Literally 出来 means "come out (toward the speaker)" — 走出来 (walk out), 拿出来 (take out). Figuratively, the "emerge into view" image maps onto awareness: something that was hidden comes out into the open where you can perceive it, or something new is brought out into existence. English uses "out" the same way — "figure it out," "make it out," "work it out" — so the metaphor is one of the most transparent in Mandarin. The two figurative branches are discerning (a hidden fact emerges into your perception) and producing (a new thing emerges into being).
Discerning: a hidden fact emerges into perception
Add 出来 to a perception verb and it means "discern, detect, tell" — you perceive something that was not obvious. 看出来 (tell by looking, make out), 听出来 (tell by ear), 认出来 (recognize), 尝出来 (taste that…), 闻出来 (smell that…). The hidden becomes apparent.
| Verb + 出来 | Channel | English |
|---|---|---|
| 看出来 (kàn chū lái) | by sight | tell, make out, spot |
| 听出来 (tīng chū lái) | by ear | tell / recognize by sound |
| 认出来 (rèn chū lái) | by recognition | recognize, identify |
| 尝出来 (cháng chū lái) | by taste | taste that… |
wǒ yì yǎn jiù kàn chū lái tā bù gāoxìng
I could tell at a glance he was unhappy. (neutral) — the hidden mood emerges into view.
nǐ tīng de chū lái zhè shì nǎlǐ de kǒuyīn ma
Can you tell where this accent is from? (informal) — 听得出来 = able to discern by ear.
shí nián méi jiàn, wǒ chàdiǎnr méi rèn chū nǐ lái
Ten years apart — I almost didn't recognize you.
I can taste that there's ginger in this dish. (neutral) — a hidden ingredient detected.
Producing: a new thing emerges into being
The other branch is creation — 出来 marks that a new object, idea, or result is brought into existence. 想出来 (think up, come up with), 写出来 (write out), 做出来 (make, produce), 编出来 (make up, fabricate). What did not exist a moment ago now stands before you.
tā zhōngyú xiǎng chū lái yí ge hǎo bànfǎ
He finally came up with a good plan. (neutral) — the idea is produced into being.
zhè shǒu gē shì tā zìjǐ xiě chū lái de
He wrote this song himself. (neutral) — 写出来 = brought forth in writing.
zhè dào tí wǒ zěnme yě xiǎng bù chū lái
I just can't figure out this problem, no matter what. (informal) — potential negative: unable to produce a solution.
The potential form is where 出来 lives
Figurative 出来 appears constantly in the potential — 看得出来 / 看不出来 (can / can't tell), 听得出来 / 听不出来. These are the default way to ask and answer "can you tell…?"
kàn de chū lái nǐ hěn nǔlì, bié huīxīn
Anyone can tell you've worked hard — don't lose heart. (informal) — affirmative potential.
tā liǎn shàng yìdiǎnr yě kàn bù chū lái zài xiǎng shénme
You can't tell in the slightest what he's thinking from his face. (neutral) — negative potential
Common Mistakes
1. Using 看懂 where the "discern / infer" sense needs 看出来. 看懂 means "understand the content" (a text, a film); 看出来 means "detect / infer something not stated," like a mood or a flaw. See the comprehension resultative 懂 for the contrast.
Incorrect — inferring a mood is 看出来, not 看懂 (which is 'understand content').
wǒ kàn chū lái tā bù gāoxìng
I could tell he was unhappy.
2. Using 不能 instead of the potential for "can't figure out." Inability to produce a result is 想不出来, not 不能想出来.
Incorrect — 'can't figure out' is the potential negative
wǒ xiǎng bù chū lái dá'àn
I can't figure out the answer.
3. Reaching for 认识 instead of 认出来. 认识 is "be acquainted with"; recognizing someone you already know (spotting who they are) is 认出来.
Wrong sense — 'spotted / picked him out of the crowd' is 认出来, not 认识 ('be acquainted with').
wǒ zài rénqún lǐ yíxià jiù bǎ tā rèn chū lái le
I picked him out of the crowd right away.
4. Wrong object placement. The object splits 出…来 (看出问题来) or trails the whole complement (看出来问题) — but it cannot sit between the verb and 出.
Incorrect — the object can't sit before 出; use 看出问题来 or 看出来问题.
wǒ kàn chū wèntí lái le
I spotted the problem.
Key Takeaways
- Discerning: 看出来 (make out), 听出来 (tell by ear), 认出来 (recognize), 尝出来 (taste that…) — a hidden fact emerges into perception.
- Producing: 想出来 (come up with), 写出来 (write out), 做出来 (produce) — a new thing emerges into being.
- 出来 lives in the potential: 看得出来 / 看不出来 is the default "can / can't tell."
- Don't swap in 看懂 (understand content) or 认识 (be acquainted) for the "detect / recognize" sense.
- Object placement follows the general rule: split (看出问题来) or trail (看出来问题), never before 出.
