Gerundial Clauses

A gerundial clause presents an event as a circumstance surrounding another event: Va entrar corrent describes how someone entered; Veient que plovia, vam agafar un taxi can explain why we took one. The Catalan gerund is nonfinite and invariable, but its clause still has an understood subject, objects, clitics, negation, aspect, and a semantic relation to the finite clause.

English -ing constructions overlap only partly. Catalan normally expects an adjunct gerund to share the finite clause's subject, strongly restricts a gerund that denotes a later result, and does not use a gerund as the ordinary noun-like name of an activity. These constraints prevent compressed clauses from becoming logically misleading.

Simultaneous event, manner, or attendant circumstance

The core gerundial relation is temporal overlap. The gerund tells what the matrix subject is doing while the finite event unfolds.

Núria entered the dining room while talking on the phone.

The children were coming down the stairs two steps at a time.

In both examples, the matrix subject controls the gerund's unspoken subject: Núria is talking; the children are jumping. The bracketed analysis is La Núriaᵢ va entrar [Øᵢ parlant per telèfon]. The gerund does not introduce a second unidentified actor.

When the gerund is tightly integrated as manner, it usually follows the verb without a comma. A fronted gerundial clause instead frames the whole event:

Somrient, la Núria va entrar al despatx i va deixar les claus damunt la taula.

Smiling, Núria entered the office and left the keys on the table. (framed circumstance)

La Núria va entrar al despatx somrient.

Núria entered the office smiling. (neutral, integrated manner)

The referential content is close, but the first order makes the smile a discourse frame; the second incorporates it into the description of the entrance. This is information structure, not free rearrangement without effect.

Temporal and causal readings

A fronted gerund often allows a temporal paraphrase with mentre or a causal paraphrase with com que.

anterior circumstancecompound gerund precedes the finite eventdesprés de + infinitive

Seeing that the queue was not moving, we looked for another entrance.

This can mean “when we saw” and, pragmatically, “because we saw.” The causal inference arises because noticing the stalled queue motivates the search. Gerund morphology alone does not encode because.

By working from home, I save almost an hour of commuting.

Here the relation is means or cause. If the relation could be misunderstood, use a finite connector:

Com que treballo des de casa tres dies per setmana, estalvio temps de trajecte.

Because I work from home three days a week, I save commuting time.

💡
A gerund leaves the discourse relation partly implicit. Use it when simultaneity, manner, or cause is obvious; choose mentre, com que, or perquè when the relation itself matters.

The same-subject expectation

An adjunct gerund with no overt subject is normally controlled by the grammatical subject of the finite clause—not by the speaker, the nearest noun, or whoever seems plausible in English.

As I was leaving the library, I ran into Jana.

The omitted first-person subject of em vaig trobar also leaves the library. If the intended leaver is Jana, say so with a finite clause: Quan la Jana sortia de la biblioteca, me la vaig trobar.

Catalan also has gerundial absolute constructions with an overt, normally postverbal subject, especially in (formal) or (literary) prose:

Essent la sala tan petita, van limitar l'aforament a trenta persones.

Since the room was so small, they limited capacity to thirty people. (formal)

Here la sala is the subject of essent and the unexpressed institutional agent is the subject of van limitar. Because this is a distinct marked construction, it should not be used as a license for vague dangling gerunds; see absolute constructions.

Why posterior gerunds are restricted

The simple gerund locates its event as simultaneous with, overlapping, or interpretively prior to the matrix event. It should not normally carry the next event in a chronological chain.

The delivery driver slipped on the landing and twisted his ankle.

The twisting follows as a result of the slip. Edited Catalan rejects compressing that later result as va relliscar, torçant-se el turmell. Coordination with i states the sequence honestly.

By contrast, true overlap is grammatical:

El repartidor va travessar el vestíbul arrossegant el carro.

The delivery driver crossed the lobby dragging the trolley.

Dragging accompanies the crossing. The test is temporal: could “while” paraphrase the relation without changing it? If not, a finite clause is safer.

News and bureaucratic prose sometimes uses a posterior-result gerund under pressure to compress information. That usage remains unsuitable in careful (formal) writing. Prefer active coordination to a heavy passive chain: El consell va aprovar l'acord i el va publicar l'endemà is clearer than constructions that conceal the sequence or agent.

