Physically 下 means "down" — 坐下 (sit down), 放下 (put down). Figuratively, the pairing with 来 versus 去 turns into a clean aspect contrast, and understanding why is the key to never mixing them up. Remember the deixis: 来/去 point toward versus away from the speaker, who stands in the present. So 下来 pulls an action down toward here-and-now — to a settled stop, while 下去 pushes it away from here, onward into the future — to keep going. One brakes; the other accelerates. Same 下, opposite trajectories.
| 下来 (toward now — settle) | 下去 (onward — continue) |
|---|---|
| 停下来 — come to a stop | 说下去 — go on speaking |
| 安静下来 — quiet down | 活下去 — go on living |
| 记下来 — write down (fix) | 听下去 — keep listening |
| 定下来 — be finalized | 走下去 — press on |
下来: coming to a settled stop
With verbs of motion and states of agitation, 下来 marks the process of slowing, stopping, and settling — the action decelerates until it comes to rest in the present.
chē mànmàn de tíng xià lái le
The car slowly came to a stop. (neutral) — 停下来 traces the deceleration to a halt.
dàjiā bié chǎo le, xiān ānjìng xià lái
Everyone stop making noise — quiet down first! (informal) — an agitated state settles into calm.
nǐ xiān lěngjìng xià lái, wǒmen mànmàn shāngliang
Calm down first, and let's talk it over slowly. (neutral) — 冷静下来 = come to a settled calm.
下来: recording and fixing in place
The same "settle into place" image gives 下来 a "fix / record / make permanent" sense — capturing something fleeting so it stays put. 记下来 (write down), 拍下来 (photograph), 定下来 (finalize), 留下来 (stay on). The transient is pinned to the present.
Did you write down all the key points the teacher mentioned? (neutral) — spoken words fixed on paper.
zhème měi de fēngjǐng, kuài pāi xià lái ba
Such beautiful scenery — hurry and get a photo! (informal) — the moment is captured and kept.
The date of the meeting has finally been settled. (neutral) — 定下来 = fixed, no longer up in the air.
tā dàxué bìyè hòu juédìng liú xià lái gōngzuò
After finishing university he decided to stay on and work. (neutral) — 留下来 = settle and remain.
下去: carrying on into the future
Switch to 下去 and the action continues away from the present, onward — "go on V-ing, keep it up." This is the continuative aspect: the speaker urges or expects the action to extend forward in time.
bié tíng, qǐng nǐ shuō xià qù, wǒ zài tīng
Don't stop — please go on, I'm listening.
zài nán, wǒmen yě yào jiānchí xià qù
However hard it gets, we have to keep persevering. (neutral) — 坚持下去 = keep it up into the future.
bùguǎn fāshēng shénme, dōu yào hǎohǎo huó xià qù
No matter what happens, you have to go on living well. (neutral) — 活下去 = carry on living.
下 alone: accommodate and leave behind
Without 来/去, figurative 下 has two more uses. In the potential it means "have room to accommodate" — 坐得下 (can seat), 装不下 (won't fit). And 留下 / 剩下 mean "leave behind / be left over" — something stays put after the rest is gone.
zhège jiàoshì zuò de xià wǔshí ge xuéshēng
This classroom can seat fifty students. (neutral) — 坐得下 = has room for.
xíngli tài duō, zhège xiāngzi zhuāng bù xià le
There's too much luggage — this suitcase won't hold it all. (informal) — 装不下 = no room to fit.
tā zǒu de shíhou gěi wǒ liú xià le yì fēng xìn
When he left he left me a letter. (neutral) — 留下 = leave behind.
Common Mistakes
1. Using 下来 for "keep going." Continuation is 下去; 下来 would mean the opposite — stopping.
Incorrect — 'go on speaking' is 说下去; 说下来 wrongly implies stopping.
qǐng nǐ shuō xià qù
Please go on speaking.
2. Using 下去 for "come to a stop." Halting and settling is 下来, not 下去.
Incorrect — coming to a stop is 停下来, not 停下去.
chē mànmàn tíng xià lái le
The car slowly came to a stop.
3. Using 下去 for recording. Fixing something in place (writing it down) is 下来 — the settling image, not the continuing one.
Incorrect — 'write down' fixes it in place: 记下来.
✅ 请把地址记下来。
qǐng bǎ dìzhǐ jì xià lái
Please write down the address.
4. Dropping 得/不 in the accommodate potential. "Can seat / can't fit" needs the potential infix.
Incorrect — the 'have room' sense needs the potential: 坐得下.
✅ 这个教室坐得下五十个人。
zhège jiàoshì zuò de xià wǔshí ge rén
This classroom can seat fifty people.
Key Takeaways
- 下来 pulls an action toward the present — to a settled stop (停下来, 冷静下来) or a fixed record (记下来, 定下来, 拍下来).
- 下去 pushes an action away into the future — keep going (说下去, 坚持下去, 活下去).
- The deixis is doing the work: 来 arrives at now, 去 departs onward. That is why 活下来 = "survived" but 活下去 = "go on living."
- Bare 下 in the potential means accommodate (坐得下, 装不下); 留下 / 剩下 mean leave behind / be left over.
