هرگز and هیچ‌وقت

Persian has two central ways to say “never”: هیچ‌وقت is the ordinary choice in conversation, while هرگز is stronger and more characteristic of careful speech and writing. Both normally belong to a negative clause: Persian says, in effect, “at no time I did not do it.” This is negative concord, not the logical cancellation associated with English double negatives.

The basic contrast

ExpressionUsual valueRegisterTypical pattern
هیچ‌وقتnever; not at any timeneutral; very common in conversationهیچ‌وقت + فعل منفی
هرگزnever, often categorical or emphaticcareful-spoken, formal, literaryهرگز + فعل منفی
هرگز و هرگزnever, ever; absolutely neveremphatic, often formal or dramaticهرگز و هرگز + فعل منفی

من هیچ‌وقت بدون صبحانه از خانه بیرون نمی‌روم.

man hich-vaqt bedun-e sobhâne az khâne birun nemi-ravam.

I never leave home without breakfast. (neutral everyday Persian)

این اطلاعات هرگز در اختیار شخص ثالث قرار نمی‌گیرد.

in ettelâ'ât harghez dar ekhtiyâr-e shakhs-e sâles qarâr nemi-girad.

This information is never made available to a third party. (formal policy language)

Both expressions exclude every relevant time. The difference is not mathematical: هرگز does not mean “more never.” It presents the denial as categorical and often sounds weightier. In relaxed Iranian conversation, هیچ‌وقت is normally the unmarked choice.

The verb normally remains negative

In an ordinary declarative, هیچ‌وقت and هرگز license—and normally require—negative morphology on the finite verb: نمی‌ـ in an imperfective present, نـ in a simple past, and negation within a perfect form. The time expression does not replace the verbal prefix.

ما هیچ‌وقت درباره‌ی حقوق همدیگر سؤال نمی‌کنیم.

mâ hich-vaqt darbâre-ye hoquq-e hamdigar so'âl nemi-konim.

We never ask each other about our salaries. (neutral standard; recurring conduct)

تا آن روز هرگز صدایش را نشنیده بودم.

tâ ân ruz harghez sedâ-yash râ na-shenide budam.

Until that day, I had never heard her voice. (careful narrative)

نرگس هیچ‌وقت قولی نداده که نتواند به آن عمل کند.

narges hich-vaqt qowli na-dâde ke na-tavânad be ân amal konad.

Narges has never made a promise that she could not keep. (careful spoken standard)

The last example contains two independent negations. هیچ‌وقت ... نداده gives “has never made,” while نتواند negates ability inside the relative clause. English speakers should identify which predicate each negative prefix belongs to instead of counting negative-looking words.

💡
Build the tense first, then negate it: می‌روم → نمی‌روم, دیدم → ندیدم, شنیده بودم → نشنیده بودم. Finally place هیچ‌وقت or هرگز in the clause. The time word never interrupts the verb’s prefix.

Position and information structure

The neutral position is after an overt subject and before the object or verb phrase: من هیچ‌وقت آنجا نمی‌روم. Clause-initial placement is also grammatical and gives the denial more discourse prominence. Immediately before the verb, the expression can contrast one habit with another.

هیچ‌وقت پیام‌های ناشناس را باز نکن.

hich-vaqt payâm-hâ-ye nâshenâs râ bâz na-kon.

Never open messages from unknown senders. (neutral warning)

هرگز چنین ادعایی نکرده‌ام.

harghez chonin edde'â-yi na-karde-am.

I have never made such a claim. (formal, emphatic denial)

The imperative above is a prohibition, but هیچ‌وقت contributes only the time span “on no occasion.” The negative imperative نکن supplies the prohibition. The general formation of negative commands belongs with verb mood, not with these adverbs.

Moving a phrase ahead of the never-expression sets a contrastive frame:

در محل کار هیچ‌وقت درباره‌ی سیاست بحث نمی‌کنم، اما با دوستانم گاهی حرف می‌زنم.

dar mahal-e kâr hich-vaqt darbâre-ye siyâsat bahs nemi-konam, ammâ bâ dustân-am gâhi harf mi-zanam.

