Of all the compound directionals, 起来 (qǐlai) deserves its own page — partly because its physical meaning is so useful, and partly because it is the seed of a whole thicket of figurative meanings you'll meet later. In its plain, literal sense, 起来 means "up, from a resting position, into view or upright." It is the path morpheme 起 (rise) plus the deictic 来 (toward the speaker/scene). 站起来 is "stand up," 拿起来 is "pick up," 抱起来 is "lift up in the arms." Learn this concrete "upward" motion first: it's the anchor that makes the abstract uses — recall, appearance, and the inceptive "start to" — feel motivated rather than random.
The core image: rising into place
起 traces an upward path — off the ground, out of a seat, up into the hand or the field of view. Pair it with a verb of handling or posture and you get the everyday "up" of daily life:
| Verb | With 起来 | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 站 zhàn (stand) | 站起来 | zhàn qǐ lai | stand up |
| 坐 zuò (sit) | 坐起来 | zuò qǐ lai | sit up |
| 拿 ná (take) | 拿起来 | ná qǐ lai | pick up |
| 抱 bào (hold) | 抱起来 | bào qǐ lai | lift up in the arms |
| 举 jǔ (raise) | 举起来 | jǔ qǐ lai | raise up |
| 捡 jiǎn (pick from ground) | 捡起来 | jiǎn qǐ lai | pick up (off the floor) |
Because 起 pairs only with 来 (there is no 起去 — see the overview), the "away from the speaker" reading is simply unavailable. 起来's deixis always points into the scene: the thing rises *into view, into the hand, into an upright stance.
上课了,请大家站起来。
shàng kè le, qǐng dàjiā zhàn qǐ lai
Class is starting — everyone please stand up. (neutral) — posture rising to upright: 站起来.
孩子哭了,妈妈把他抱起来哄。
háizi kū le, māma bǎ tā bào qǐ lai hǒng
The child cried, so his mom lifted him up and soothed him. — 抱起来: up into the arms.
看到警察,他慢慢把手举起来。
kàn dào jǐngchá, tā mànmàn bǎ shǒu jǔ qǐ lai
Seeing the police, he slowly raised his hands. — 举起来: hands rising upward.
你的笔掉了,我帮你捡起来。
nǐ de bǐ diào le, wǒ bāng nǐ jiǎn qǐ lai
Your pen dropped — let me pick it up for you. — 捡起来: up off the floor.
Where the object goes: the split 起…来
Here is the feature that makes 起来 worth its own page. When there's a thing object, the pair splits around it: the object drops in between 起 and 来. So "pick the book up" is 拿起书来 — 拿 + 起 + 书 + 来:
他拿起一本书来,翻了几页。
tā ná qǐ yì běn shū lái, fān le jǐ yè
He picked up a book and flipped through a few pages. — split: 拿起 + 一本书 + 来.
她拿起电话来就打给了妈妈。
tā ná qǐ diànhuà lái jiù dǎ gěi le māma
She picked up the phone and called her mom right away. — 拿起电话来: object splits 起…来.
Note that in the split form 来 regains its full tone (lái). As with other compounds, a definite object is far more often fronted with 把, which sidesteps the split entirely — 把书拿起来 is the everyday way to say "pick the book up" when the book is already known:
请把地上的垃圾捡起来。
qǐng bǎ dì shàng de lājī jiǎn qǐ lai
Please pick up the trash on the floor. — 把-fronted definite object leaves 起来 intact.
老师一进来,学生们都站了起来。
lǎoshī yí jìn lai, xuéshengmen dōu zhàn le qǐ lai
The moment the teacher walked in, the students all stood up. — 了 splits 站…起来.
Keep the literal apart from the figurative
The physical "up" you've just learned is the literal 起来. The very same syllables do three other, non-spatial jobs, and beginners blur them:
- Inceptive (aspectual) 起来 — "start to / begin and build up." 天气热起来了 is not "the weather rose"; it's "the weather started getting warm." This is a major topic of its own: see inceptive 起来.
- "Recall / occur to" 起来 — 我想起来了 = "I've remembered (it came back to me)."
- "On assessment" 起来 — 听起来不错 = "it sounds good"; 看起来很累 = "looks tired."
Only the literal use denotes real upward motion. The figurative extensions all grow out of that "rising into being" image — which is exactly why mastering the concrete motion first pays off.
他从椅子上站起来,想起来还有一件事没办。
tā cóng yǐzi shàng zhàn qǐ lai, xiǎng qǐ lai hái yǒu yí jiàn shì méi bàn
He stood up from the chair and remembered there was still one thing he hadn't done. — literal 站起来 (stand up) beside figurative 想起来 (remember) in one breath.
Common Mistakes
1. Inventing 起去. 起 combines only with 来.
❌ 请大家站起去。
Wrong — there is no 起去; it's always 起来.
✅ 请大家站起来。
qǐng dàjiā zhàn qǐ lai
Everyone please stand up. — 起来 is the only form.
2. Splitting in the wrong place — object before 起. The object can't sit between the verb and 起; in the split form it goes between 起 and 来.
❌ 他拿书起来看。
Wrong — the object can't come before 起; say 拿起书来 or 把书拿起来.
✅ 他拿起书来看。
tā ná qǐ shū lái kàn
He picked up the book to read. — object between 起 and 来.
3. Confusing literal 起来 with the inceptive. They look identical but mean different things.
❌ 天气站起来了。
Nonsense — 起来 with weather is the inceptive 'start to', not literal 'up': 天气热起来了.
✅ 天气热起来了。
tiānqì rè qǐ lai le
The weather's warming up. — inceptive 起来 on the adjective 热; see the aspect page.
4. Using 二 for 'two' before a measure word. Always 两.
❌ 他举起了二只手。
Wrong — before a measure word 'two' is 两: 两只手.
✅ 他举起了两只手。
tā jǔ qǐ le liǎng zhī shǒu
He raised both hands. — 两只, not 二只.
Key Takeaways
- Literal 起来 = the path 起 (up) + deictic 来: rising from rest into an upright position or into view/hand — 站起来, 拿起来, 抱起来, 举起来, 捡起来.
- 起 pairs only with 来; there is no *起去.
- A thing object splits the pair: 拿起书来 (object between 起 and 来); a definite object is usually fronted with 把 instead (把书拿起来).
- The aspect 了 may split too: 站了起来 or 站起来了.
- Keep the literal "up" distinct from the figurative 起来 (recall, appraisal, and the inceptive "start to" of 下起雨来) — all grow from this concrete image. Use 两, not 二.
