Hazaragi and Other Afghan Varieties

Hazaragi names a cluster of Persian varieties associated especially with Hazara communities in Afghanistan and the diaspora. Its grammar is deeply Persian and closely related to Dari, while its pronouns, clitics, particles, sound system, tense–aspect patterns, and contact vocabulary give it a recognizable profile. Calling it “bad Dari” confuses social power with linguistic structure.

There is no single Hazaragi speaker or accent. Usage varies across Hazarajat, Kabul, Quetta, migration networks, generations, and levels of formality. Some speakers identify the variety as a language, some as a dialect of Dari or Persian, and some shift labels by context. Recent qualitative work in Quetta directly documents this negotiation of language and identity; see the speaker-attitudes study. This page teaches receptive landmarks; Iranian Persian remains the course’s production target.

A Persian system with its own patterns

The core order remains Persian-like: modifiers follow the noun through ezafe, objects can take a ra-type marker, and verbs carry person and tense–aspect morphology. At the same time, descriptions report plural markers, pronouns, clitics, and modal paradigms that do not match contemporary Iranian Persian one-for-one. The profile below follows the documented overview in Encyclopaedia Iranica’s Hazaragi description and recent work on Hazaragi achievement predicates and tense.

هزارگی را نباید دری ناقص یا فارسی شکسته نامید.

Hazâragi râ na-bâyad Dari-ye nâqes yâ Fârsi-ye shekaste nâmid.

Hazaragi should not be called defective Dari or broken Persian.

این گویشور در خانه به هزارگی و در اداره به دری رسمی صحبت می‌کند.

in guyeshvar dar khâne be Hazâragi va dar edâre be Dari-ye rasmi sohbat mi-konad.

This speaker uses Hazaragi at home and formal Dari in the office.

The second sentence describes a possible repertoire, not a rule about Hazara people. A speaker may instead use Hazaragi in public, Dari at home, another Afghan language, or mainly a diaspora language.

Pronouns: listen before mapping

Published descriptions give forms approximately transcribed below. The Latin transcription avoids pretending that Hazaragi has one universally accepted Perso-Arabic spelling. Forms and vowels vary locally.

PersonReported Hazaragi formIranian Persian counterpart
1 singularmaمنman
2 singulartuتوto
1 pluralما
2 plural/politeshimûشماshomâ
3 singulari / u, deictically organizedاوu
3 pluralyo / wo in reported systemsآنهاânhâ

Do not replace every heard ma with Iranian ما “we.” In Hazaragi it may be first-person singular. Person endings and discourse identify the referent.

💡
A published transcription is an analytical tool, not a universal spelling standard. Match it to the source’s location and speaker group before comparing vowels.

اگر «مو» را شنیدید، شخص فعل و بافت جمله را هم بررسی کنید.

agar «mu» râ shenidid, shakhs-e fe'l va bâft-e jomle râ ham barrasi konid.

If you hear mû, also examine the verb’s person and the sentence context.

در فارسی ایرانی برای اول‌شخص جمع از «ما» استفاده می‌کنیم.

dar Fârsi-ye Irâni barâ-ye avval-shakhs-e jam' az «mâ» estefâde mi-konim.

In Iranian Persian, we use ما for the first-person plural.

Enclitics and number do not line up identically

Hazaragi personal suffixes reported in the literature include first-singular -um, second-singular -it, first-plural -mû, second-plural -tû, and third-person -(i)sh. One striking pattern is that third-singular and third-plural suffixes can share -(i)sh. Iranian Persian, by contrast, normally distinguishes ـش from ـشان.

For the Iranian inventory used in production, see The Six Pronominal Enclitics.

در فارسی ایرانی «کتابش» و «کتابشان» از نظر شمار متفاوت‌اند.

dar Fârsi-ye Irâni «ketâb-ash» va «ketâb-eshân» az nazar-e shomâr motefâvet-and.

In Iranian Persian, کتابش and کتابشان differ in number.

When one suffix covers both numbers, the discourse referent and wider context identify the intended number. This is systematic syncretism—two grammatical values sharing one form—not missing grammar.

Plurals and ezafe remain recognizable

Descriptions report general plural -o, historically related to Persian -hâ, and an animate plural , related to -ân. Dependent nouns and adjectives still follow the head through an ezafe-like -i. This gives an Iranian learner both an unfamiliar surface and a familiar structural template.

در فارسی ایرانی می‌گوییم «کتاب‌ها» و برای انسان هم اغلب «دانشجوها» طبیعی است.

dar Fârsi-ye Irâni mi-guyim «ketâb-hâ» va barâ-ye ensân ham aghlab «dâneshju-hâ» tabi'i ast.

In Iranian Persian we say کتاب‌ها, and for humans دانشجوها is also often natural.

Iranian Persian also has ـان, especially in formal or lexicalized human plurals, but it does not reproduce the same Hazaragi animate-plural distribution.

Particles reveal information structure

Hazaragi has particles reported as -khu for topical or contrastive highlighting and -di with predicate-related topical effects. It also commonly uses da in locative and some goal functions, where Iranian Persian distinguishes در “in” and به “to” more consistently. A comitative form transcribed qati means “with/together with” in many descriptions.

اگر «دا» پیش از مکان آمد، ممکن است نقش «در» یا «به» را داشته باشد.

agar «dâ» pish az makân âmad, momken ast naqsh-e «dar» yâ «be» râ dâshte bâshad.

If da occurs before a place, it may have the role of در or به.

