An absolute construction is a nonfinite clause whose understood or expressed subject is independent of the subject of the main clause. In Acabada la reunió, els tècnics van apagar els llums, la reunió belongs to acabada, whereas els tècnics belongs to van apagar. Catalan uses these compact clauses especially in formal, journalistic, academic, and literary prose; everyday conversation usually prefers a finite clause such as Quan es va acabar la reunió....
English has comparable phrases—“the meeting over” or “the guests having left”—but uses them less freely. The central challenge is therefore not translation word by word. It is keeping the two clause structures separate and making the temporal or causal relation recoverable.
Participial absolutes: a completed background event
A participial absolute normally has the order past participle + noun phrase. The participle agrees in gender and number with that noun phrase. Semantically, it usually presents a state or completed event as the background for the main event: “once X was done,” “with X settled,” or sometimes “because X was settled.”
Acabada la reunió, els tècnics van apagar els llums.
Once the meeting was over, the technicians turned off the lights. (neutral-formal)
Aprovades les esmenes, el ple va votar el text definitiu.
Once the amendments had been approved, the plenary session voted on the final text. (formal/institutional)
Un cop resolt el problema de connexió, vam reprendre la videotrucada.
Once the connection problem had been solved, we resumed the video call. (neutral)
The constituent structure of the first example is [Acabada [la reunió]]ABS, [els tècnics]SUBJ [van apagar els llums]PRED. The initial phrase is not the subject of van apagar: it is a whole subordinate unit. Agreement reveals the internal relation: acabada is feminine singular because reunió is feminine singular; aprovades is feminine plural because esmenes is feminine plural.
| Absolute subject | Required participle | Usual interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| el debat | acabat | once the debate had ended |
| la sessió | acabada | once the session had ended |
| els comptes | revisats | once the accounts had been reviewed |
| les dades | publicades | once the data had been published |
Argument relations and the passive-result meaning
With a transitive participle, the noun after the participle corresponds to the verb's affected object: someone approves les esmenes, and once they are approved Catalan can say aprovades les esmenes. The external agent is normally suppressed because it is irrelevant or recoverable. That does not make the main clause passive.
Signat el contracte per totes dues parts, l'empresa va anunciar l'acord.
With the contract signed by both parties, the company announced the agreement. (formal)
Arribat el tren, la gent es va acostar a la vora de l'andana.
When the train had arrived, people moved toward the edge of the platform. (neutral-formal)
The construction also admits certain intransitive participles, especially with change of state or arrival (arribat el tren, passada la tempesta, mort el dictador). There is no ordinary passive relation in arribat el tren: el tren is the argument that arrives. What unifies the cases is a resulting boundary—an event is presented as attained before the matrix event.
Do not add an unnecessary passive merely because English uses “having been.” Catalan prefers the compact participle where the relation is clear.
Havent estat revisats els expedients, la comissió en va arxivar quatre.
After the files had been reviewed, the committee archived four of them. (grammatical but unnecessarily heavy here)
Revisats els expedients, la comissió en va arxivar quatre.
Once the files had been reviewed, the committee archived four of them. (more natural formal Catalan)
Notice en va arxivar quatre. The left absolute clause does not license omission of the partitive clitic required by the main clause. Displacement does not erase Catalan argument structure; see partitive en.
Gerundial absolutes: simultaneous circumstance or cause
A gerundial absolute presents an ongoing state or circumstance, and the gerund does not agree. Its explicit subject commonly follows it. These constructions are more marked than participial absolutes and often belong to formal prose; finite alternatives are usually clearer in conversation.
Essent el termini tan curt, l'equip va reduir l'abast del projecte.
Since the deadline was so short, the team reduced the scope of the project. (formal)
Havent marxat ja els convidats, la Júlia va tancar la terrassa.
The guests having already left, Júlia closed the terrace. (formal/literary)
Parlant encara la directora, algú del fons va obrir la porta.
While the director was still speaking, someone at the back opened the door. (marked formal narrative)
The simple gerund generally conveys simultaneity or a causal state; the compound gerund havent + participle marks anteriority. Compare this with ordinary same-subject gerunds on gerundial clauses. In Havent marxat els convidats, la Júlia..., els convidats is overt precisely because it differs from la Júlia.
