Taʿârof formulas cannot be decoded from dictionary meanings alone. قابل ندارد literally says that something “has no worth” relative to the addressee, yet a shopkeeper may use it while still expecting payment. اختیار دارید literally grants authority but often rejects excessive thanks or self-deprecation. زحمت کشیدید acknowledges effort, and بفرمایید coordinates movement, speech, eating, taking, or service according to the visible situation.
The grammar is conventional; the action is contextual. Competent interpretation therefore combines the formula, speaker roles, setting, gesture, repetition, and whether the transaction has actually been resolved.
Formula-to-Script Map
| Formula | Literal image | Common social action | Safe response |
|---|---|---|---|
| قابل ندارد | it is not worthy | downplay price/gift/value | thank, then clarify payment |
| اختیار دارید | you have authority | not at all; don't say that | brief thanks or return formula |
| زحمت کشیدید | you exerted yourself | thank for effort, visit, or service | خواهش میکنم / کاری نکردم |
| بفرمایید | please command/say | go ahead, come in, take, eat, speak | perform invited action or clarify |
قابل ندارد: Value Is Downplayed
The subject is the item, service, or amount being downplayed. Full قابل شما را ندارد means roughly “It is not worthy of you”; shorter قابل ندارد is conventional in commerce and gift exchange (polite conversational). The formula elevates the addressee by rhetorically lowering the object's value.
— قیمت این دفتر چقدر میشود؟ — قابل ندارد.
— qeymat-e in daftar cheqadar mi-shavad? — qâbel na-dârad.
— How much is this notebook? — It's not worthy of you. (polite commercial taʿârof; price is not yet resolved)
— خیلی لطف کردید. — قابل شما را ندارد.
— kheyli lotf kardid. — qâbel-e shomâ râ na-dârad.
— That's very kind of you. — It isn't worthy of you. (polite gift formula)
In Tehran speech the longer form commonly becomes قابل شما رو نداره (informal-polite, regional: Tehran). The colloquial morphology does not make the respect insincere.
ممنونم، ولی لطفا قیمتش رو بگین؛ حتما حساب میکنم.
mamnun-am, vali lotfan qeymat-esh ro begin; hatman hesâb mi-konam.
Thank you, but please tell me the price; I will definitely pay. (safe polite Tehran response)
That answer acknowledges the relational move and separately resolves the practical one. If the speaker clearly repeats that the item is a gift—این هدیه است، واقعا پولی نیست—accepting may then be appropriate.
اختیار دارید: Rejecting Excessive Deference
اختیار دارید literally means “you have authority/choice.” As a taʿârof response it often means “Not at all,” “Please don't say that,” or “You are too kind.” It can answer an apology, thanks, or self-lowering remark. Literal permission remains possible in another context, so intonation and topic matter.
— ببخشید که وقتتان را گرفتم. — اختیار دارید، خوشحال شدم.
— bebakhshid ke vaqt-etân râ gereftam. — ekhtiyâr dârid, khoshhâl shodam.
— Sorry for taking your time. — Not at all; I was glad to help. (polite)
— من که کاری نکردم. — اختیار دارید؛ خیلی کمک کردید.
— man ke kâri na-kardam. — ekhtiyâr dârid; kheyli komak kardid.
— I didn't do anything. — Oh, not at all; you helped a great deal. (mutual politeness)
انتخاب با شماست؛ اختیار دارید هر کدام را بردارید.
entekhâb bâ shomâ-st; ekhtiyâr dârid har kodâm râ bar-dârid.
The choice is yours; you may take either one. (literal authority/choice, not merely taʿârof)
The third sentence proves that formula status does not erase composition. When an explicit action follows, اختیار دارید can retain genuine permission.
زحمت کشیدید: Naming the Other Person's Effort
زحمت کشیدن literally means “exert oneself / go to trouble.” Second-person زحمت کشیدید thanks someone for visiting, bringing something, completing work, or taking extra trouble. It can be sincere gratitude without a hidden refusal.
خیلی زحمت کشیدید که تا فرودگاه آمدید.
kheyli zahmat keshidid ke tâ forudgâh âmadid.
It was very kind of you to come all the way to the airport. (polite gratitude)
دست شما درد نکند؛ برای این گزارش خیلی زحمت کشیدید.
dast-e shomâ dard na-konad; barâ-ye in gozâresh kheyli zahmat keshidid.
Thank you; you put a lot of work into this report. (polite appreciation)
— زحمت کشیدید. — خواهش میکنم، کاری نکردم.
— zahmat keshidid. — khâhesh mi-konam, kâri na-kardam.
— Thank you for taking the trouble. — You're welcome; it was nothing. (conventional modest response)
In Tehran conversation, زحمت کشیدین is polite despite its colloquial ـین ending (informal-polite, regional: Tehran). Formal writing retains کشیدید.
بفرمایید: Gesture Completes the Meaning
بفرمایید is an honorific imperative historically related to فرمودن, but modern usage is a flexible polite prompt. By a doorway it means “Please come in/go ahead”; beside food, “Please have some”; when handing an object, “Here you are”; after بله؟, “Go ahead, speak.” Its direct object is often omitted because the scene supplies it.
در باز است، بفرمایید داخل.
dar bâz ast, befarmâyid dâkhel.
The door is open; please come in. (polite invitation to move)
بفرمایید، این هم رسید شما.
befarmâyid, in ham resid-e shomâ.
