Cause, Reason, Purpose, and Result

Cause, purpose, and result all connect events, but they point in different logical directions. A cause explains why an event became true; a purpose names an intended future outcome; a result reports what actually followed. Catalan makes these relations visible through connector choice, clause position, and mood—even when English uses the same loose word so.

The essential contrast is between asserted explanation, projected intention, and actual consequence. Choosing a connector before deciding which relation you mean is the source of many advanced errors.

This map is semantic rather than a list of interchangeable synonyms. Com que and perquè may describe the same real-world cause while packaging it differently; perquè with a subjunctive does not describe a cause at all in its ordinary purposive use.

Perquè: new cause or projected purpose

Postposed causal perquè normally supplies discourse-new information and takes the indicative.

We have postponed the excursion because it snowed in the mountains last night.

Laia is not answering because she is doing a live interview.

The subordinate clause explains a fact already presented in the main clause. It is closely integrated and normally has no comma before it.

Purposive perquè names the outcome sought by an intentional action and takes the subjunctive:

Hem ajornat l'excursió perquè tothom hi pugui participar amb seguretat.

We have postponed the excursion so that everyone can take part safely.

I'm sending you the outline so that you can comment on it before the meeting.

In the first purpose clause, hi resumes the activity introduced by participar en. In the second, el resumes l'esquema. A purpose connector does not license dropping complements that the subordinate verb selects.

The mood contrast exposes the direction of dependence:

  • Ho repeteixo perquè no m'has sentit — your failure to hear is the prior cause of my repetition.
  • Ho repeteixo perquè em sentis bé — your hearing me is the intended purpose of my repetition.
💡
With perquè, ask whether the subordinate event already explains the main event or is merely the goal of it. Explanation is normally indicative; a projected goal is subjunctive.

Same and different subjects in purpose clauses

When one participant controls both actions, Catalan usually prefers per + infinitive or the more explicit (formal) per tal de + infinitive.

I came early to prepare the room without rushing.

The team anonymized the data in order to preserve the participants' privacy. (formal)

When the intended actor changes, use perquè/per tal que + subjunctive:

He vingut abans perquè els tècnics em mostrin la instal·lació.

I came early so that the technicians can show me the facility.

An infinitive with a different unexpressed subject creates a dangling purpose. Careful prose in both Catalan and English requires the infinitive's controller to be recoverable; when the intended actor changes, Catalan makes that subject and its agreement visible in a finite subjunctive clause.

Com que: a cause used as the frame

Initial com que presents a cause as accessible background from which the main conclusion follows. It is followed by a comma.

Since the road remains closed, we have postponed its reopening until Monday.

The initial clause is not the subject of hem ajornat. The understood subject is nosaltres, and n' resumes de la carretera inside la reobertura de la carretera. Catalan permits an unexpressed subject because verbal agreement identifies it; that freedom must not be confused with English word order.

Compare the neutral answer and the reordered frame:

Hem tancat l'accés nord perquè s'hi ha detectat una esquerda.

We have closed the north entrance because a crack was detected there. (reason supplied as new information)

Since a crack was detected there, we have closed the north entrance. (cause-first frame)

The passive-like pronominal construction s'hi ha detectat is appropriate when the detector is irrelevant. If responsibility matters, active syntax is clearer: Com que els inspectors hi han detectat una esquerda… Catalan does not need an agentless passive merely because formal English favors one.

Ja que can introduce a reason assumed or offered as sufficient, in initial or final position. (formal) Atès que is common in administrative and legal prose and presents a stated premise. Overuse outside those registers sounds bureaucratic.

Given that no application meets all the requirements, the position will be advertised again. (formal)

Denying one cause and replacing it with another

Negation can target the event or the proposed explanation. A rejected cause commonly takes the subjunctive and is corrected by sinó perquè + indicative:

No hem descartat l'opció perquè sigui cara, sinó perquè no resol el problema de fons.

We have not rejected the option because it is expensive, but because it does not solve the underlying problem.

The sentence grants no commitment to “it is expensive”; that alleged cause is rejected. The actual cause no resol… is asserted and therefore indicative. Without sinó or a supportive context, No ho hem fet perquè… can be scope-ambiguous: did we not do it, or did we do it for a different reason? Controlled writing states the contrast explicitly.

💡
A subjunctive after causal-looking perquè is not an ornamental marker of doubt. In a negated-cause construction it places the proposed explanation outside the speaker's asserted account.

Actual result versus intended arrangement

De manera que with the indicative normally introduces an actual consequence:

Una canonada es va trencar de matinada, de manera que l'edifici va quedar sense aigua.

A pipe burst during the night, so the building was left without water.

