لازم است and بهتر است

لازم است “it is necessary” presents an action as required; بهتر است “it is better” recommends one option over another. Both are impersonal evaluative predicates followed by a finite subjunctive clause: لازم است بروید, بهتر است صبر کنیم. The embedded verb supplies the person and number that English often places in a for ... to phrase.

These expressions overlap with باید, but they organize the message differently. باید directly imposes an obligation, لازم است frames something as a necessity, and بهتر است evaluates it as the preferable course.

لازم است: presenting a necessity

The common frame is لازم است (که) + subjunctive. The copula است agrees with no participant because the whole expression is impersonal. The subject of the required action belongs inside the complement and controls its own ending.

لازم است فرم را پیش از مصاحبه تکمیل کنید.

lâzem ast form râ pish az mosâhebe takmil konid.

You need to complete the form before the interview. (formal-neutral instruction; که omitted)

لازم است که همه‌ی اعضا ساعت نه حاضر باشند.

lâzem ast ke hame-ye a'zâ sâ'at-e noh hâzer bâshand.

It is necessary for all members to be present at nine. (formal; explicit که and overt embedded subject)

برای تمدید قرارداد لازم است صاحب‌خانه هم امضا کند.

barâ-ye tamdid-e qarârdâd lâzem ast sâheb-khâne ham emzâ konad.

For the contract to be renewed, the landlord also needs to sign. (formal-neutral; third-person subject)

An overt شما or noun is useful when the ending alone would not make the intended person sufficiently clear. Persian has no dummy counterpart of English it before لازم است.

💡
Ask “what is necessary?” The answer is an entire finite clause. In لازم است او بیاید, او is the subject of بیاید, not an object of لازم است.

بهتر است: recommending the preferable option

بهتر است (که) + subjunctive advises without presenting the recommendation as an absolute rule. It is especially useful when a direct باید might sound too commanding.

بهتر است قبل از خرید اندازه‌ها را دوباره بررسی کنی.

behtar ast qabl az kharid andâze-hâ râ dubâre barrasi koni.

You'd better check the measurements again before buying. (neutral advice)

بهتر است که درباره‌ی این موضوع جلوی بچه‌ها صحبت نکنیم.

behtar ast ke darbâre-ye in mowzu' jelow-e bachche-hâ sohbat na-konim.

It would be better not to discuss this in front of the children. (neutral tactful advice; explicit که)

هوا کم‌کم تاریک می‌شود؛ بهتر است از مسیر اصلی برگردیم.

havâ kam-kam târik mi-shavad; behtar ast az masir-e asli bar-gardim.

It's getting dark; we'd better return by the main road. (neutral conversation)

In English, had better can carry a sharp warning. Persian بهتر است ranges from calm advice to a warning depending on context and tone; the words themselves do not automatically imply a threat.

Optional که and subject placement

که explicitly announces the complement but is not required. Short everyday complements favor omission: بهتر است برویم. Formal writing and longer clauses often retain it: لازم است که متقاضی مدارک را ارسال کند. Neither choice changes the mood of the dependent verb.

FrameNatural exampleWhy choose it?

بهتر است شما اول نظرتان را بگویید.

behtar ast shomâ avval nazar-etân râ beguyid.

It would be better for you to give your opinion first. (polite standard; contrastive embedded subject)

English for you to go does not translate word for word. Persian puts شما directly in the subordinate clause and lets بروید agree with it. The subject may be omitted when obvious: بهتر است بروید.

Comparing strength with باید

The three expressions form a useful pragmatic scale, but not a rigid hierarchy. A legal requirement stated with لازم است can be stronger than friendly باید, while intonation can make any direct address firmer.

برای ورود به آزمایشگاه لازم است عینک ایمنی بزنید.

barâ-ye vorud be âzmâyeshgâh lâzem ast eynak-e imeni bezanid.

To enter the laboratory, you are required to put on safety glasses. (formal requirement)

بهتر است برای این سفر کفش راحت برداری.

behtar ast barâ-ye in safar kafsh-e râhat bar-dâri.