Word order, information structure, and punctuation
Initial position is the norm because the absolute clause frames what follows. A final absolute can add an afterthought, but it is heavier and may obscure its scope. The comma is not ornamental: it marks the absolute clause as detached from the main predication.
Un cop tancades totes les finestres, la casa va quedar en silenci.
Once all the windows had been closed, the house fell silent. (neutral order: frame before event)
La casa va quedar en silenci, tancades ja totes les finestres.
The house fell silent, all the windows now closed. (reordered; literary afterthought)
The first version makes the closed windows the temporal frame. The second presents the silence first and appends a descriptive circumstance. A comma is expected in both. Without it, la casa va quedar en silenci tancades... encourages the reader to attach tancades incorrectly inside the predicate.
Ambiguity diagnosis
Havent parlat la coordinadora amb els delegats, vam canviar l'ordre del dia.
After the coordinator had spoken with the delegates, we changed the agenda. (the coordinator is the subject of 'havent parlat')
The sequence is structurally clear because la coordinadora follows the gerund and vam supplies a separate first-person plural subject. But Havent parlat amb els delegats, vam canviar... is not equivalent: without the noun phrase, the understood subject becomes “we,” so it means “After we had spoken with the delegates.” English often tolerates loose participial attachment; careful Catalan does not invite the reader to guess.
A natural dialogue: speech prefers expansion
—Ja podem enviar la proposta? —Sí. Un cop revisades les xifres, la Núria hi ha donat el vistiplau. —Perfecte; doncs l'envio ara mateix.
‘Can we send the proposal now?’ ‘Yes. Once the figures were checked, Núria approved it.’ ‘Perfect; then I'll send it right now.’ (neutral workplace conversation)
Un cop + participle is quite natural in careful speech. A bare Revisades les xifres... would sound more written. (regional: Valencian) Una volta revisades les xifres is also standard and natural; the difference is lexical, not structural. Central Catalan is the baseline here. Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese speech can vary in preferred linkers, but the agreement and subject relations described above remain the safe formal norm.
Common Mistakes
❌ Acabat la reunió, tothom va marxar.
Incorrect—'acabat' fails to agree with feminine singular 'la reunió'.
✅ Acabada la reunió, tothom va marxar.
Once the meeting was over, everyone left.
❌ Revisat les factures, la comptable va trucar al proveïdor.
Incorrect—the participle must be feminine plural: 'revisades'.
✅ Revisades les factures, la comptable va trucar al proveïdor.
Once the invoices had been reviewed, the accountant called the supplier.
❌ Caminant cap a l'estació, va començar a ploure sobre la Marta.
Incorrect attachment—the syntax makes the unexpressed walker the subject of 'va començar', although the intended walker is Marta.
✅ Mentre la Marta caminava cap a l'estació, va començar a ploure.
While Marta was walking toward the station, it started to rain.
❌ Aprovada la proposta el consell en va publicar els detalls.
Incorrect punctuation—the detached initial absolute must be closed with a comma.
✅ Aprovada la proposta, el consell en va publicar els detalls.
Once the proposal was approved, the council published its details.
Correction task
Repair these structures before checking the solutions: (1) Publicat les dades, els periodistes les van analitzar; (2) Havent sortit de l'edifici, l'alarma va sonar when the employees, not the alarm, left; (3) La sessió acabada els diputats van votar.
- Publicades les dades, els periodistes les van analitzar: restore feminine plural agreement.
- Quan els empleats havien sortit de l'edifici, l'alarma va sonar or Havent sortit els empleats de l'edifici, l'alarma va sonar: express the independent subject.
- Acabada la sessió, els diputats van votar: use the marked participle-first order and the framing comma.
Key Takeaways
A participial absolute normally presents a completed prior event and agrees with its own noun phrase. A gerundial absolute presents a simultaneous, causal, or—with havent—anterior circumstance and may express its separate subject after the gerund. Neither initial noun phrase is automatically the subject of the main clause. Use punctuation to mark the clause boundary, keep clitics required by the main predicate, and prefer a finite clause whenever the nonfinite subject or semantic relation would otherwise be ambiguous.
