Catalan combines a finite auxiliary with a gerund to view an event from inside. Estic llegint focuses on reading in progress now; el cel es va enfosquint presents a gradual development; continua plovent says that rain already under way persists. These are not interchangeable translations of English “be + -ing.” Each auxiliary contributes its own aspectual viewpoint; review the gerund's morphology on Forming the Gerund.
The simple present and imperfect remain more neutral and more frequent than their English counterparts in many contexts. Catalan therefore uses a progressive when the internal course or duration matters, not merely because English happens to use an “-ing” form.
Estar + gerund: an event in progress
The finite form of estar carries person, number, tense, and mood; the gerund stays invariant. A complete present model is:
| Person | Present progressive |
|---|---|
| jo | estic parlant |
| tu | estàs parlant |
| ell / ella / vostè | està parlant |
| nosaltres | estem parlant |
| vosaltres / vós | esteu parlant |
| ells / elles / vostès | estan parlant |
The same architecture works in other tenses: estava parlant “was speaking,” estarà parlant “will be speaking / is probably speaking,” estaria parlant “would be speaking,” dubto que estigui parlant “I doubt that she is speaking.” The future can carry probability, and the subjunctive comes from the clause's assertion status; the gerund does not select either meaning.
No el molestis, que està preparant l'examen de demà.
Don't bother him; he's preparing for tomorrow's exam.
Quan vas trucar, estàvem sopant.
When you called, we were having dinner.
Dubto que encara estiguin treballant a aquesta hora.
I doubt they're still working at this hour.
Progressive or simple tense?
The simple present can report what is happening now, particularly when the situation is clear from context. It also expresses habits and stable situations. Estar + gerund is more marked: it directs attention to duration or to the fact that the action is currently unfolding.
| Neutral/simple | Focused progressive | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Què fas? | Què estàs fent? | both are possible; the second focuses on the activity under way |
| Treballo a casa. | Estic treballant a casa. | habit/location versus activity now or temporary arrangement |
| Cada dia agafo el tren. | — | a routine normally takes the simple present |
| Plovia. | Estava plovent. | neutral background versus emphasized ongoing duration |
Ara no puc parlar: condueixo.
I can't talk now: I'm driving.
Aquesta setmana estic treballant des de casa.
This week I'm working from home.
The first sentence shows that Catalan does not need estic conduint just because English uses a progressive. The second uses the periphrasis naturally to frame a temporary, bounded arrangement.
Lexical compatibility: events versus states
Progressives combine most naturally with dynamic predicates that have an observable course: treballar, llegir, ploure, canviar. Stable states such as saber, tenir, pertànyer, and many uses of conèixer normally take a simple tense.
Ja sé la resposta, però no sé com explicar-la.
I already know the answer, but I don't know how to explain it.
Forms such as estic sabent la resposta or estic tenint dos germans are not ordinary Catalan. A normally stative verb can enter a progressive if the context gives it a dynamic, temporary interpretation: Estàs sent molt injust focuses on current behavior, not permanent identity. This is a meaning shift, not a blanket exception.
Avui estàs sent molt pacient amb tothom.
You're being very patient with everyone today.
Anar + gerund: gradual development
Aspectual anar + gerund presents a process as advancing step by step. It is especially natural with gradual change, accumulation, disappearance, or an activity pursued bit by bit.
El cel es va enfosquint i aviat plourà.
The sky is gradually getting darker and it will rain soon.
Anem resolent els problemes a mesura que surten.
We're working through the problems as they come up.
Amb els anys, moltes expressions han anat desapareixent.
Over the years, many expressions have gradually disappeared.
This is different from literal movement plus an accompanying gerund: Hi anava caminant perquè no tenia cotxe means “He went there on foot because he had no car.” It is also different from the periphrastic past va parlar, where present-derived va plus an infinitive marks a completed past event.
| Form | Meaning |
|---|---|
| va parlar | she spoke — completed periphrastic past |
| va anar parlant | she kept/gradually went on speaking — past anar + gerund |
| anava parlant | she was talking as she went / kept talking — imperfect viewpoint |
Continuar and seguir + gerund: persistence
Both continuar + gerund and seguir + gerund say that a situation begun earlier still holds at the reference time. They are standard and broadly used. A simple imperfective verb with encara often conveys the same basic fact more neutrally.
