موفق شدن means “to succeed” or “to manage to do something.” It normally presents an achievement: an attempt reaches its intended result. Persian distinguishes several ways of specifying that result: در کاری موفق شدن names the domain, formal موفق به انجام کاری شدن names an achieved action, and موفق شدن + finite subjunctive clause expresses what the successful participant managed to do.
The adjective موفق means “successful.” With بودن, it describes a state or evaluation: طرح موفق بود “the project was successful.” With شدن, it profiles entry into success or the successful completion of an attempt: تیم موفق شد “the team succeeded.” English succeed, manage, and be successful therefore do not all map to one Persian form.
Principal parts
| Form | Persian | Romanization | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| infinitive | موفق شدن | movaffaq shodan | to succeed |
| past base | موفق شد | movaffaq shod | موفق شدم |
| present base | موفق شو | movaffaq shav | موفق میشوم |
| past participle | موفق شده | movaffaq shode | موفق شدهاند |
| subjunctive | موفق شوم | movaffaq shavam | that I succeed |
| imperative | موفق شو / موفق شوید | movaffaq sho / movaffaq shavid | limited literal command “become successful” |
These are current (neutral standard) forms, but the imperative deserves caution. Persian normally wishes someone success with موفق باشی / موفق باشید “good luck / may you be successful,” not the command موفق شو. Negative موفق نشو is grammatically possible but pragmatically hostile or contrastive, so it is not an everyday teaching command.
امیدوارم در مصاحبه موفق باشی.
omidvâram dar mosâhebe movaffaq bâshi.
I hope your interview goes well. (neutral familiar wish; موفق بودن, not an imperative of شدن)
این بار باید با برنامه جلو بروی تا موفق شوی.
in bâr bâyad bâ barnâme jelow beravi tâ movaffaq shavi.
This time you need to proceed systematically so that you succeed. (neutral standard; purpose clause)
Core paradigm
| Person | Present | Simple past | Present perfect | Present subjunctive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | موفق میشوم | موفق شدم | موفق شدهام | موفق شوم |
| you (sg.) | موفق میشوی | موفق شدی | موفق شدهای | موفق شوی |
| he/she/it | موفق میشود | موفق شد | موفق شده است | موفق شود |
| we | موفق میشویم | موفق شدیم | موفق شدهایم | موفق شویم |
| you (pl./polite) | موفق میشوید | موفق شدید | موفق شدهاید | موفق شوید |
| they | موفق میشوند | موفق شدند | موفق شدهاند | موفق شوند |
Compounds with شدن commonly omit affirmative بـ in careful standard Persian: موفق شوم، موفق شود. Forms with بشوم، بشود also occur in speech, but the prefixless compound forms are the editorial default. Negatives are موفق نمیشوم، موفق نشدم، موفق نشدهام، موفق نشوم. The underlying allomorphy شو / شَوـ is covered on شدن shodan: to Become.
پس از چند ماه مذاکره، دو طرف موفق شدند اختلاف اصلی را حل کنند.
pas az chand mâh mozâkere, do taraf movaffaq shodand ekhtelâf-e asli râ hall konand.
After several months of negotiation, the two sides managed to resolve the main disagreement. (formal-neutral; simple past achievement)
این روش در چند کشور با موفقیت اجرا شده است.
in ravesh dar chand keshvar bâ movaffaqiyyat ejrâ shode ast.
This method has been implemented successfully in several countries. (formal; adverbial با موفقیت)
Domain with در
Use در to name the activity, field, test, negotiation, or effort within which someone succeeds: در کار، در آزمون، در جلب سرمایه موفق شدن. This phrase does not name a destination; it delimits the domain in which the outcome counts as success.
او در آزمون ورودی موفق شد، اما دانشگاه دیگری را انتخاب کرد.
u dar âzmun-e vorudi movaffaq shod, ammâ dâneshgâh-e digari râ entekhâb kard.
He or she succeeded in the entrance exam but chose another university. (neutral standard)
این شرکت در جذب نیروهای متخصص موفق نبوده است.
in sherkat dar jazb-e niru-hâ-ye motekhasses movaffaq nabude ast.
This company has not been successful in recruiting specialists. (formal/business; موفق بودن evaluates a record)
The second example uses موفق بودن, not شدن, because it evaluates a sustained performance rather than reporting one bounded successful attempt.
Formal موفق به + verbal noun
موفق به + noun/verbal noun + شدن is a compact (formal, especially news and administrative) construction: موفق به دریافت مجوز شد “succeeded in obtaining the permit.” The به phrase names the achieved result. It is not freely interchangeable with در: در دریافت مجوز موفق شد evaluates success within the attempt, while موفق به دریافت مجوز شد foregrounds the attained result.
