A persuasive Persian argument keeps three things distinct: whose judgment is being voiced, what evidence supports it, and how strongly the speaker commits to it. Treating all three as interchangeable translations of English I think makes an argument sound either unsupported or stronger than its evidence allows.
For broader communicative organization, see Expressing Opinions and Stance.
The Argument Map
| Frame | Function | Typical continuation | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| identify the speaker’s assessment | independent clause | neutral; formal-neutral |
| same stance with a pronominal clitic | independent clause | neutral speech and writing |
| با X موافق/مخالف بودن | align with or oppose a proposal/person | با phrase; sometimes که clause | neutral |
| present X as evidence | indicative که clause | formal, academic |
| دلیل آوردن | supply reasons for a claim | برای claim; در حمایت از position | formal-neutral |
| present an inference cautiously | finite که clause | formal-neutral, academic |
The central structural principle is a division of labor. A stance phrase locates responsibility for a judgment; an evidence predicate relates observations to a conclusion; a hedge calibrates certainty. Good argumentation can combine them, but each should still have a clear job.
Naming the Viewpoint
به نظر من normally stands before the proposition and is often followed by a comma in edited prose. It does not take که. The shorter به نظرم contains the first-person clitic ـم and is common in conversation as well as informal and neutral writing.
be nazar-e man, behtar ast budje râ ru-ye âmuzesh-e kârkonân motamarkez konim.
In my view, we should focus the budget on staff training. (formal-neutral)
be nazar-am in masir khalvat-tare; az hamin-jâ berim.
I think this route is less busy; let’s go this way. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Initial position makes the argumentative status especially clear. Compare the bare assertion with the marked judgment:
این برنامه عملی نیست.
in barnâme amali nist.
This plan is not workable. (unqualified assertion)
in barnâme, dast-kam dar sharâyet-e fe'li, be nazar-e man amali nist.
This plan, at least under present conditions, is not workable in my view. (formal-neutral, qualified)
The person who agrees or disagrees is subject. The proposal, person, or position being evaluated is normally introduced by English agree with happens to offer a useful parallel, but English oppose something is transitive; Persian still says با چیزی مخالف بودن, without را.
man bâ asl-e pishnehâd movâfeq-am, ammâ bâ zamân-e ejrâ-ye ân mokhâlef-am.
I agree with the proposal in principle, but I oppose its implementation schedule. (formal-neutral)
hame movâfeq budand ke jalase yek hafte aqab bioftad.
Everyone agreed that the meeting should be postponed by one week. (neutral; agreed proposal in a که clause)
dar mored-e hazine-hâ bâ shomâ movâfeq-am, vali darbâre-ye zamân-bandi hanuz qâne' na-shode-am.
I agree with you about the costs, but I am not yet convinced about the schedule. (formal polite)
Making Evidence the Subject
P means that evidence X supports conclusion P. The evidence is grammatical subject; the conclusion follows in a finite که clause.
natâyij-e in pazhuhesh neshân mi-dahad ke khâb-e kâfi bar hâfeze ta'sir mi-gozârad.
The results of this study show that sufficient sleep affects memory. (academic)
payâm-hâ-ye sabt-shode neshân dâdand ke moshkel az ruz-e qabl shoru' shode bud.
The recorded messages showed that the problem had begun the previous day. (formal-neutral; individuated pieces of evidence)
Do not use نشان دادن as “say.” An unsupported personal assertion is better introduced by فکر میکنم or به نظر من.
Supplying Reasons
برای ادعایی دلیل آوردن means “give a reason/argument for a claim.” The reason itself can appear as a quoted proposition or be elaborated in the following discourse. In spontaneous speech, دلیلش اینه که... is often more natural than repeatedly saying دلیل آوردن.
nevisande barâ-ye in edde'â se dalil-e moshakhkhas mi-âvarad.
The author gives three specific reasons for this claim. (academic)
faqat mokhâlefat na-kon; barâ-ye nazar-at dalil biyâvar.
Don’t just object; give a reason for your view. (neutral direct instruction)
dalil-e man in ast ke noskhe-ye fe'li hanuz âzmâyesh na-shode ast.
My reason is that the current version has not yet been tested. (formal-neutral)
The که clause supplies propositional content; choose tense for the situation itself.
Hedging the Strength of a Claim
A hedge marks the evidential or scalar limits of a responsible claim. به نظر میرسد که presents an inference, احتمالا marks probability, تا حدی limits degree, and میتوان گفت که frames a defensible formulation rather than an absolute fact.
be nazar mi-resad ke kâhesh-e forush movaqqati bâshad.
It appears that the decline in sales may be temporary. (formal-neutral inference)
in tafâvot ehtemâlan be ravesh-e nemune-giri marbut ast.
This difference is probably related to the sampling method. (academic)
mi-tavân goft ke tarh tâ haddi movaffaq bude, ammâ hanuz kâmel nist.
One can say that the plan has been somewhat successful, but it is not yet complete. (academic, calibrated)
Stacking several hedges can become evasive. One precise limiter is usually stronger than a chain such as
A Short Argument in Context
be nazar-e man, na-bâyad hanuz tarh râ motavaqqef konim. âmâr-e in mâh neshân mi-dahad ke te'dâd-e kârbarân-e tâze bishtar shode ast. albatte hazine-hâ ham bâlâ rafte, banâbar-in tâ haddi bâ nazar-e shomâ movâfeq-am; ammâ barâ-ye tavaqof-e kâmel dalil-e kâfi na-dârim.
In my view, we should not stop the plan yet. This month’s figures show that the number of new users has increased. Of course, costs have also risen, so I agree with your view to some extent; but we do not have sufficient reason for a complete halt. (formal meeting register)
The paragraph moves from owned opinion to evidence, concession, partial alignment, and conclusion. The frames organize relations between claims instead of merely decorating sentences.
Common Mistakes
1. Translating “in my opinion” without به نظر
Incorrect — Persian needs the frame به نظر من or a finite predicate such as فکر میکنم.
be nazar-e man, in tarh hanuz amali nist.
In my view, this plan is not yet workable.
Incorrect — the position evaluated by موافق بودن is normally introduced with با.
bâ in pishnehâd movâfeq-am, be sharti ke hazine-ash kam-tar shavad.
I agree with this proposal, provided its cost is reduced.
3. Using نشان دادن for an unsupported opinion
Sârâ bedun-e erâ'e-ye hich shâhedi goft nazar-ash neshân mi-dahad ke tarh shekast mi-khorad.
Sara said, without presenting any evidence, that her opinion shows the plan will fail. Grammatical, but نشان دادن overstates an unsupported view.
Sârâ goft be nazar-ash tarh shekast mi-khorad, ammâ hanuz shâhedi erâ'e na-kard.
Sara said that in her view the plan would fail, but she had not yet presented evidence.
4. Piling up hedges instead of choosing one
shâyad betavân tâ haddi goft ke ehtemâlan natije dorost ast.
Perhaps one can say to some extent that the result is probably correct. Grammatical, but the stacked hedges obscure the intended degree of commitment.
ehtemâlan natije dorost ast, ammâ dâde-hâ-ye bishtari lâzem dârim.
The result is probably correct, but we need more data.
Key Takeaways
- Use به نظر من/به نظرم to identify a viewpoint, not to present evidence.
- موافق and مخالف normally select a با phrase; a following که clause can state the agreed proposal.
P, X is evidence and P is the supported conclusion.
- دلیل آوردن supplies support; hedges such as احتمالا and تا حدی calibrate exactly how much the support licenses.
- Strong Persian argumentation makes responsibility, evidence, and certainty separately visible.