The compound gerund: explicit anteriority

Havent + past participle marks an event completed before the matrix event.

Having checked all the connections, the technician restarted the system.

The understood subject is la tècnica in both clauses. The participle after havent is invariable: havent comprovat, not an agreeing form. This construction is more frequent in (formal), (academic), and (literary) writing than in everyday speech, where després de comprovar... or quan va haver comprovat... may sound lighter.

Negation precedes the compound gerund:

No havent rebut cap resposta, vam ajornar la reserva.

Having received no reply, we postponed the booking. (formal)

Its causal force comes from context: lack of a response explains the postponement. The grammatical aspect itself encodes anteriority.

Clitics and internal structure

Unstressed object pronouns attach after a simple gerund and form one correctly hyphenated or apostrophized unit.

Anava comparant-ne els preus mentre esperava l'autobús.

She kept comparing their prices while she waited for the bus.

En resumes a partitive or de-related complement. With multiple clitics, their order remains the ordinary Catalan order:

Havent-li-ho explicat dues vegades, vaig deixar que llegís l'informe tot sol.

Having explained it to him twice, I let him read the report on his own.

The cluster li-ho supplies the indirect and direct objects of the lexical verb explicar, but it attaches orthographically to the gerundial auxiliary havent: havent-li-ho explicat. Omitting a required locative or partitive clitic is not repaired by the gerund's nonfinite status.

Attachment and ambiguity

I saw the doctor coming out of the lift / while I was coming out of the lift. (structurally ambiguous)

Because both jo and la doctora are plausible subjects of sortint, the gerund can attach to the matrix subject or describe the perceived object.

Gerunds also cannot normally act as postnominal relative clauses in careful Catalan. English “an email containing the code” is un correu que conté el codi or un correu amb el codi, not a bare specificative gerund.

A natural dialogue

—Has vist en Pol?

—Have you seen Pol? —Yes, I ran into him going up to the roof terrace; he was talking to the plumber.

Context makes Pol the understood subject of pujant because he is the perceived object, but the form can still be momentarily ambiguous. The following finite periphrasis anava parlant overtly anchors the subject to Pol and describes an ongoing accompanying action.

Regional and register guidance

The same-subject norm and the ban on clearly posterior result gerunds belong to both IEC and AVL careful standards. (regional: Valencian) finite alternatives and verb morphology differ, but the clause-linking constraint does not. Gerund absolutes such as essent ell present are (formal) or (literary). The compound gerund is likewise elevated; ordinary (informal) conversation usually chooses finite temporal or causal clauses.

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving a dangling subject.

Incorrect as intended—the grammar says that the fog was driving toward Girona.

While we were driving toward Girona, the fog became very thick.

2. Using a gerund for a later result.

❌ El prestatge va cedir, trencant tres gerros.

Incorrect in careful Catalan—the breaking follows as a result.

The shelf gave way and three vases broke.

3. Using the gerund as an activity noun.

❌ Llegint abans de dormir és relaxant.

Incorrect—the generic activity in subject position requires the infinitive.

✅ Llegir abans de dormir és relaxant.

Reading before bed is relaxing.

4. Making the gerund agree.

❌ Les corredores van arribar somrientes.

Incorrect—the Catalan gerund is invariable; this form is not Catalan.

✅ Les corredores van arribar somrient.

The runners arrived smiling.

Correction task

In Vaig saludar la veïna baixant l'escala, identify the ambiguity before editing: either I was going down, or the neighbor was. To assign the movement to the neighbor, turn it into a finite relative:

Vaig saludar la veïna, que baixava l'escala amb dues bosses.

I greeted the neighbor, who was coming down the stairs with two bags.

To assign it to the speaker, use Mentre baixava l'escala, vaig saludar la veïna. The finite verb clarifies the subject and the punctuation distinguishes framing from noun modification.

Key Takeaways

  • A simple gerund normally expresses overlap, manner, means, or a contextually inferred cause.
  • Its unspoken subject usually matches the matrix subject; an overt different subject creates a marked absolute construction.
  • Do not use a gerund for a clearly later consequence or as an English-style activity noun.
  • Havent + participle marks anteriority and is especially common in formal writing.
  • Fronting, punctuation, and finite paraphrases help resolve ambiguous attachment and discourse relations.