Here you are; this is your receipt. (polite handover)
میوه بفرمایید؛ تازه است.
mive befarmâyid; tâze ast.
Please have some fruit; it's fresh. (polite hosting)
— ببخشید، یک سؤال داشتم. — بله، بفرمایید.
— bebakhshid, yek so'âl dâshtam. — bale, befarmâyid.
— Excuse me, I had a question. — Yes, go ahead. (polite permission to speak)
Singular بفرما is appropriate with a close equal or someone younger; بفرمایید is the safer default with strangers. Colloquial polite بفرمایین is common in Tehran.
بفرمایین بشینین؛ چای الان آماده میشه.
befarmâyin beshinin; chây alân âmâde mishe.
Please sit down; the tea will be ready shortly. (informal-polite, regional: Tehran)
The Offer–Refusal–Renewal Sequence
Many taʿârof exchanges unfold across turns: an offer protects the guest's welcome; a first refusal protects the host from imposition; a renewed offer clarifies willingness. There is no universal rule to refuse exactly three times. Urgency, relationship, cost, and nonverbal behavior determine when the action is settled.
— شام بمانید. — خیلی ممنون، مزاحم نمیشوم. — چه مزاحمتی؟ حتما بمانید. — اگر زحمتی نیست، با کمال میل.
— shâm be-mânid. — kheyli mamnun, mozâhem nemi-shavam. — che mozâhemati? hatman be-mânid. — agar zahmati nist, bâ kamâl-e meyl.
— Stay for dinner. — Thank you, I won't impose. — What imposition? Please do stay. — If it isn't trouble, gladly. (polite hosting script)
The first refusal is valid language but not necessarily a final rejection. Conversely, a safety instruction, medical restriction, or time-sensitive “no” must be treated literally. Taʿârof never licenses ignoring clear boundaries.
Safe Clarification
When material cost, dietary needs, timing, or consent matters, respectful clarification is more competent than guessing. Acknowledge the formula, then ask a concrete question.
خیلی ممنون؛ فقط برای اطمینان، این هدیه است یا باید حساب کنم؟
kheyli mamnun; faqat barâ-ye etminân, in hediye ast yâ bâyad hesâb konam?
Thank you; just to make sure, is this a gift, or should I pay? (polite explicit clarification)
ببخشید، منظورتان این است که الان وارد شوم؟
bebakhshid, manzur-etân in ast ke alân vâred shavam?
Excuse me, do you mean that I should go in now? (polite clarification of بفرمایید)
The broader turn-taking system appears on Taʿârof as a Pragmatic System.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating قابل ندارد as a confirmed zero price
⚠️ فروشنده گفت قابل ندارد، پس بدون پرداخت رفتم.
forushande goft qâbel na-dârad, pas bedun-e pardâkht raftam.
The seller said ‘It's not worthy of you,’ so I left without paying. Grammatical, but culturally unsafe unless the gift was explicitly confirmed.
✅ تشکر کردم و دوباره قیمت را پرسیدم.
tashakkor kardam va do-bâre qeymat râ porsidam.
I thanked the seller and asked the price again.
2. Translating اختیار دارید only as legal permission
⚠️ وقتی گفت اختیار دارید، فکر کردم دربارهی اختیار قانونی صحبت میکند.
vaqti goft ekhtiyâr dârid, fekr kardam darbâre-ye ekhtiyâr-e qânuni sohbat mi-konad.
When he/she said ekhtiyâr dârid, I thought it referred to legal authority. Grammatical, but it misses the conventional ‘not at all’ reading in a politeness exchange.
✅ اختیار دارید؛ کمک به شما زحمتی نبود.
ekhtiyâr dârid; komak be shomâ zahmati na-bud.
Not at all; helping you was no trouble. (polite response)
3. Using singular بفرما upward to an unfamiliar addressee
⚠️ آقای مدیر، بفرما داخل.
âqâ-ye modir, be-farmâ dâkhel.
Mr. Director, come in. Grammatical, but singular بفرما is too familiar for the stated relationship.
✅ آقای مدیر، بفرمایید داخل.
âqâ-ye modir, befarmâyid dâkhel.
Mr. Director, please come in. (polite)
4. Refusing by rote after the offer is clearly literal
⚠️ میزبان گفت اگر حساسیت دارید این غذا را نخورید، ولی من فکر کردم تعارف میکند.
mizbân goft agar hassâsiyyat dârid in ghazâ râ na-khorid, vali man fekr kardam ta'ârof mi-konad.
The host said not to eat the dish if I had an allergy, but I thought it was taʿârof. Grammatically valid reasoning, but dangerously wrong: explicit safety language is literal.
✅ دربارهی مواد غذا پرسیدم و پاسخ میزبان را جدی گرفتم.
darbâre-ye mavâdd-e ghazâ porsidam va pâsokh-e mizbân râ jeddi gereftam.
I asked about the ingredients and took the host's answer seriously.
Key Takeaways
- Interpret قابل ندارد، اختیار دارید، زحمت کشیدید، بفرمایید as formula-plus-context, not by literal gloss alone.
- Separate relational work from material resolution: acknowledge generosity, then clarify payment, consent, timing, or action.
- بفرمایید receives its practical meaning from gesture and setting; بفرما is more familiar.
- First refusals and renewed offers are common, but there is no fixed repetition count and no script overrides an explicit boundary.