La professora continua pensant que cal canviar l'horari.
The teacher still thinks the schedule needs to be changed.
Si segueixes fent tant soroll, despertaràs la criatura.
If you keep making so much noise, you'll wake the baby.
Encara treballa a l'institut, però ja busca una altra feina.
She still works at the secondary school, but she's already looking for another job.
The negative auxiliary scopes over continuation: No continua plovent means the rain is no longer continuing, not necessarily that it never rained. For “it is still not raining,” say Encara no plou.
Why aspectual venir + gerund is avoided
The sequence venir + gerund is perfectly normal when venir retains literal motion: La nena ve cantant pel passadís “The girl is coming down the corridor singing.” The girl both comes and sings.
La nena ve cantant pel passadís cada tarda.
The girl comes down the hallway singing every afternoon.
However, aspectual venir + gerund meaning “have been doing up to now” is not accepted in the contemporary formal standard. It often reflects Spanish venir + gerundio. Replace it with fa... que, des de..., continuar + gerund, or another construction that states duration directly.
Fa cinc anys que reivindiquen un conveni nou.
They have been calling for a new collective agreement for five years.
Literal-motion venir cantant is valid throughout the language, while the general formal standard avoids aspectual venen reivindicant.
Weak-pronoun placement
With these periphrases, a weak pronoun can normally climb before the finite auxiliary or attach to the gerund: l'estic llegint / estic llegint-lo; ho continua fent / continua fent-ho. In everyday Central Catalan, preverbal placement is often especially natural, but both patterns belong to the standard.
Aquest llibre, l'estic llegint per segona vegada.
This book, I'm reading it for the second time.
Ja li hem demanat que pari, però continua fent-ho.
We've already asked him to stop, but he keeps doing it.
With several pronouns, preserve the standard cluster: me n'estic adonant or estic adonant-me'n. The finite verb carries agreement; moving the clitics does not change the aspect.
Mini-dialogue
—Com va la mudança? —Anem fent; avui estem buidant el despatx.
—How's the move going? —We're getting there; today we're emptying the study.
—Encara plou? —Sí, continua plovent, però el cel es va aclarint.
—Is it still raining? —Yes, it keeps raining, but the sky is gradually clearing.
The dialogue uses anar fent for gradual progress, estar buidant for the current activity, continuar plovent for persistence, and es va aclarint for gradual change.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying every English progressive.
❌ Cada dissabte estem visitant els avis.
Unnatural for a regular habit — use the simple present.
✅ Cada dissabte visitem els avis.
Every Saturday we visit our grandparents.
2. Using a progressive with an ordinary stable state.
❌ Estic sabent què ha passat.
Incorrect in the intended stative meaning.
✅ Sé què ha passat.
I know what happened.
3. Copying aspectual venir + gerund.
❌ Venen reclamant una resposta des del gener.
Nonstandard aspectual calque in careful Catalan.
✅ Reclamen una resposta des del gener.
They have been asking for an answer since January.
4. Confusing anar + gerund with the periphrastic past.
❌ Diumenge vam passejant pel passeig marítim.
Incorrect — a completed periphrastic past requires an infinitive.
✅ Diumenge vam passejar pel passeig marítim.
On Sunday we walked along the seafront promenade.
5. Placing a weak pronoun between the auxiliary and gerund as a separate word.
❌ Estic llegint el ara.
Incorrect — the weak pronoun must be preverbal or attached to the gerund.
✅ L'estic llegint ara.
I'm reading it now.
Key Takeaways
Use estar + gerund to focus on an event in progress, anar + gerund for gradual development, and continuar/seguir + gerund for persistence. Prefer a simple tense for neutral current descriptions, habits, and stable states. Literal-motion venir cantant is valid; aspectual venir + gerund meaning “have been doing” is not part of the careful contemporary standard. Always read the finite auxiliary for time, person, and mood, and the gerund for viewpoint.
