنده بودن means “be alive”; a perfect of زیستن describes lived experience, not necessarily present survival.
  • بزی is a rare literary imperative, while short زی is archaic/literary.
  • Treat زیست‌بوم، زیست‌شناسی، محیط زیست as established lexical items with their own spacing.