When de manera que describes how something should be arranged to obtain a future outcome, the subjunctive presents that outcome as intended:

Col·loqueu les pantalles de manera que no reflecteixin la llum de les finestres.

Position the screens so that they do not reflect the light from the windows.

The first is result; the second borders on manner and purpose. To eliminate that ambiguity in instructions, per tal que no reflecteixin… makes the purposive relation explicit.

Així que often introduces an immediate practical result in neutral or (informal) speech:

El proveïdor no podia garantir el termini, així que vam buscar una alternativa local.

The supplier could not guarantee the deadline, so we looked for a local alternative.

Per tant and inferential doncs connect independent discourse units rather than subordinating one clause. They draw a conclusion from prior information and are normally separated by punctuation.

The two samples show the same pattern; therefore, the analysis must be repeated with a different control. (academic)

Do not use doncs as a direct translation of causal Spanish pues or English because. Standard Catalan distinguishes a reason introduced by perquè from a consequence or inference introduced by doncs.

Degree and result: tan/tant… que

Result can be built into a degree expression: tan + adjective/adverb + que or tant/a/s/es + noun + que. The result clause states what crossing that degree caused.

The documentation was so scattered that it took us weeks to reconstruct the file.

There were so many versions of the budget that nobody knew which one was final.

The agreement in tantes versions belongs inside the quantified noun phrase. The following que introduces a result, not a comparative standard; compare comparison clauses.

Scope and ambiguous attachment

They reviewed the laboratory's system because it was malfunctioning.

The null subject of funcionava can recover el sistema or, less naturally but grammatically, el laboratori. Both are masculine singular. If the distinction matters, repeat or restructure the referent:

Com que el sistema funcionava malament, els tècnics el van revisar al laboratori.

Since the system was malfunctioning, the technicians checked it in the laboratory.

Fronting turns the cause into a wide-scope frame; the active main clause names the agents; el tracks the affected system. A comma alone cannot repair an uncertain referent.

A natural dialogue

—Why did you change the presentation? —Because the chart was hard to understand from the back.

—I ara què hi afegireu?

—And what will you add now? —An animated example so the audience can follow each stage; that way the conclusion will be clearer.

The first perquè answers with an asserted cause, hence indicative s'entenia. The second introduces a desired outcome, hence subjunctive pugui. Final així points forward to the predicted result without pretending that it has already occurred.

Regional and register guidance

These connector contrasts belong to the common Catalan standard. (regional: Valencian) Forms such as puga and reflectisquen correspond to Central pugui and reflecteixin without changing the purposive reading. (formal, IEC/AVL) Atès que, per tal de, per tal que, and per tant are established across the standards. (archaic/literary) Puix que can introduce a cause in older or deliberately elevated texts; it is not a neutral modern substitute for com que.

Common Mistakes

Incorrect—the finite purposive connector is perquè or per tal que.

✅ Ho detallarem perquè no hi hagi cap dubte.

We will explain it in detail so that there is no doubt.

2. Using the indicative for a projected purpose.

Incorrect for the intended purpose—the families' attendance is a desired outcome.

They have extended the opening hours so that more families can come.

3. Using doncs to introduce a cause.

❌ No hem sortit doncs plovia molt.

Incorrect in standard Catalan—doncs introduces a consequence or inference, not this direct cause.

✅ No hem sortit perquè plovia molt.

We did not go out because it was raining heavily.

4. Leaving different subjects inside an uncontrolled infinitive.

Incorrect—the intended subordinate actor differs, so a finite purpose clause is needed.

Management sent a reminder so that the members would submit the documents.

5. Attaching a causal modifier to an unclear noun.

Ambiguous in controlled prose—sensor and motor are both possible subjects of fallava.

Since the sensor often failed, they replaced it with a more robust model.

Correction task

The sentence Com que volem que el públic ho entén, hi posarem un esquema mixes a volitional complement with the indicative. Correct both the embedded mood and the causal frame:

Com que volem que el públic ho entengui, hi posarem un esquema.

Since we want the audience to understand it, we will include a diagram.

Com que introduces the asserted reason volem; inside that reason, volem que… projects another participant's desired action and selects subjunctive entengui. Mood is assigned clause by clause, not once for the whole sentence.

Key Takeaways

  • Causal perquè usually takes the indicative; purposive perquè takes the subjunctive.
  • Use an infinitive for a controlled same-subject purpose and a finite clause when the actor changes.
  • Com que frames an accessible cause; postposed perquè normally supplies a new reason.
  • Indicative de manera que reports a result; subjunctive can mark an intended arrangement.
  • Per tant and doncs express consequence or inference, not a direct causal subordinate.
  • Make scope, agents, referents, and required clitics explicit when several clauses compete for attachment.