At work I never discuss politics, but I sometimes talk about it with my friends. (neutral; restricted to a setting)

Here “never” has scope inside در محل کار: the speaker is not claiming never to discuss politics anywhere. Time and setting phrases therefore matter to the interpretation.

Emphatic هرگز

هرگز is common in firm promises, solemn denials, warnings, and elevated prose. Repetition as هرگز و هرگز intensifies the commitment; it is marked in ordinary chat and can sound theatrical unless the stakes justify it.

اعتماد شما را هرگز فراموش نخواهم کرد.

e'temâd-e shomâ râ harghez farâmush na-khâham kard.

I will never forget your trust. (formal or solemn)

من هرگز و هرگز نام منبع را فاش نمی‌کنم.

man harghez-o harghez nâm-e manba' râ fâsh nemi-konam.

I will never, ever reveal the source’s name. (strongly emphatic)

In the future example, negation attaches to خواهم, producing نخواهم کرد. Writing خواهم نکرد in this construction would misplace the ordinary future negation.

💡
Choose هیچ‌وقت for an unmarked report about habits or experience. Choose هرگز when the context is formal or when the speaker deliberately presents the denial as categorical.

Dialogue and colloquial use

Everyday Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran) keeps the spelling هیچ‌وقت, although surrounding words and verbs may be colloquial. It does not need an invented shortened spelling.

— تا حالا سفارشت رو اشتباه فرستادن؟ — نه، این فروشگاه هیچ‌وقت اشتباه نمی‌کنه.

— tâ hâlâ sefâresh-at ro eshtebâh ferestâdan? — na, in forushgâh hich-vaqt eshtebâh nemi-kone.

— Have they ever sent your order incorrectly? — No, this shop never makes mistakes. (informal, regional: Tehran)

The short answer نه rejects the question; هیچ‌وقت ... نمی‌کنه is the full negative-concord clause. Do not infer that نه itself is required alongside every never-expression.

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving the finite verb affirmative

❌ من هیچ‌وقت آن فایل را باز می‌کنم.

Incorrect for ‘I never open that file’ — this declarative needs verbal negation.

✅ من هیچ‌وقت پیوست‌های ناشناس را باز نمی‌کنم.

man hich-vaqt peyvast-hâ-ye nâshenâs râ bâz nemi-konam.

I never open attachments from unknown senders.

2. Reversing the negative and imperfective prefixes

❌ او هرگز دیر می‌نرسد.

Incorrect prefix order — ‘does not arrive’ is نمی‌رسد.

✅ او هیچ‌وقت برای جلسه دیر نمی‌رسد.

u hich-vaqt barâ-ye jalase dir nemi-resad.

She is never late for a meeting.

3. Writing هیچ‌وقت as an ordinary open phrase

❌ هیچ وقت حرفم را قطع نکن.

Incorrect house orthography — the lexical expression is written with a zero-width non-joiner: هیچ‌وقت.

✅ لطفا هیچ‌وقت وسط حرفم نپر.

lotfan hich-vaqt vasat-e harf-am na-par.

Please never interrupt me.

4. Confusing frequency with impossibility

⚠️ شاید هرگز نتوانم وارد شوم.

shâyad harghez na-tavânam vâred shavam.

Grammatical, but it predicts ‘perhaps I may never be able to enter,’ not merely inability on one occasion.

✅ شاید نتوانم از این ورودی داخل شوم.

shâyad na-tavânam az in vorudi dâkhel shavam.

I may not be able to enter through this entrance.

Key Takeaways

  • هیچ‌وقت is neutral and conversational; هرگز is more formal, categorical, or emphatic.
  • Ordinary declaratives retain negative morphology on the verb: هیچ‌وقت نمی‌روم, هرگز ندیده‌ام.
  • Position changes emphasis and scope, but not the need for verbal negation.
  • هرگز و هرگز is deliberately forceful, not the everyday default.