You should take comfortable shoes for this trip. (neutral recommendation)

As a practical choice, use لازم است for procedures and objective conditions, بهتر است for advice, and باید when directly expressing what someone must or should do. See باید plus Subjunctive for its broader range.

Negation and its scope

Negating the matrix predicate cancels necessity: لازم نیست بیایی means “you do not need to come.” Keeping لازم است positive and negating the embedded verb requires non-action: لازم است وارد نشوید means “it is necessary that you not enter.”

اگر نسخه‌ی دیجیتال را فرستاده‌اید، لازم نیست اصل نامه را بیاورید.

agar noskhe-ye dijitâl râ ferestâde-id, lâzem nist asl-e nâme râ biyâvarid.

If you have sent the digital copy, you do not need to bring the original letter. (formal-neutral; no necessity)

لازم است تا خشک شدن رنگ به دیوار دست نزنید.

lâzem ast tâ khoshk shodan-e rang be divâr dast na-zanid.

You must not touch the wall until the paint dries. (formal instruction; required non-action)

With بهتر است, embedded negation is ordinary negative advice: بهتر است نروی “you had better not go.” Matrix-negative بهتر نیست...؟ often forms a consultative question: “Wouldn't it be better...?”

بهتر نیست قبل از تصمیم نهایی با وکیل صحبت کنیم؟

behtar nist qabl az tasmim-e nehâyi bâ vakil sohbat konim?

Wouldn't it be better to speak with a lawyer before the final decision? (neutral consultative question)

💡
Negation before است changes the evaluation: “not necessary” or “isn't it better?” Negation on the subjunctive changes the recommended or required event itself.

Formal and conversational forms

The full forms لازم است، بهتر است are standard in writing and careful speech. Tehran conversation (informal, regional: Tehran) commonly uses لازمه، بهتره and reduced subjunctives. The shorter copula does not change complement structure.

لازمه فردا اصل کارت رو بیاری، ولی بهتره یه کپی هم داشته باشی.

lâzeme fardâ asl-e kârt ro biyâri, vali behtare ye kopi ham dâshte bâshi.

You need to bring the original card tomorrow, but you'd better have a copy too. (informal, regional: Tehran)

Common Mistakes

1. Adding a dummy آن

❌ آن لازم است که زود برویم.

as English dummy ‘it is necessary’

Incorrect — impersonal لازم است needs no dummy pronoun.

✅ لازم است پیش از ساعت پنج حرکت کنیم.

lâzem ast pish az sâ'at-e panj harekat konim.

We need to leave before five.

2. Using an infinitive instead of a finite complement

❌ بهتر است زود خوابیدن.

Incorrect — advice about a person's action takes a subjunctive with agreement.

✅ بهتر است امشب کمی زودتر بخوابی.

behtar ast emshab kami zud-tar be-khâbi.

It is better for you to go to sleep a little earlier tonight.

3. Marking the embedded subject with را

❌ لازم است کارشناس را گزارش را ببیند.

Incorrect — کارشناس is the subject of ببیند and takes no را; only the specific object گزارش takes را.

✅ لازم است کارشناس گزارش را پیش از انتشار ببیند.

lâzem ast kârshenâs gozâresh râ pish az enteshâr bebinad.

The specialist needs to see the report before publication.

4. Using نباید for lack of necessity

❌ نباید فردا سر کار بیایی.

as ‘you don't have to come to work tomorrow’

Incorrect for that meaning — the grammatical sentence prohibits coming.

✅ فردا لازم نیست سر کار بیایی.

fardâ lâzem nist sar-e kâr biyâyi.

You don't have to come to work tomorrow.

Key Takeaways

  • لازم است frames a requirement; بهتر است recommends a preferable course.
  • Both take a finite subjunctive, with optional که and an independently expressed embedded subject.
  • Short complements commonly omit که; long or formal clauses often retain it.
  • لازم نیست بیایی removes necessity; لازم است نیایی requires non-arrival.
  • Standard لازم است / بهتر است correspond to colloquial Tehran لازمه / بهتره.