پژوهشگران موفق به شناسایی عامل بیماری شدند.
pazhuheshgarân movaffaq be shenâsâyi-ye âmel-e bimâri shodand.
The researchers succeeded in identifying the cause of the disease. (academic/formal)
تیم امداد سرانجام موفق به باز کردن مسیر شد.
tim-e emdâd sar-anjâm movaffaq be bâz kardan-e masir shod.
The rescue team finally succeeded in opening the route. (formal/news register)
In everyday conversation, a finite complement is often lighter than this nominal style.
Controlled subjunctive action
To say “manage to do X,” Persian commonly follows موفق شدن with a finite subjunctive: موفق شدم بلیت پیدا کنم. Optional که may make a longer clause boundary clearer. The understood subject of the complement is normally the successful participant itself; this is subject control.
بالاخره موفق شدیم مشکل را بدون تعویض دستگاه حل کنیم.
bâlâkhare movaffaq shodim moshkel râ bedun-e ta'viz-e dastgâh hall konim.
We finally managed to solve the problem without replacing the device. (neutral standard)
او موفق شد که نظر سرمایهگذاران را جلب کند.
u movaffaq shod ke nazar-e sarmâye-gozarân râ jalb konad.
He or she managed to attract the investors' interest. (formal-neutral; explicit که)
An English infinitive is therefore not translated with Persian long infinitive کردن in this frame. The embedded verb is finite and agrees with the controller. See Finite Complement Clauses with که.
Negation: nonachievement, not necessarily defeat
موفق نشدم means “I did not succeed / did not manage.” It asserts that the intended result was not reached, but it does not by itself say why. شکست خوردم more strongly presents the outcome as a defeat; ناموفق بودم evaluates the person or effort as unsuccessful.
موفق نشدم با مسئول پرونده صحبت کنم؛ فردا دوباره تماس میگیرم.
movaffaq nashodam bâ mas'ul-e parvande sohbat konam; fardâ do-bâre tamâs mi-giram.
I didn't manage to speak with the person handling the file; I'll call again tomorrow. (neutral standard; nonachievement)
اگر راهبرد اول موفق نشود، گزینهی دوم را آزمایش میکنیم.
agar râhbord-e avval movaffaq nashavad, gozine-ye dovvom râ âzmâyesh mi-konim.
If the first strategy does not succeed, we will test the second option. (formal-neutral; negative subjunctive)
Tehran conversational forms
Everyday Tehran (informal, regional: Tehran) reduces present شدن to میشم، میشی، میشه، میشیم، میشین، میشن. The very frequent past موفق شدم / نشدم usually keeps its standard consonants, though surrounding clauses become colloquial.
هرچی تلاش کردم، موفق نشدم بلیت پیدا کنم.
har-chi talâsh kardam, movaffaq nashodam belit peydâ konam.
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't manage to find a ticket. (informal, regional: Tehran)
اگه همینطور ادامه بدی، مطمئنم موفق میشی.
age hamin-towr edâme bedi, motma'en-am movaffaq mi-shi.
If you keep going like this, I'm sure you'll succeed. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Common Mistakes
1. Giving موفق شدن a direct object
❌ او امتحان را موفق شد.
Incorrect — the domain of success takes در.
✅ او در امتحان دشوار موفق شد.
u dar emtehân-e doshvâr movaffaq shod.
He or she succeeded in the difficult exam.
2. Using a long infinitive after موفق شد
❌ موفق شدم مشکل را حل کردن.
Incorrect — the controlled action is a finite subjunctive.
✅ موفق شدم مشکل فنی را حل کنم.
movaffaq shodam moshkel-e fanni râ hall konam.
I managed to solve the technical problem.
3. Adding direct-object را after formal موفق به
❌ پژوهشگر موفق به دریافت جایزه را شد.
Incorrect — the achieved verbal noun is governed by به and takes no را.
✅ پژوهشگر موفق به دریافت جایزه شد.
pazhuheshgar movaffaq be daryâft-e jâyeze shod.
The researcher succeeded in receiving the award. (formal)
4. Using شدن for a stable evaluation
❌ این طرح از ابتدا موفق بود شد.
Incorrect — بودن and شدن cannot be stacked as two finite copulas; a continuing evaluation uses موفق بود.
✅ این طرح آزمایشی از ابتدا موفق بود.
in tarh-e âzmâyeshi az ebtedâ movaffaq bud.
This pilot project was successful from the outset.
Key Takeaways
- موفق شدن profiles achievement; موفق بودن describes or evaluates a successful state.
- Use در for a domain and formal موفق به + verbal noun شدن for an attained result.
- “Manage to do” normally takes a same-subject finite subjunctive, not a Persian long infinitive.
- موفق نشدم reports nonachievement without necessarily implying a decisive defeat.
- Wishes normally use موفق باشی / باشید; the literal imperative of شدن is rarely the natural social formula.
