The Posterior Gerund Problem

A simple Catalan gerund normally presents an action as simultaneous with the main event or as its manner, means, or background. It should not be used in careful standard Catalan to add a separate event that happens afterward, nor to assert a result of the main event. Va enviar la carta, rebent la resposta una setmana després is faulty because the reply was received later.

English uses “-ing” clauses more freely, and journalistic prose often compresses event sequences into gerunds. Catalan usually makes the logic clearer with coordination, a finite result clause, a relative clause, or an explicit time connector.

The core distinction: circumstance versus next event

In an acceptable sentence, the gerund tells us how or under what circumstance the finite event unfolds. In the posterior pattern, it behaves like a second finite assertion disguised as a subordinate modifier.

RelationshipExampleStatus
simultaneous mannerVa entrar corrent.acceptable: running is how she entered
meansVa pagar el curs treballant els caps de setmana.acceptable: working is the means
later eventVa enviar la carta, rebent la resposta una setmana després.not acceptable in careful standard prose
consequenceEs va adormir al volant, provocant un accident.not acceptable: the accident is a result

Va entrar corrent perquè arribava tard.

She ran in because she was late.

Els veïns van finançar la festa venent números de la rifa.

The neighbors funded the festival by selling raffle tickets.

Both gerunds answer com? “how?” or per quin mitjà? “by what means?” They do not advance the narrative to a new event.

💡
Ask what conjunction expresses the real relationship. If the honest paraphrase begins “and then,” “as a result,” or “which caused,” the gerund is doing work that belongs to a finite clause.

Clear posterior time

Time expressions such as l'endemà, dos dies després, més tard, and tot seguit often expose the problem. A simple gerund invites overlap; the adverbial explicitly places its event later.

❌ Va presentar la reclamació, rebent una resposta l'endemà.

Incorrect — the response came the following day.

✅ Va presentar la reclamació i va rebre una resposta l'endemà.

She filed the complaint and received a reply the following day.

The repair uses two finite verbs because the sentence asserts two successive events. If sequence matters, make it explicit:

Primer va presentar la reclamació i, l'endemà, va rebre una resposta.

First she filed the complaint and, the next day, she received a reply.

The finite verbs carry their own tense and subjects. The gerund has neither, which is one reason it is ill suited to narrating an independent next step.

Consequence is also a problem

Chronological overlap does not automatically license a gerund. If the second proposition is asserted primarily as the consequence of the first, the formal standard still favors a finite result construction.

❌ El conductor es va adormir, provocant un accident greu.

Incorrect in careful prose — the accident is presented as a consequence.

✅ El conductor es va adormir, cosa que va provocar un accident greu.

The driver fell asleep, which caused a serious accident.

✅ El conductor es va adormir i, per això, hi va haver un accident greu.

The driver fell asleep and, as a result, there was a serious accident.

This distinction is semantic, not mechanical. In Va resoldre el problema canviant una línia de codi, changing the line is the means internal to solving the problem. In Va canviar una línia de codi, resolent així tots els problemes, the second phrase asserts a result. Formal Catalan rewrites the latter as i així va resoldre....

Va canviar una línia de codi i així va resoldre el problema.

She changed one line of code and thereby solved the problem.

💡
Així after a gerund is a useful warning sign when it means “thereby/as a result.” Move the consequence into a finite clause: i així va..., de manera que va..., or cosa que va....

Why the error thrives in journalism and administration

News and administrative writing often tries to compress many facts into one sentence. That pressure produces strings such as el ple va aprovar la norma, entrant en vigor l'endemà. The gerund seems concise, but it blurs who acts, when the second event occurs, and whether the writer means sequence or consequence.

❌ El ple va aprovar el reglament, entrant en vigor l'endemà.

Incorrect — the regulation's entry into force is a later event, and its subject differs.

✅ El ple va aprovar el reglament, que va entrar en vigor l'endemà.

The council approved the regulations, which came into force the following day.

❌ L'empresa va tancar la planta, quedant sense feina cent vint persones.

Incorrect in formal prose — the job losses are a resulting situation.

✅ L'empresa va tancar la planta i cent vint persones es van quedar sense feina.

The company closed the plant and 120 people lost their jobs.

The second repair also restores the logical subject: cent vint persones belongs to es van quedar, not to the company. Thus the posterior gerund frequently overlaps with the dangling-gerund problem, but the two faults are distinct. A sentence can keep the same subject and still misuse chronology.

Four reliable repairs

Choose the repair according to the relation you actually mean.

