Figurative 起来: Recall, Seeming, Inception

The literal 起来 means "up and toward view" — 站起来 (stand up), 拿起来 (pick up). That upward-into-sight image is one of the most productive metaphors in Mandarin, and it branches into three figurative senses you will hear constantly: recalling something (it surfaces into your mind), evaluating something (it presents itself to your senses), and starting an action (it rises into being and keeps going). None of these involve any physical upward motion. Learning to hear the metaphor is what turns 起来 from a spatial word into a tool you use in almost every conversation.

Recall: 想起来 — it surfaces into memory

Add 起来 to 想 (think) and you get 想起来 — not "think upward" but "call to mind, remember suddenly." The memory rises into awareness, just as a physical object rises into view. Crucially, 想起来 marks the moment of retrieval, the click of remembering — it is different from 记得 (jìde, "hold in memory continuously").

我想起来了,他叫小林!

wǒ xiǎng qǐ lái le, tā jiào Xiǎo Lín

Oh, I remember now — his name's Xiao Lin! (informal) — the name surfaces at that instant.

不好意思,我一时想不起来你的名字。

bù hǎoyìsi, wǒ yìshí xiǎng bù qǐ lái nǐ de míngzi

Sorry, I can't recall your name for the moment. (polite) — potential negative 想不起来 = 'unable to retrieve'.

看到这张照片,我想起了小时候的很多事。

kàn dào zhè zhāng zhàopiàn, wǒ xiǎng qǐ le xiǎoshíhou de hěn duō shì

Seeing this photo, I recalled many things from my childhood. (neutral) — with 了 and an object, the 来 is often dropped: 想起了…

Seeming: 看起来 / 听起来 / 说起来 — "when you V it"

Attach 起来 to a perception verb and it means "judging by how it Vs" — looks / sounds / tastes. 看起来 = "looks (like)," 听起来 = "sounds (like)," 说起来 = "speaking of it / when you put it into words." The thing presents a surface to your senses, and you report the impression. This is the ordinary, everyday way to say "seems" — far more natural than reaching for 好像 every time.

Come to think of it, we haven't seen each other in ten years. (informal) — 说起来 opens a reflection.

💡
The frame "V起来 + adjective" evaluates an action by trying it: 这件衣服穿起来很舒服 ("this shirt is comfortable to wear"), 这道菜做起来不麻烦 ("this dish isn't much trouble to make"). English uses a to-infinitive ("comfortable to wear"); Chinese uses V起来.

Inception: 起来 — it starts and keeps going

After many verbs and adjectives, 起来 marks the onset of an action or state that then continues — "start to V (and keep it up)." The action rises into being like something coming up into view. This is a purely aspectual use with no spatial content; it is covered in depth on the inceptive 起来 page. Note that when the verb has an object, the object splits the complement: 下 goes inside as 下起来.

外面突然下起雨来了。

wàimiàn tūrán xià qǐ yǔ lái le

It suddenly started raining outside. (neutral) — the object 雨 splits 起…来: 下起雨来.

听到这个消息,大家都高兴得笑起来了。

tīng dào zhège xiāoxi, dàjiā dōu gāoxìng de xiào qǐ lái le

Hearing the news, everyone was so happy they burst out laughing. (neutral) — 笑起来 = break into laughter.

他一喝多就唱起歌来。

tā yì hē duō jiù chàng qǐ gē lái

Whenever he's had too much to drink, he breaks into song. (informal) — object 歌 splits 起…来: 唱起歌来.

天气慢慢暖和起来了,树也绿了。

tiānqì mànmàn nuǎnhuo qǐ lái le, shù yě lǜ le

The weather is gradually warming up, and the trees have turned green too. (neutral) — inceptive on an adjective: 暖和起来.

A fourth thread: 收起来 — gather in and put away

The same "draw together" edge of the image gives 起来 a "gather up / put away / store" sense: 收起来 (put away), 藏起来 (hide away), 包起来 (wrap up). Here things are pulled together and tucked out of use.

快把玩具收起来,客人要来了。

kuài bǎ wánjù shōu qǐ lái, kèrén yào lái le

Put the toys away quick — guests are coming. (informal) — 收起来 = gather up and store.

Common Mistakes

1. Confusing 想起来 (recall) with 想出来 (come up with). 想起来 retrieves something that already existed in your memory; producing a new idea is 想出来 (see figurative 出来). English "think of" blurs the two.

❌ 我想起来了一个好主意。

Wrong sense — a brand-new idea is produced with 想出来, not recalled with 想起来.

✅ 我想出来了一个好主意。

wǒ xiǎng chū lái le yí ge hǎo zhǔyi

I've come up with a good idea.

2. Using 不能 for "can't recall" instead of the potential form. "Unable to bring to mind" is the potential negative 想不起来, not 不能想起来.

❌ 我不能想起来他的名字。

Incorrect — 'can't retrieve' uses the potential form, not 不能.

✅ 我想不起来他的名字。

wǒ xiǎng bù qǐ lái tā de míngzi

I can't recall his name.

3. Dropping 起来 from "looks / sounds." English "he looks tired" tempts learners to say 他看很累; the impression verb needs 起来.

❌ 他看很累。

Incorrect — 'looks tired' needs 看起来.

✅ 他看起来很累。

tā kàn qǐ lái hěn lèi

He looks tired.

4. Not splitting the object in the inceptive. With an object, 起来 wraps around it: 下起雨来, not *下雨起来.

❌ 突然下雨起来了。

Incorrect — the object 雨 must sit inside: 下起雨来。

✅ 突然下起雨来了。

tūrán xià qǐ yǔ lái le

It suddenly started raining.

Key Takeaways

  • 想起来 = recall, remember suddenly — the memory surfaces; negative potential is 想不起来.
  • 看起来 / 听起来 / 说起来 = looks / sounds / speaking-of — the everyday way to say "seems."
  • V起来 + adjective evaluates an action by trying it: 穿起来很舒服 (comfortable to wear).
  • Inceptive 起来 = start and keep going; an object splits it: 下起来, 唱起来.
  • 收起来 / 藏起来 = gather up and put away — the "draw together" edge of the same image.