در تولید فارسی ایرانی می‌گوییم «با دوستم رفتم»؛ صورت هزارگی را برای فهم گفتار می‌شناسیم.

dar tolid-e Fârsi-ye Irâni mi-guyim «bâ dust-am raftam»; surat-e Hazâragi râ barâ-ye fahm-e goftâr mi-shenâsim.

In Iranian Persian production we say ‘I went with my friend’; we recognize the Hazaragi form to understand speech.

Particles are especially easy to miss because they may be short and unstressed or because no single English word captures their discourse contribution. First ask whether a form marks topic, contrast, location, accompaniment, or modality.

Sound and contact layers

Hazaragi sound patterns include vowel and consonant correspondences distinct from both Tehran and Kabul norms. Contact vocabulary reflects long interaction with Mongolic, Turkic, and neighboring Afghan languages. A borrowed word can take fully Persian morphology, just as Persian-origin material can occur inside another language’s grammar.

Do not infer ancestry from one word. Shared vocabulary may result from contact, inheritance, schooling, or an individual speaker’s repertoire. Likewise, a feature documented in Bamiyan need not characterize a Hazara speaker raised in Kabul or Quetta.

این صورت در بامیان ثبت شده است، اما شاید در کابل رایج نباشد.

in surat dar Bâmiyân sabt shode ast, ammâ shâyad dar Kâbol râyej na-bâshad.

This form has been documented in Bamiyan, but it may not be common in Kabul.

Other Afghan Persian varieties

“Afghan Persian” includes more than Kabul Dari and Hazaragi. Herati speech has western geographic continuities; northeastern varieties can share features with Persian across the Tajikistan border; Aimaq and other communities have distinct local repertoires. Kabul itself contains speakers from across Afghanistan.

These labels operate at different scales: Dari can name a national standard, Kabuli a major urban variety, Herati a regional cluster, and Hazaragi an ethnolinguistically meaningful set of varieties. They should not be arranged on a ladder from correct to corrupt.

گویشور ممکن است برای یک موقعیت از چند گونه‌ی فارسی استفاده کند.

guyeshvar momken ast barâ-ye yek mowqe'iyyat az chand gune-ye Fârsi estefâde konad.

A speaker may use several varieties of Persian for one situation.

نام گونه را از خود گویشور می‌پرسم و برچسب دلخواه او را به کار می‌برم.

nâm-e gune râ az khod-e guyeshvar mi-porsam va bar-chasb-e del-khâh-e u râ be kâr mi-baram.

I ask the speaker what they call the variety and use their preferred label.

💡
Recognition is not impersonation. Learning that a particle or pronoun is valid helps comprehension; it does not license caricaturing the speaker’s accent.

Common Mistakes

1. Calling Hazaragi defective Dari

⚠️ هزارگی همان دری است که چند قاعده‌اش از بین رفته است.

Hazâragi hamân Dari ast ke chand qâ'ede-ash az beyn rafte ast.

Hazaragi is just Dari that has lost some rules. (a false deficit account)

✅ هزارگی الگوهای دستوری منظم و تاریخ زبانی خودش را دارد.

Hazâragi olgu-hâ-ye dasturi-ye monazzam va târikh-e zabâni-ye khod-ash râ dârad.

Hazaragi has regular grammatical patterns and its own linguistic history.

2. Mapping a pronoun by sound alone

⚠️ هر بار «ما» شنیدم، آن را جمع ترجمه کردم.

har bâr «mâ» shenidam, ân râ jam' tarjome kardam.

Every time I heard ma, I translated it as plural. (unsafe across Hazaragi and Iranian Persian)

✅ شخص فعل را بررسی کردم و فهمیدم ضمیر به یک نفر اشاره دارد.

shakhs-e fe'l râ barrasi kardam va fahmidam zamir be yek nafar eshâre dârad.

I checked the verb’s person and understood that the pronoun referred to one person.

3. Generalizing one locality to everyone

⚠️ این شکل را از یک نفر شنیدم، پس همه‌ی هزاره‌ها همین‌طور می‌گویند.

in shekl râ az yek nafar shenidam, pas hame-ye Hazâre-hâ hamin-towr mi-guyand.

I heard this form from one person, so all Hazaras say it this way. (an invalid generalization)

✅ این شکل را با نام گوینده، مکان و موقعیت گفتگو ثبت کردم.

in shekl râ bâ nâm-e guyande, makân va mowqe'iyyat-e goftogu sabt kardam.

I recorded this form together with the speaker, place, and conversational setting.

4. Mixing recognition items into Iranian production

⚠️ در فارسی ایرانی هر حرف اضافه‌ی محلی را بدون توجه به مخاطب به کار می‌برم.

dar Fârsi-ye Irâni har harf-e ezâfe-ye mahalli râ bedun-e tavajjoh be mokhâtab be kâr mi-baram.

In Iranian Persian I use every local preposition without considering the audience. (a register and variety mismatch)

✅ در تولید ایرانی از صورت معیار استفاده می‌کنم و شکل محلی را برای فهم گفتار می‌شناسم.

dar tolid-e Irâni az surat-e me'yâr estefâde mi-konam va shekl-e mahalli râ barâ-ye fahm-e goftâr mi-shenâsam.

In Iranian production I use the standard form and recognize the local form for understanding speech.

Key Takeaways

Iranian-target production rule: Produce Iranian pronouns, ـش/ـشان, در/به/با, ‌ها, and the Iranian tense system. In Hazaragi input, use the verb ending and context to identify unfamiliar pronouns and clitics, and treat short particles as meaningful grammatical material. Describe a documented form with its locality and register, never as a defect.
