Persian هیچ is best known before nouns—هیچ دانشجویی “no student”—but it can also function adverbially, intensifying a negative predicate: این کار هیچ آسان نیست “this is not at all easy.” In that use it does not stand for a missing noun and does not count participants. It lowers the degree of an adjective or the success of an event all the way to zero: “in no degree / in no way.”
Nominal هیچ participates in the wider system described on هیچکس and Negative Concord. This page isolates the adverbial use so the two structures are not mistaken for one another.
Adverbial هیچ remains available but is strongly register-sensitive. It is most secure in written Persian and established combinations such as هیچ معلوم نیست and هیچ بعید نیست; freer combinations can sound literary or bookish. Everyday Iranian conversation usually prefers اصلا “at all,” particularly before ordinary verbs.
Three uses that look alike

In the first sentence, removing دانشجویی leaves a different structure; هیچ belongs inside the subject noun phrase. In the second, هیچ modifies the degree of the predicate معلوم نیست. There is no understood “thing” after it.
Intensifying an adjective
Before an adjectival predicate, adverbial هیچ means “not at all” or “by no means.” This pattern is strongest in careful writing, argumentative prose, and a small group of frequent collocations.
پذیرفتن این شرطها هیچ منطقی نیست.
paziroftan-e in shart-hâ hich manteqi nist.
Accepting these conditions is not at all logical. (formal or literary; adjective scope)
رسیدن به توافق در این مرحله هیچ آسان نیست.
residan be tavâfoq dar in marhale hich âsân nist.

موفقیت این طرح هیچ بعید نیست.

The last sentence illustrates why two negative-looking elements do not always yield a plain positive paraphrase. Logically, “not at all unlikely” supports “quite possible,” but it is more cautious than حتما موفق میشود “it will definitely succeed.” هیچ intensifies the denial of unlikely; it does not create certainty.
Intensifying a verb or verbal predicate
Adverbial هیچ can also say that an event achieved no relevant degree or effect. This use is more marked than اصلا in contemporary casual speech, but it remains natural in careful narration and emphatic statements.
توضیح نهایی او هیچ قانعم نکرد.
towzih-e nahâyi-ye u hich qâne'-am na-kard.
His final explanation did not convince me at all. (formal or bookish; degree of effect)
با عوض کردن جای میزها، اتاق هیچ بزرگتر نشد.
bâ avaz kardan-e jâ-ye miz-hâ, otâq hich bozorg-tar na-shod.
Moving the desks around did not make the room any bigger at all. (neutral-careful; change-of-degree scope)
از لحن نامه هیچ خوشم نیامد.
az lahn-e nâme hich khosh-am na-yâmad.
I did not like the tone of the letter at all. (careful-spoken, somewhat marked today)
The negated predicate provides the licensing environment. In ordinary modern declaratives, an affirmative verb after adverbial هیچ is not the counterpart of English at all. Older literary Persian has additional positive, interrogative, and free-choice uses; they are not a productive model for present-day neutral statements.
Position reveals scope
Adverbial هیچ normally occurs close to the adjective or verbal predicate it scales. A preceding frame such as در عمل or برای من can restrict the evaluation.
این تغییر روی کاغذ جذاب است، اما در عمل هیچ کمکی نمیکند.
in taghyir ru-ye kâghaz jazzâb ast, ammâ dar amal hich komaki nemi-konad.
This change looks attractive on paper, but in practice it does not help at all. (formal-neutral; effect restricted to practice)
This sentence lies near the boundary between two analyses: هیچ can be heard as intensifying the entire light-verb predicate کمکی نمیکند, while هیچ کمکی also resembles the nominal “no help.” Such overlap is genuine. The clearest adverbial cases directly precede adjectives (هیچ آسان نیست) or predicates that do not need a noun (هیچ قانعم نکرد).
By contrast, هیچ تغییری نکرد straightforwardly contains the noun phrase هیچ تغییری “no change.” Do not label every pre-verbal هیچ an adverb solely because a verb follows somewhere later.
این بار توضیحات را سادهتر نوشتند، ولی متن هیچ روشنتر نشد.
in bâr towzihât râ sâde-tar neveshtand, vali matn hich rowshan-tar na-shod.
This time they wrote the explanations more simply, but the text did not become any clearer. (formal-neutral; scalar change)
هیچ versus اصلا and بههیچوجه
All three can strengthen negation, but they differ in distribution and tone.
- اصلا is the everyday default for “not at all” and freely modifies many predicates (neutral/informal).
- Adverbial هیچ is compact and often more written, especially before adjectives (careful-spoken/formal; sometimes literary).
- بههیچوجه means “in no way / under no circumstances” and sounds categorical (formal or strongly emphatic).
من اصلا از نسخهی جدید راضی نیستم.
man aslan az noskhe-ye jadid râzi nistam.
I’m not at all satisfied with the new version. (neutral everyday Persian)
این نتیجه بههیچوجه قابل قبول نیست.
in natije be-hich-vajh qâbel-e qabul nist.
This result is in no way acceptable. (formal, categorical)
These are register choices, not interchangeable spelling variants. Overusing adverbial هیچ in relaxed chat can make simple remarks sound bookish.
— نظر داور عوض شد؟ — نه، توضیحات تازه هیچ قانعش نکرد.
— nazar-e dâvar avaz shod? — na, towzihât-e tâze hich qâne'-ash na-kard.
— Did the reviewer change her mind? — No, the new explanations did not convince her at all. (careful-spoken dialogue)
Common Mistakes
1. Leaving the predicate affirmative
❌ این توضیح هیچ روشن است.
Incorrect in modern standard Persian for ‘not at all clear’ — adverbial هیچ requires a negative predicate here.
✅ نتیجهی این بررسی هیچ روشن نیست.
natije-ye in barrasi hich rowshan nist.
The result of this review is not at all clear.
2. Treating adverbial هیچ as the pronoun هیچچیز
❌ حرفش هیچچیز قانعم نکرد.
Incorrect for ‘did not convince me at all’ — هیچچیز is a nominal pronoun, not an intensifying adverb.

3. Adding nominal ـی to an adjective
❌ حل این مسئله هیچ آسانی نیست.
Incorrect for ‘not at all easy’ — آسان is an adjective here; آسانی would be the noun ‘ease.’

4. Using marked هیچ where neutral speech calls for اصلا
⚠️ من هیچ از این غذا خوشم نمیآید.

Grammatical but distinctly marked/bookish for an everyday preference.
✅ من اصلا از این غذا خوشم نمیآید.