MeaningRepairModel
simple sequencei
  • finite verb
Va signar l'acta i en va rebre una còpia.
explicit resultde manera que / per aixòVa nevar, de manera que van tancar el port.
comment on the whole eventcosa que
  • finite verb
Van cancel·lar el tren, cosa que ens va obligar a esperar.
later timedesprés / tot seguit / l'endemàVa plegar i després va anar a casa.

If the original gerund carries a weak pronoun, preserve it in the repair. Faulty Van signar l'acta, rebent-ne una còpia becomes Van signar l'acta i en van rebre una còpia. The pronoun moves before the finite verb because Catalan weak-pronoun placement changes with finiteness.

Les parts van signar l'acta i en van rebre un exemplar.

The parties signed the record and received a copy of it.

The fronting test—and its limit

A traditional quick test moves the gerund clause to the front. Caminant de pressa, va arribar a temps remains logical, whereas Morint dues hores després, va ingressar a l'hospital reverses the real sequence and is nonsensical.

The test is useful but not a definition. Some acceptable means gerunds sound awkward when fronted because information structure changes; some bad sentences remain superficially imaginable. The decisive question is whether the gerund is subordinate manner/circumstance or a separately asserted later result.

Immediate effects and formal editing

Some linguistic descriptions recognize a gray area of quasi-simultaneity, where one movement overlaps the final phase of another: for example, stepping backward while bumping into someone. The exact temporal boundary is genuinely subtle; there is no reliable number of seconds that makes a gerund correct.

In (formal) and (academic) writing, including administrative and journalistic prose, the robust editorial rule is simple: if the second event is interpreted as a result or narrative continuation, give it a finite verb even when it follows immediately. This is not a claim that speakers never produce such gerunds (informal); it is the production norm that prevents ambiguity.

Va fer un pas enrere i va topar amb el seu amic sense voler.

He stepped backward and accidentally bumped into his friend.

Not every final gerund is posterior

Position after the main verb does not make a gerund wrong. The following gerund is simultaneous manner:

Va travessar la plaça parlant per telèfon.

She crossed the square while talking on the phone.

Nor does perfect meaning automatically require the compound gerund. The compound havent + participle marks anteriority—Havent acabat, va marxar “Having finished, she left”—and receives separate treatment on the compound gerund page. It does not license posteriority either.

There is no major regional rule split: Central, Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese standards all benefit from the same clear separation between an accompanying gerund and a later finite event.

Mini-dialogue

—Puc escriure «va caure, trencant-se el braç»? —En un text formal, escriu «va caure i es va trencar el braç».

—Can I write ‘he fell, breaking his arm’? —In a formal text, write ‘he fell and broke his arm.’

—I «va entrar corrent»? —Això sí: córrer explica com va entrar.

—And ‘she came in running’? —That is fine: running explains how she entered.

Common Mistakes

1. Narrating a later event with a gerund.

❌ Va publicar la novel·la, guanyant un premi l'any següent.

Incorrect — winning happened the following year.

✅ Va publicar la novel·la i va guanyar un premi l'any següent.

She published the novel and won an award the following year.

2. Expressing consequence with provocant.

❌ Va ploure tota la nit, provocant inundacions al litoral.

Incorrect in careful prose — the flooding is the consequence.

✅ Va ploure tota la nit, cosa que va provocar inundacions al litoral.

It rained all night, which caused flooding on the coast.

3. Assuming a comma makes the construction correct.

❌ El tren va descarrilar, quedant tallada la línia.

Incorrect — punctuation does not change the result relation.

✅ El tren va descarrilar i la línia va quedar tallada.

The train derailed and the line was closed.

4. Copying an English “-ing” result clause.

❌ Es va equivocar de data, perdent així la reserva.

Incorrect — losing the booking is a consequence.

✅ Es va equivocar de data i per això va perdre la reserva.

She got the date wrong and therefore lost the booking.

5. Repairing time but leaving the wrong subject implicit.

❌ Havent aprovat la reforma, la llei va entrar en vigor l'endemà.

Incorrect for the intended meaning — this says the law approved the reform.

✅ Un cop el Parlament va aprovar la reforma, la llei va entrar en vigor l'endemà.

Once Parliament approved the reform, the law came into force the next day.

Key Takeaways

A Catalan gerund is suited to simultaneous circumstance, manner, and means—not to an independent next event or asserted consequence. Time phrases such as després and result markers such as així often reveal the error. Repair sequence with i, result with per això or de manera que, and whole-clause consequences with cosa que. In careful writing, a finite verb is clearer even in disputed cases of immediate consequence.
