English need, can, know how, and may are short, but Persian divides their meanings among several frames. نیاز داشتن به says that a person or project requires something. لازم بودن presents a thing or action as necessary. بلد بودن describes learned know-how, توانستن describes ability or possibility, and اجازه داشتن says that permission exists.
The decisive question is not “Which Persian word translates can?” Ask what kind of relation is meant: requirement, practical skill, circumstantial capacity, or social authorization. Then use that predicate's own complement pattern.

A Need-Holder Requires Something
نیاز داشتن is a compound verb. The person, organization, or task with the need is its subject; what is needed normally follows به. Only داشتن carries person and tense.
barâ-ye safar be gozarnâme niyâz dâram.
I need a passport for the trip. (neutral standard)
in giyâh be nur-e bishtari niyâz dârad.
This plant needs more light. (neutral)
barâ-ye in kâr be komak-e shomâ niyâz dârim.
We need your help with this task. (polite neutral)
The purpose phrase with برای and the needed item with به can coexist. In برای سفر به گذرنامه نیاز دارم, برای سفر answers “for what purpose?”, while به گذرنامه identifies the requirement.
Conversational چیزی لازم داشتن is also common when a person needs a concrete item: چی لازم داری؟ “What do you need?” It takes a direct object and must not be confused with به چیزی نیاز داشتن, whose به is part of the predicate. The stable neutral-to-formal frame is نیاز داشتن به.
Presenting a Requirement
لازم بودن shifts attention from the need-holder to the required item or action. A noun can be predicated as necessary—کارت شناسایی لازم است—or impersonal لازم است can introduce a subjunctive action. Persian has no dummy it before this frame.
barâ-ye vorud kârt-e shenâsâyi lâzem ast.
Identification is required for entry. (formal-neutral)
lâzem ast pish az sâ'at-e shesh be-resim.
We need to arrive before six. (neutral; impersonal necessity plus subjunctive)
lâzem nist hamin alân javâb bedahi.
You don't need to answer right now. (neutral; absence of necessity)
Negative لازم نیست بروی means “you need not go,” not “you must not go.” To prohibit an action, use a negative imperative or another prohibition frame. The complete modal syntax appears on لازم است and بهتر است.
Learned Know-How
بلد بودن says that someone has learned or knows how to perform a skill, route, language, game, or practical procedure. It is common in speech and neutral prose. The known skill may be a noun-like activity (شنا، رانندگی، آشپزی) or a finite action whose subject matches the person who is بلد.
khâhar-am rânandegi balad ast.
My sister knows how to drive. (neutral; learned skill)
baladi bâ in dastgâh kâr koni?
Do you know how to use this device? (neutral everyday singular)
masir ro balad nistam; naqshe ro bâz kon.
I don't know the route; open the map. (informal Iranian; knowledge of a route)
English uses know for both facts and skills. Persian normally uses دانستن for propositional knowledge—میدانم جلسه کجاست—but بلد بودن for practical command of an activity or route. Saying فارسی بلدم means “I know/can speak Persian,” not “I know a fact about Persian.”
Capacity and Opportunity
Personal توانستن takes a finite present-subjunctive complement: میتوانم بیایم، میتوانی بخوانی. It can describe physical or mental ability, available time, external possibility, or successful opportunity. It does not prove that the skill was learned.
mi-tavânam in ja'be râ tanhâyi boland konam.
I can lift this box by myself. (neutral standard; physical capacity)
emruz nemi-tavânim bishtar be-mânim.
We can't stay longer today. (neutral; circumstantial limitation)
agar internet vasl shavad, mi-tavânid form râ be-ferestid.
If the internet connects, you can send the form. (polite standard; practical possibility)
Tehran speech has میتونم، میتونی، میتونه (informal, regional: Tehran). Standard writing uses میتوانم. For past contrasts and the impersonal formal construction, see توانستن: to Be Able.
fardâ asr mi-tunam biyâm.
I can come tomorrow afternoon. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Authorization
اجازه داشتن says that a person has permission. The permitted action is normally a finite subjunctive clause with the same subject: اجازه دارم وارد شوم. A noun can instead follow ezafe: اجازهی ورود داشتن “have entry permission.”
ejâze dârid injâ pârk konid?
Are you allowed to park here? (polite neutral)
dâneshju-yân ejâze na-dârand vâred-e in otâq shavand.
Students are not allowed to enter this room. (formal-neutral rule)
faqat kârkonân ejâze-ye vorud dârand.
Only staff have permission to enter. (formal notice style)
To ask permission in everyday interaction, میتوانم ...؟ is often more natural and less legalistic than اجازه دارم ...؟. The latter asks whether authorization already exists; اجازه میدهید ...؟ asks the addressee to grant it.
mi-tavânam panjare râ bâz konam?
May I open the window? (polite everyday request for permission)
ejâze mi-dahid yek so'âl be-porsam?
May I ask a question? (polite; requesting authorization from the addressee)
The fuller contrast between possessing and granting permission appears on Permission with اجازه دادن and داشتن.
Contrasting the Same Activity
shenâ balad-am, vali emruz nemi-tavânam shenâ konam chun dast-am dard mi-konad.
I know how to swim, but I can't swim today because my arm hurts. (skill versus current capacity)
shenâ balad-am va mi-tavânam shenâ konam, ammâ injâ ejâze na-dâram vâred-e âb shavam.
I know how to swim and am able to, but I'm not allowed to enter the water here. (skill, capacity, and permission contrasted)
A Short Dialogue
— barâ-ye sabt-nâm chi lâzem dâram? — be kârt-e shenâsâyi niyâz dâri. — mi-tunam interneti sabt-nâm konam? — âre, vali bâyad balad bâshi bâ emzâ-ye dijitâl kâr koni.
— What do I need to register? — You need identification. — Can I register online? — Yes, but you need to know how to use a digital signature. (informal Iranian)
In the opening question , colloquial لازم داشتن asks what item is needed. The answer switches to canonical به ... This is natural variation, but it does not erase the formal valency of نیاز داشتن به.
Common Mistakes
Malformed in the canonical نیاز داشتن frame — the needed item must follow به.
man be yek ruz-e bishtar niyâz dâram.
I need one more day.
2. Adding an English dummy subject to لازم است
Do not add a dummy آن corresponding to English it. Impersonal لازم است begins directly with the necessity predicate:
✅ لازم است زود حرکت کنیم.
lâzem ast zud harekat konim.
We need to leave early.
3. Following توانستن with an infinitive
Malformed — personal توانستن takes a finite subjunctive complement.
mi-tavânam fardâ ba'd az kâr biyâyam.
I can come tomorrow after work.
4. Copying an incomplete English “know how” frame
Malformed English transfer — چطور introduces an incomplete clause here; everyday practical know-how uses بلد بودن.
man rânandegi balad hastam.
I know how to drive.
5. Confusing inability with lack of permission
emruz nemi-tavânam vâred-e âzmâyeshgâh shavam.
I can't enter the laboratory today. Grammatical, but ambiguous between practical impossibility and denied permission.
emruz ejâze na-dâram vâred-e âzmâyeshgâh shavam.
I am not allowed to enter the laboratory today. (explicit lack of permission)

- بلد بودن is learned practical know-how; توانستن is capacity, opportunity, or possibility.
؟ is a common polite permission request.
- Personal توانستن and اجازه داشتن, as well as impersonal لازم است, take finite subjunctive action complements, not English-style infinitives.
