English often forces a progressive wherever an action is happening now: “I'm cooking,” “she's waiting,” “we're leaving tomorrow.” Catalan does not. The simple present can describe a current action, and the imperfect can describe an action unfolding in the past. Estar + gerund is correct when the speaker deliberately foregrounds the process as underway, extended, interrupted, or limited to a particular phase.
The error is therefore not that Catalan lacks a progressive. It is using that marked viewpoint every time English contains be + -ing. Ask a more precise question: Does the sentence merely report what happens, or does it ask the listener to look inside the ongoing process? A neutral report normally takes a simple tense.
The diagnostic test
Apply these steps before choosing estar + gerund:
- If the verb expresses a state, identity, possession, knowledge, or preference, start with the simple present: sé, tinc, vull, m'agrada.
- If the sentence describes a habit, timetable, instruction, or future arrangement, use the simple present.
- If a past action supplies background or was in progress when something happened, the imperfect is often sufficient.
- Use estar + gerund when duration, interruption, gradual development, or the middle of the event is the point.
- If both forms are possible, compare meanings instead of declaring one universally wrong.
Common Mistakes
1. A neutral answer about the present
❌ —Què fas? —Estic preparant els entrepans.
Overmarked as a neutral answer — English encourages a progressive even when the context already supplies 'right now.'
✅ —Què fas? —Preparo els entrepans.
—What are you doing? —I'm making the sandwiches.
The question makes the current time obvious, so the simple present is the unmarked reply. Estic preparant... becomes useful if the process matters: No em truquis ara: estic preparant els entrepans per a quaranta persones.
2. A current wait with no process contrast
❌ Estem esperant l'autobús davant de la biblioteca.
Needlessly progressive in a simple location update.
✅ Esperem l'autobús davant de la biblioteca.
We're waiting for the bus in front of the library.
The simple present can report an action happening at this moment. The progressive is possible if the wait's duration is foregrounded: Fa una hora que estem esperant l'autobús.
3. A state of knowledge
❌ Estic sabent la resposta, però no sé com explicar-la.
Incorrect — saber is a state here, not an unfolding activity.
✅ Sé la resposta, però no sé com explicar-la.
I know the answer, but I don't know how to explain it.
Stative meanings normally resist the progressive. Do not manufacture estic sabent, estic tenint, or estic volent merely because English uses a present form of be elsewhere.
4. Possession
❌ Ara estic tenint dos minuts lliures.
Incorrect for ordinary possession or availability — tenir takes the simple present.
✅ Ara tinc dos minuts lliures.
I have two free minutes now.
Estar tenint can occur with eventive readings such as està tenint problemes in some contemporary usage, often under contact pressure, but it is not the neutral model for “have.”
5. A regular habit
❌ Cada dimarts estic dinant amb la meva àvia.
Incorrect for a neutral weekly habit — cada dimarts selects habitual present.
✅ Cada dimarts dino amb la meva àvia.
Every Tuesday I have lunch with my grandmother.
Repetition by itself does not create a progressive. Catalan uses the simple present for routines just as it does for schedules.
6. A future arrangement
❌ Demà estem sortint a les sis del matí.
English-driven for a calendar arrangement — the progressive is not the normal future marker.
✅ Demà sortim a les sis del matí.
Tomorrow we're leaving at six in the morning.
The future time word demà lets the simple present refer forward. Demà a les sis estarem sortint is possible, but it means that at six the departure will be in progress.
7. Instructions and demonstrations
❌ Primer estàs obrint el document i després estàs seleccionant la segona opció.
Incorrect as neutral instructions — English training-language progressives transfer badly here.
✅ Primer obres el document i després selecciones la segona opció.
First you open the document and then select the second option.
Instructions present a sequence of steps, not a set of actions already unfolding. The imperative—Obre... selecciona...—is another natural (informal) choice.
8. Past background
❌ Quan vas trucar, estava sopant cada vespre a casa dels avis.
Wrong viewpoint for a repeated past routine — the progressive turns it into one ongoing occasion.
✅ Aquell estiu sopava cada vespre a casa dels avis.
That summer I had dinner at my grandparents' house every evening.
The imperfect sopava expresses repeated background. Quan vas trucar, estava sopant a casa dels avis is grammatical for one meal in progress when the call arrived.
