Tajik is the standardized Persian of Tajikistan, written in a modified Cyrillic alphabet. Much of its basic grammar is recognizably Persian: nouns precede ezafe-linked modifiers, verbs normally close the clause, me- marks imperfective forms, and person is marked on the verb. Yet script, sound correspondences, some constructions, and a century of Russian and Central Asian contact create real distance.
This page is receptive-first. The course still asks you to produce Iranian Persian in Perso-Arabic script. Tajik forms appear in tables for recognition and are not sent to Iranian Persian text-to-speech. The analysis follows John Perry’s Tajik Persian reference grammar and can be checked against the research-built Tajik National Corpus.
The script is a divide, not a different family tree
Tajik Cyrillic writes consonants and vowels more explicitly than the Persian abjad. It therefore makes some Tajik pronunciations visible that Persian spelling leaves underspecified. It is still an orthography, not narrow phonetic transcription.

This table is not a mechanical converter. Modern Tajik does not maintain a general phonemic long-versus-short vowel contrast: ӣ has a restricted orthographic distribution, while ӯ represents a distinct standard vowel whose realization varies regionally. Persian و can represent a consonant or more than one vowel history; several Perso-Arabic letters have merged in pronunciation; and Tajik vocabulary has its own standardized forms. Modern transliteration research therefore treats the mapping as a linguistic problem, not character replacement.

These two scripts are used to write closely related varieties of Persian, but they do not convert one-to-one.

The correspondences are structural, not word-for-word rules. Tajik writes plural -ҳо, ezafe -и, and object marker -ро directly onto the preceding word. Iranian Persian writes ها with ZWNJ, normally leaves consonant-final ezafe unwritten, and writes را separately.
Pronouns and demonstratives
Core Tajik pronouns are recognizable after script learning: ман “I,” ту “you singular,” ӯ “he/she,” мо “we,” шумо “you plural/polite,” and онҳо “they.” Like Iranian Persian, Tajik has no grammatical gender distinction in the third-person pronoun and permits subject omission where agreement and context suffice.
Demonstratives ин “this” and он “that” precede nouns and do not agree for gender. This is a major continuity, not a Russian pattern.
او امروز نمیآید، چون در شهر دیگری است.
u emruz nemi-âyad, chon dar shahr-e digari ast.
He or she is not coming today because they are in another city. (Iranian Persian with gender-neutral او)
این نامه برای شماست و آن یکی را باید بایگانی کنیم.

The imperfective prefix is visibly related
Iranian می corresponds widely to Tajik ме-. Compare Persian میروم with Tajik меравам. The vowel, spelling, stem shape, and ending differ, but the prefix occupies the same morphological zone before the present stem.
هر روز چند صفحه فارسی میخوانم و واژههای تازه را یادداشت میکنم.
har ruz chand safhe Fârsi mi-khânam va vâzhe-hâ-ye tâze râ yâd-dâsht mi-konam.
Every day I read several pages of Persian and note the new words.
Do not convert every Tajik ме- word by swapping letters. You still need the Iranian present stem and ending. Recognition proceeds by identifying prefix, stem, and person together.
A real grammatical contrast: the progressive
Standard Tajik can form an ongoing progressive with a past-converb-like form plus inflected истода-, as in Ман китоб хонда истодаам “I am reading a book.” Standard Iranian Persian instead uses inflected داشتن followed by a می verb.
الآن دارم کتابی دربارهی تاریخ سمرقند میخوانم.
al'ân dâram ketâbi darbâre-ye târikh-e Samarqand mi-khânam.
I am reading a book about the history of Samarkand right now. (Iranian progressive)
The two constructions express overlapping ongoing meaning but are not morpheme-for-morpheme equivalents. A Persian learner reading Tajik should locate the lexical verb before истода-; in Iranian production, keep دارم... میخوانم.
Russian contact is most visible in vocabulary
Tajik has integrated Russian loans and calques, especially in administrative, technical, urban, and Soviet-era domains. Integration matters: a Russian-origin noun can take Tajik plural, ezafe, and object marking. The Tajik grammar surrounding the loan remains Tajik.

Common Mistakes
1. Treating Cyrillic as a reversible cipher

To read Tajik, it is enough to replace each letter with one Persian letter. (an oversimplification)

2. Copying Tajik progressive structure into Iranian Persian

Incorrect as Iranian Persian for an ongoing reading event — it calques the Tajik progressive.
✅ من الآن دارم فصل آخر کتاب را میخوانم.
man al'ân dâram fasl-e âkhar-e ketâb râ mi-khânam.
I am reading the last chapter of the book right now.
3. Calling Tajik Russian
⚠️ چون تاجیکی با خط سیریلیک نوشته میشود، دستورش روسی است.
chon Tâjiki bâ khatt-e Sirilik neveshte mi-shavad, dastur-ash Rusi ast.
Because Tajik is written in Cyrillic, its grammar is Russian. (a false inference from script)

Tâjiki gune-i az Fârsi ast ke az Rusi ham ta'sir gerefte ast.
Tajik is a variety of Persian that has also been influenced by Russian.
4. Importing Tajik spelling into Iranian output
