Of all the figurative directionals, 过来 and 过去 lean hardest on deixis, and once you see the metaphor the idioms almost sort themselves. Picture a boundary between the normal, conscious, functioning side (where the speaker stands, in the here-and-now) and an abnormal, unconscious, off side. Crossing toward the speaker — 过来 — means returning to that normal side: waking, recovering, catching on, coping. Crossing away — 过去 — means leaving it: fainting, blacking out, or letting a hard stretch of time slip by behind you. These are HSK5, idiomatic, and best learned as whole expressions, but the toward/away logic is what keeps them straight.
过来: coming back to normal
With verbs of consciousness and cognition, 过来 marks the return to a clear, conscious, or aware state — the crossing back toward the normal side. 醒过来 (wake, come to), 反应过来 (react = catch on, realize), 缓过来 (recover), 明白过来 (suddenly understand).
他昏迷了三天,今天早上终于醒过来了。
tā hūnmí le sān tiān, jīntiān zǎoshang zhōngyú xǐng guò lái le
He was unconscious for three days and finally came to this morning. (neutral) — crossing back to the waking side.
我过了好一会儿才反应过来他是在开玩笑。
wǒ guò le hǎo yíhuìr cái fǎnyìng guò lái tā shì zài kāi wánxiào
It took me a good while to catch on that he was joking. (informal) — the realization dawns.
喝口热水,慢慢就缓过来了。
hē kǒu rè shuǐ, mànmàn jiù huǎn guò lái le
Have some hot water and you'll gradually recover. (informal) — 缓过来 = come round, feel normal again.
过来: turning attention and coping
By extension, 过来 covers turning to attend to something and managing it — most often in the negative potential 忙不过来 (too busy to cope) and 照顾不过来 (can't manage to look after everything). The image is one of tasks flooding in faster than you can turn toward them.
事情太多,我一个人实在忙不过来。
shìqing tài duō, wǒ yí ge rén shízài máng bú guò lái
There's too much to do — I really can't cope on my own. (informal) — 忙不过来 = can't keep up. Note 不 before 过 becomes bú.
学生太多,一个老师根本照顾不过来。
xuéshēng tài duō, yí ge lǎoshī gēnběn zhàogù bú guò lái
There are too many students — one teacher simply can't look after them all. (neutral) — attention can't stretch far enough.
过去: lapsing out of consciousness
Flip to 过去 and the crossing goes the other way — out of the normal, conscious state. 昏过去 (faint), 晕过去 (black out), 睡过去 (doze off / drift into sleep). The person departs the aware side.
她一听到这个消息就昏了过去。
tā yì tīng dào zhège xiāoxi jiù hūn le guò qù
She fainted the moment she heard the news. (neutral) — 了 splits the idiom: 昏了过去.
他疼得差点儿晕过去。
tā téng de chàdiǎnr yūn guò qù
The pain nearly made him black out. (informal) — 晕过去 = pass out.
| 过来 (toward normal) | 过去 (away from normal) |
|---|---|
| 醒过来 — come to, wake | 昏过去 — faint |
| 缓过来 — recover | 晕过去 — black out |
| 反应过来 — catch on, realize | 睡过去 — doze off |
| 明白过来 — suddenly understand | — |
过去: getting through and muddling by
Applied to stretches of time or trouble, 过去 means "get through, come out the far side" — the hard part passes behind you. 熬过去 (endure through), 挺过去 (hold out through), and the sly 蒙混过去 / 混过去 (muddle through, slip by, get away with it).
只要我们熬过这段日子,一切都会好起来。
zhǐyào wǒmen áo guò zhè duàn rìzi, yíqiè dōu huì hǎo qǐ lái
As long as we get through this stretch, everything will get better. (neutral) — 熬过 = pull through; the full 过…去 takes no object (熬过去) or a 把-fronted one (把这段日子熬过去).
他想蒙混过去,可是一下就被老板看出来了。
tā xiǎng ménghùn guò qù, kěshì yíxià jiù bèi lǎobǎn kàn chū lái le
He tried to slip by, but the boss saw through it in an instant. (informal) — 蒙混过去 = get away with a bluff.
Common Mistakes
1. Using 过来 for fainting. Losing consciousness is crossing away — 过去, not 过来.
❌ 她当场就昏过来了。
Incorrect — fainting is 昏过去 (crossing away from consciousness).
✅ 她当场就昏过去了。
tā dāngchǎng jiù hūn guò qù le
She fainted right there on the spot.
2. Using 过去 for waking or recovering. Coming back to the conscious side is 过来.
❌ 病人昨天晚上醒过去了。
Incorrect — coming to is 醒过来 (crossing back toward consciousness).
✅ 病人昨天晚上醒过来了。
bìngrén zuótiān wǎnshang xǐng guò lái le
The patient came to last night.
3. Dropping 过来 from 反应过来. Bare 反应 is "to react / respond" in general; the "it finally clicked" sense needs 过来.
❌ 他说完我才反应。
Incomplete — 'it clicked' is 反应过来, not bare 反应.
✅ 他说完我才反应过来。
tā shuō wán wǒ cái fǎnyìng guò lái
Only after he finished did it click for me.
4. Using 过来 for "muddle through." Getting through / slipping by is 过去 — the trouble passes behind you.
❌ 他想把这件事蒙混过来。
Incorrect — slipping by is 蒙混过去 (letting it pass behind you).
✅ 他想把这件事蒙混过去。
tā xiǎng bǎ zhè jiàn shì ménghùn guò qù
He wanted to muddle through this and get away with it.
Key Takeaways
- 过来 = back to the normal / conscious side (toward the speaker): 醒过来 (come to), 反应过来 (catch on), 缓过来 (recover), 明白过来 (suddenly get it).
- 过来 = coping, chiefly in the negative potential: 忙不过来, 照顾不过来 (can't keep up). Remember 不 → bú before 过.
- 过去 = away from the normal side: 昏过去 (faint), 晕过去 (black out), 睡过去 (doze off).
- 过去 = get through / muddle by: 熬过去, 挺过去, 蒙混过去.
- Keep the deixis straight: toward-the-speaker (过来) = recovery; away-from-the-speaker (过去) = lapse or passing.