9. A neutral simultaneous past action
❌ Mentre jo estava revisant les factures, la Laia estava ordenant els arxius.
Heavy in a neutral narrative — both imperfects can establish simultaneous background without progressive periphrases.
✅ Mentre jo revisava les factures, la Laia ordenava els arxius.
While I was reviewing the invoices, Laia was organizing the files.
Use estava revisant when the interrupted process is central: Estava revisant la factura quan se'n va anar el llum. The dedicated imperfect and progressive comparison treats this contrast.
10. Narrating what a picture shows
❌ A la foto, dues nenes estan jugant a escacs i el seu pare està llegint el diari.
Overloaded in a plain description — the visible scene already establishes simultaneity.
✅ A la foto, dues nenes juguen a escacs i el seu pare llegeix el diari.
In the photo, two girls are playing chess and their father is reading the newspaper.
The simple present is normal for captions, demonstrations, live commentary, and descriptions of represented scenes. The English progressive does not need structural imitation.
Two “wrong” forms that become right with another meaning
The progressive is not banned. It changes the viewpoint.
Treballo a Girona, però aquest mes estic treballant a la delegació de Figueres.
I work in Girona, but this month I'm working at the Figueres branch.
Treballo a Girona states the ordinary employment situation. Estic treballant a Figueres frames a bounded phase currently underway. Replacing the second form with the simple present would remain possible, but would reduce the emphasis on the temporary lived phase.
En Pol sempre està perdent la targeta d'accés.
Pol is always losing his access card. (speaker's irritation)
With sempre, the progressive can present repeated behavior as persistently recurring, often with annoyance or admiration. Neutral En Pol sempre perd la targeta simply states the habit. Thus a sentence marked wrong in a routine exercise may be grammatical when the speaker's evaluation is part of the meaning.
English transfer versus Spanish contact
Spanish also has estar + gerundio, and contact can increase its frequency in some Catalan speakers. Yet no individual progressive should be condemned merely because Spanish has the same form: estar + gerund is native, productive Catalan grammar. Diagnose meaning and discourse function, not resemblance.
Across Central, Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese varieties, speakers differ in frequency and in preferred alternatives. Constructions with anar + gerund can express gradual development—La situació va millorant “the situation is gradually improving”—and should not be treated as a drop-in replacement for every English progressive. Formal prose often favors a simple tense where administrative English piles up progressives, but the process-focused construction remains standard.
A compact contrast table
| Context | Default repair | Progressive if... |
|---|---|---|
| action now | simple present | its course, duration, or interruption matters |
| habit or routine | simple present | persistent repetition carries evaluation |
| future arrangement | simple present + time phrase | you locate yourself inside the future event |
| past background | imperfect | the event is specifically caught in progress |
| state | simple tense | only if the verb has a genuine eventive reading |
Correction task
Repair only the unnecessary progressive: Demà estem agafant el tren de les vuit. Ara estic mirant si encara hi ha places perquè la web està funcionant molt lentament. A natural version is Demà agafem el tren de les vuit. Ara miro si encara hi ha places perquè la web funciona molt lentament. If the speaker wants to dramatize the frustrating process, la web està funcionant molt lentament can be retained with that marked meaning.
Final proofreading checklist
- Is the progressive present only because the English translation contains -ing?
- Is the verb stative: knowing, possessing, wanting, liking, or identifying?
- Does the sentence describe a habit, timetable, instruction, caption, or future arrangement?
- Would a simple present report the current action naturally enough?
- In the past, would the imperfect already express the necessary background?
- If you retain estar + gerund, can you identify the process meaning: duration, interruption, bounded phase, gradual development, or evaluative repetition?
- Are you labeling a real regional preference rather than calling every form shared with Spanish “incorrect”?
Key Takeaways
- The Catalan simple present can describe an action happening now; an English -ing form does not automatically require estar + gerund.
- Habits, instructions, timetables, captions, and future arrangements normally use the simple present.
- The imperfect often supplies enough past background without estar + gerund.
- Retain the progressive when duration, interruption, a bounded phase, or the internal course of the event is genuinely in focus.
- Shared forms with Spanish are not inherently contact errors: diagnose their Catalan meaning and discourse function.
Use the progressive when it earns its place. Otherwise, the Catalan simple present and imperfect do more work than their English names suggest.
