Negative Raising and Polarity in Complex Clauses

In فکر نمی‌کنم که بیاید “I don't think he or she will come,” negation is grammatically attached to فکر می‌کنم but is usually interpreted inside the proposition: “I think that he or she will not come.” This mismatch is called negative raising. It is especially natural with weak belief predicates, where matrix negation also softens the speaker's commitment.

Negative raising is not automatic movement, and the two possible placements are not perfect synonyms. فکر نمی‌کنم بیاید presents a cautious rejection of a positive possibility; فکر می‌کنم نمی‌آید asserts a negative prediction more directly. Register, mood, prosody, and polarity items reveal the difference.

The central contrast

FormTypical interpretationComplement formPragmatic force
I do not believe that he or she will come; often, I believe that he or she will notsubjunctivecautious, softened
I believe that he or she will not comeindicativemore committed prediction
I do not know whether he or she is cominginterrogative alternativegenuine uncertainty; no raising
I do not want him or her to comesubjunctivedesire, not belief

English has the same familiar contrast between “I don't think she is coming” and “I think she isn't coming.” Persian likewise favors the matrix-negative version in polite disagreement, but Persian more clearly shows the nonasserted status of the complement through subjunctive

fekr nemi-konam in qatâr tâ sâ'at-e hasht be-rasad.

I don't think this train will arrive by eight. (neutral conversation; matrix negation and subjunctive complement)

fekr mi-konam in qatâr tâ sâ'at-e hasht nemi-rasad.

I think this train won't arrive by eight. (neutral; embedded negation and firmer prediction)

The first leaves more room for correction; the second commits the speaker to a negative timetable prediction. Neither construction mathematically entails the other in every context: not believing P can reflect insufficient evidence rather than belief in not-P.

💡
Use matrix فکر نمی‌کنم when rejecting a positive claim cautiously. Put negation in the complement when the negative proposition itself is what you affirm.

Why the complement tends toward the subjunctive

After matrix فکر نمی‌کنم, the complement is not presented as an established fact. Standard Persian therefore commonly uses the present subjunctive, especially for future, modal, or evaluative predicates.

fekr nemi-konam in râh-hal dar amal mo'asser bâshad.

I don't think this solution will be effective in practice. (formal-neutral; softened evaluation)

ba'id mi-dânam dowlat be-tavânad hazine râ dar yek sâl jobrân konad.

I consider it unlikely that the government can recover the cost within one year. (formal; negative-like evaluation licensing a subjunctive)

Colloquial Tehran Persian often omits که and reduces the matrix verb, but keeps the same scope contrast:

فکر نکنم امشب بیاد.

fekr na-konam emshab biyâd.

I don't think he'll come tonight. (informal, regional: Tehran; reduced matrix expression)

فکر نکنم is formally shaped like a subjunctive negative but functions as a conventional first-person hedge in speech. Formal prose prefers فکر نمی‌کنم که ... or a more impersonal expression such as بعید است که ....

Matrix negation is not always raised

Some contexts literally deny the act of thinking rather than the complement. Contrastive stress, correction, or a continuation can force that reading.

man fekr nemi-konam; mi-dânam ke in raqam eshtebâh ast.

I don't think it; I know that this figure is wrong. (contrastive; matrix negation is literal)

nemi-guyam ke gozâresh bi-arzesh ast; mi-guyam shavâhed-ash kâfi nist.

I am not saying the report is worthless; I am saying its evidence is insufficient. (formal; metalinguistic denial, not negative raising)

The continuation identifies what is denied: the speech act نمی‌گویم, not necessarily the truth of the embedded clause. Negative raising is strongest with gradable belief predicates such as فکر کردن and به نظر رسیدن, weaker or unavailable with factive knowledge and deliberate speech-act contrasts.

Polarity licensing across the clause boundary

Persian negative indefinites such as هیچ‌کس، هیچ‌چیز، هیچ‌وقت normally require a negative licensor. In a negative-raising environment, matrix negation can license an item inside the complement.

fekr nemi-konam hich-kas az in taghyir râzi bâshad.

I don't think anyone is satisfied with this change. (neutral formal; matrix negation licenses

fekr mi-konam hich-kas az in taghyir râzi nist.

I think nobody is satisfied with this change.

In the second pattern, positive matrix فکر می‌کنم cannot license هیچ‌کس by itself; embedded نیست does the work. The general concord system is explained on Negative Concord.

💡
Find the nearest semantic negation that takes scope over هیچ‌کس or هیچ‌چیز. A positive attitude verb does not make an embedded negative indefinite grammatical on its own.

Pragmatic softening in disagreement

Matrix negation is a common face-saving strategy. It directs the overt “no” toward the speaker's own belief state rather than bluntly labeling the other person's proposition false.

fekr nemi-konam in natije az dâde-hâ-ye mowjud be dast biyâyad.

I don't think this conclusion follows from the available data. (academic discussion; softened disagreement)

in natije az dâde-hâ-ye mowjud be dast nemi-âyad.

This conclusion does not follow from the available data. (academic; direct negative assertion)

Softening does not make a claim empty. The first sentence still challenges the inference, but explicitly locates the judgment with the speaker.

A short exchange

— be nazar-at tâ fardâ tamâm mi-shavad? — fekr nemi-konam; hanuz hich-kas bakhsh-e âkhar râ barrasi na-karde ast.

— Do you think it will be finished by tomorrow? — I don't think so; nobody has reviewed the last section yet. (neutral workplace conversation)

Common Mistakes

1. Negating both clauses mechanically

Incorrect — the embedded indicative and subjunctive copula are stacked, and negation is duplicated without a coherent scope.

fekr nemi-konam u emruz be jalase biyâyad.

I don't think he will come to the meeting today.

2. Using an indicative where a nonasserted complement needs the subjunctive

Incorrect — است and باشد cannot both close one predicate.

fekr nemi-konam in pishnehâd barâ-ye hame amali bâshad.

I don't think this proposal is practical for everyone.

3. Leaving هیچ‌کس without a licensor

Incorrect for ‘I think nobody is satisfied’ — positive فکر می‌کنم does not license هیچ‌کس.

fekr mi-konam hich-kas az natije-ye nehâyi râzi nist.

I think nobody is satisfied with the final result.

4. Treating a softened claim as uncertainty about everything

Incorrect — شاید and حتما assign incompatible strength to the same proposition.

fekr nemi-konam in edde'â bâ shavâhed-e fe'li sâzgâr bâshad.

I don't think this claim is compatible with the current evidence.

Key Takeaways

  • فکر نمی‌کنم بیاید often conveys a cautious belief that the person will not come, but can also mean simple absence of a positive belief.
  • Matrix negation plus a subjunctive complement is softer than a direct embedded negative assertion.
  • Literal matrix denial remains possible when contrast or continuation targets the thinking or saying act itself.
  • Negative raising can license هیچ‌کس inside the complement; a positive matrix needs embedded negation.
  • Mood, polarity, and discourse context jointly reveal scope.
