Avoiding Dangling Gerunds

An adverbial Catalan gerund at the edge of a clause normally borrows its understood subject from the main clause. In Sortint de casa, vaig trobar la Núria, the unspoken subject of sortint is the same “I” expressed by vaig trobar. A dangling gerund appears when the main subject cannot logically perform the gerund’s action, or when a passive or impersonal construction leaves the performer unclear.

English sometimes tolerates loose introductory -ing phrases, especially in speech and business writing. Careful Catalan requires a clearer link. The solution is not to avoid gerunds altogether, but to identify who performs each action before choosing the construction.

The basic control rule

A gerund has no person or number ending: sortint can mean “while I was leaving,” “while you were leaving,” or “while they were leaving.” Regular gerunds end in stressed -ant, -ent, or -int (parlant, perdent, dormint); these forms need no written accent. The finite verb and its subject supply person, time, and mood.

Gerundial clauseMain clauseShared subject
Sortint de casavaig trobar la Núriajo
Anant cap a l'estacióvas veure l'accidenttu
Treballant plegatsacabarem abansnosaltres

Sortint de la feina, vaig passar pel supermercat.

On my way out of work, I stopped by the supermarket.

Anant cap a l'estació, vas veure la Berta?

Did you see Berta on your way to the station?

Treballant plegats, acabarem la mudança abans de sopar.

By working together, we'll finish the move before dinner.

The gerund can express time, manner, cause, or means, but that semantic relation does not change the control rule. In all three examples, the subject of the finite verb is also the person doing what the gerund describes.

This rule concerns free adverbial gerunds such as the introductory phrases above. After certain verbs of perception or discovery, a gerund may instead describe the direct object: in the next example, la Júlia is both the object of vaig trobar and the understood subject of esperant.

Vaig trobar la Júlia esperant davant del cinema.

I found Júlia waiting outside the cinema.

That object-oriented pattern is not dangling because the performer is syntactically present. With verbs such as veure, however, a sentence can be ambiguous between “I did it while seeing someone” and “I saw someone doing it.” If context does not settle the reading immediately, use a finite relative or temporal clause.

💡
For a clause-edge adverbial gerund, use the “who is doing it?” test. Put the main subject immediately after the English paraphrase “while/when _ was doing this.” If the result is absurd—“while the conclusion was reading the report”—the Catalan gerund is dangling too.

What a dangling gerund looks like

Suppose the intended meaning is “While I was reading the report, the conclusion seemed obvious.” The following sentence does not say that:

❌ Llegint l'informe, la conclusió semblava evident.

Incorrect as intended — grammatically, la conclusió is presented as the reader.

Because la conclusió is the main subject, it becomes the default understood subject of llegint. A natural repair gives both actions to the speaker:

✅ Llegint l'informe, vaig veure que la conclusió era evident.

While reading the report, I saw that the conclusion was obvious.

Alternatively, a finite subordinate clause can name one subject while the main clause has another:

Quan vaig llegir l'informe, la conclusió em va semblar evident.

When I read the report, the conclusion seemed obvious to me.

The second repair is often the clearest. A finite clause with quan, mentre, com que or després que can express its own subject and tense; a bare gerund cannot do so as freely.

Passive and impersonal clauses hide the controller

Passive and impersonal sentences are the main danger because they suppress or background the agent. In Revisant les dades, es van detectar tres errors, the grammatical subject of the passive construction is tres errors, but errors cannot review data. A reader can infer that some analysts did the reviewing, yet the syntax does not identify them.

❌ Revisant les dades, es van detectar tres errors.

Risky in careful writing — the people who reviewed the data are left without a clear syntactic role.

✅ En revisar les dades, vam detectar tres errors.

When we reviewed the data, we detected three errors.

✅ Durant la revisió de les dades, es van detectar tres errors.

During the review of the data, three errors were detected.

The first correction restores an explicit human controller through vam detectar. The second keeps the passive structure but replaces the gerund with a noun phrase that needs no agent of its own.

Generic statements can be less clear-cut. Speakers may understand an unexpressed generic person in Treballant des de casa, s'estalvia temps, roughly “by working from home, one saves time.” This occurs in actual usage, but it can momentarily sound as though temps does the working. In neutral edited prose, prefer one of these:

Si treballes des de casa, estalvies temps en desplaçaments.

If you work from home, you save commuting time.

Treballar des de casa estalvia temps en desplaçaments.

Working from home saves commuting time.

💡
An understood generic person can sometimes license a gerund in conversation, but a passive es-construction is a poor place to make the reader recover that person. In instructions, reports, and academic prose, rewrite whenever two readings compete.

A gerund may have its own explicit subject

Catalan does permit an absolute gerund clause with an overt subject, normally after the gerund. This is not dangling because the gerund’s performer is stated. It is, however, mainly (formal/literary).

Essent la Marta la responsable del projecte, totes les consultes li arribaven directament.

Since Marta was responsible for the project, all inquiries went directly to her. (formal)

Havent arribat tots els convidats, la directora va començar el discurs.

All the guests having arrived, the director began her speech. (formal)

In the second example, tots els convidats belongs to havent arribat, while la directora belongs to va començar. Everyday speech normally uses a finite clause: Quan ja havien arribat tots els convidats, la directora va començar el discurs. See The Compound Gerund for the anterior construction havent + participle.

Do not use the possibility of an absolute clause as permission to leave the subject merely implied. If the subjects differ, either state the gerund’s subject in this marked formal pattern or, more naturally, use a finite clause.

Pronouns, negation, and word order

Weak pronouns attach to a gerund: mirant-la, dient-ho, tornant-hi, parlant-ne. With more than one pronoun, normal ordering and punctuation apply: explicant-m'ho, anant-se'n. The clitic may identify an object, but it does not normally change who controls the gerund.

Tornant-hi demà, podràs parlar amb la directora.

When you go back there tomorrow, you'll be able to speak with the director.

Here hi means “there”; the understood subject of tornant is still the “you” encoded by podràs. Negation precedes the gerundial unit: no sabent-ho, no trobant-ne cap. Such negative gerundial clauses are especially common in (formal) prose.

No sabent què respondre, vaig demanar cinc minuts més.

Not knowing what to answer, I asked for five more minutes.

Do not attach a pronoun to a later participle in a compound gerund: the standard pattern is havent-ho explicat, not havent explicat-ho.

Choosing the best repair

ProblemBest repairExample
same person can perform both actionsmake that person the main subjectLlegint l'avís, vaig entendre el canvi.
the two clauses have different subjectsuse a finite clauseQuan vaig llegir l'avís, el canvi em va quedar clar.
agent is intentionally irrelevantuse a noun phrase or finite passive clauseDurant la inspecció, es van trobar errors.
formal absolute construction is appropriatestate the gerund’s subjectEssent ell el president, la decisió depenia d'ell.

The simple gerund normally overlaps with the main event. It must not be used merely to add a later event: Va enviar el correu, rebent una resposta l'endemà is not the standard way to say “and received a reply the next day.” Coordinate the verbs instead: Va enviar el correu i va rebre una resposta l'endemà. That separate time-order error is treated fully under Gerunds and Posteriority.

Mini-dialogue

—He escrit: «Arribant a casa, va començar a ploure».

—I wrote: ‘As we were getting home, it started raining.’

—Però qui arribava a casa? La frase no ho diu.

—But who was getting home? The sentence doesn't say.

—Nosaltres. Llavors escric: «Quan arribàvem a casa, va començar a ploure».

—We were. Then I'll write: ‘As we were getting home, it started raining.’

The finite arribàvem makes the human subject recoverable while allowing impersonal va començar a ploure to remain the main clause.

Regional and register notes

Subject control is not a Central-versus-Valencian choice: all contemporary standards require a coherent interpretation. (formal IEC/AVL) edited language favors explicit repairs where an impersonal or passive clause makes control doubtful. Absolute gerunds are understood across the territory but belong mainly to (formal/literary) prose. Regional speech may accept more context-dependent generic readings, yet they are not a useful learner model when a clear finite clause is available.

Common Mistakes

1. Making an inanimate main subject perform a human action.

❌ Obrint la bústia, la carta va caure a terra.

Incorrect as intended — this says that the letter opened the mailbox.

✅ Quan vaig obrir la bústia, la carta va caure a terra.

When I opened the mailbox, the letter fell to the floor.

2. Hiding the controller inside a passive construction.

❌ Analitzant les mostres, es van descobrir dues anomalies.

Unclear in careful prose — the analysts are not syntactically identified.

✅ En analitzar les mostres, vam descobrir dues anomalies.

When we analyzed the samples, we discovered two anomalies.

3. Copying an English introductory -ing phrase word for word.

❌ Conduint cap al poble, el campanar es veia de lluny.

Incorrect as intended — the bell tower was not driving.

✅ Mentre conduíem cap al poble, vèiem el campanar de lluny.

While we were driving toward the village, we could see the bell tower in the distance.

4. Treating an object pronoun as the gerund’s subject.

❌ Mirant-la des del balcó, la plaça semblava enorme.

Incorrect as intended — la is the object of mirant, while plaça still dangles as the apparent viewer.

✅ Mirant la plaça des del balcó, la vaig trobar enorme.

Looking at the square from the balcony, I found it enormous.

Key Takeaways

  • The unexpressed subject of a free adverbial gerund normally matches the main-clause subject; a gerund selected after a perception or discovery verb can instead describe its direct object.
  • Passive and impersonal clauses often hide the needed controller; rewrite them when the performer is unclear.
  • A (formal/literary) absolute gerund may have its own explicit subject, normally after the gerund.
  • Weak pronouns attach to the gerund, but object pronouns do not determine its subject.
  • When two subjects differ, a finite clause with quan, mentre, or com que is usually the clearest solution.
